J. B. MARTIN.
FARM GATE. No. 341,590. Patented May 11, 1886.
WJTJVE SE8 .Hllorney UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES BLANCHARD MARTIN, OF OARROLLTON, GEORGIA.
FARM- GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,590, dated May 11, 1886.
Application filed March 3, 1886.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, J AMES BLANOHARD lVIAR- TIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oarrollton, inthe county of Carroll and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Farm-Gates; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to improvements in farm-gates; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of devices hereinafter fully explained, and particularl pointed out in the appended claim.
The annexed drawing, which fully illustrates my invention, is a perspective view of my improved farm-gate.
In said drawing, A designates the gate, which is composed of the longitudinal bars a, front vertical bar, a, rear pivoted post or bar, I), and a pivoted latch-bar, b. The rear post, Z), is provided at its top and bottom with projecting pins or journals 0 c, the lower one of which has its pivotal bearing in a block. d, and the upper is pivoted to one end of a bar, 01', which latter is in turn horizontally pivoted at e to the gate-post B. This post is provided on top with two stop-pins, e 6, between which the pivoted arm aforesaid has a horizontal movement, limited on either side of the post by their engaging the side of the arm when the latter is thrown in either direction.
The operating mechanism consists of the oblique barsff, connected to one another by the horizontal barsf and f, the former of which plays between the post and the rear gate-bar. The latter lies in the rear of both; and is provided with stop-pins k, and the inner ends of the oblique bars are secured to a block, 9, which is pivoted to the rear of the gate-post 13, near its lower end, as shown at g. The oblique bars are further provided with wires or chains h, which are secured to the pivoted arm d at h, and the extreme ends iof the bars f f are also provided with handles Serial No. 193,855. (No model.)
2" i, which are grasped by a-person in a vehicle or on horseback, in opening and closing the gate from either side thereof.
It will be observed from the above description that when it is desired to open the gate without alighting from a vehicle or horseback, the person simply grasps the handle and gives it a downward pull, which causes the block to move on its pivot, and the wire or chain to draw the rear end of the pivoted arm (I toward the operator, thus throwing the opposite end of the pivoted bar from said operator, thereby inclining the rear gate-bar, b. At the same time the latch-lever is raised from engagement with the beveled notched keeper 9' on the latch-post D, the gate is swung open in the direction from the operator, and the latch engages the keeper on the short post E, which is in line with the post carrying the pivotal arm aforesaid,'and holds the gate open. After passing through the gateway, the other handle is drawn downward, thus releasing the latch, by carrying the gate bar or post to an inclined position opposite to that above described, when the gate swings to, and the latch again engages the keeper on the latch-post and holds it firmly closed.
This gate can be easily and quickly opened and closed by foot-passengers by simply rais ing the latch-lever from the keeper and push ing or drawing the gate to one side.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- The combination, with the farm gate herein described, consisting of the gate proper, provided with a latch-bar and projecting upper and lower pintles, c c, of the bar at, pivoted on the gate-post between stop-pins e e, and of oblique armsff, pivoted at the rear of said post and connected to bard by wires h,'said arms being united by armsff f arranged in front of the gate-post, and f, provided with stop-pins is, passing in rear thereof, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' J AMES BLANOHARD MARTIN.
