Description

Feb. 2, 1932. J. B. SPARKS DOOR STOP AND LOCK Filed June 15, 1929 foe ,5. Spar Rs" 4a member thereon.
Patented Feb. 2, 1932 JOE B. SPARKS, 0F VALLEJO, CALIFORNIA DOOR STOP Application filed June 15,
This invention relates to improvements in door stop and locks of the class where a limit stop acts to lock in the open position, and means to release the lock.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple locking mechanism for holding a hinged door securely in the open position at any predetermined angle.
, Another object is to provide a locking means that is readily unlocked.
Another object is to provide a locking means in which the strain is released from the catch when the door is locked in the open position.
Other objects of the invention will be apparent as the description proceeds.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which the same reference numeral is applied to the same portion throughoutthe several figures of the drawings, and of which there may be modifications.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a door and doorway, the door being in the open locked posi tion showing the locking mechanism,
Figure 2 is an edge view of the locking mechanism somewhat enlarged,
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail of the latch and release,
Figure 4 shows a plan of a modified form of locking device, and
Figure 5 is an edge view of the device shown in Figure 4 showing the upper portion of the door.
The numerals 1 and 2 indicate two bars hinged at 3. The bar 1 is pivoted to the up per part of the doorway at 4, and the bar 2 is pivoted to the bracket 5 at 5, which is fixed to the door 6 by screws, or other suitable means. The bars are bent down at 1 and 2.
7 indicates the hinge of the door, and 8 the front of the building to which the door is hinged. The bar 2 has the portion 9 extending past the pivot and has the upturned stop This member fits into a notch in the bar 1 to prevent further movement past the center line when the bars are in the locked position.
The means for throwing the bars out of the locking position, consists of an extension 11 AND LOCK 1929. Serial No. 371,093.
of the bracket 5 on which is mounted the brackets 12 and 13 in which is pivoted the catch 14 011 the pin 15. This catch has the notch 16 for holding the bar 2 when the bars are in the locking position.
A rod 17 pivoted to the catch at 18 and passing through a bracket 19, is used to re lease the catch by means of a pull rod 20 which is connected to the eye 21 of the rod 17. A spring 22 acts to hold the catch up. The rod 20 extends down to within reach of the operator, and preferably has the handle 23 for convenience.
The catch 14 has the shoulder 24 extending above the pivot, and the limit stop 25.
In the modified forms shown in Figures 4 and 5 the construction is practically the same as the above described form except that no catch is used.
A rod 26 is fixed to the bar 27 so that the turning of the rod will swing the bar which is pivoted in the bracket 28 and the bracket is fastened to the door 29. The rod has the bearing 30 fastened to the door near the handle 31 on the rod.
The bar 32 is pivoted to the upper part of the doorway at 33, and to the bar 27 at 34. The extension 35 on the bar 27 has the limit stop 36.
The pivoted bars are bent down at 37 and 38 to allow more room for the bracket 28, but these levers may be straight by modifying the form of the bracket. A spring 39 may be used to hold the bars in the locking position, but it will operate without the spring.
In the operation of the form shown in Figures 1 and 2 the act of opening the door pulls the bars into a straight line, and the catch 14 holds the bars in that position until the latch is pulled down by the rods 17 and 20., This action brings forward the shoulder 24 which forces out the bar 2 and breaks the locking joint when the door can be closed.
In the form of the invention shown in Figures 4 and 5 the door is opened and the bars straighten out. By turning the rod 26 by means of the handle 31, the final movement can be helped to straighten out the bars into the locking position, by turning the rod the other way the lock is released.
It will be seen from the above description taken with the drawings that a very simple and efficient means is evolved to hold a door open.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows, but modifications may be made in carrying out the invention as shown in the drawingsand in the i above particularly described form thereof,
, within the purview of the annexed claims;
1. A door stop and lock comprising a bar 1 pivoted on a doorway, a second bar hinged to the first bar and pivoted on the door hinged in said doorway, a lug on the second bar to engage the first bar when the door is opened-to its fullest extent, a latch pivoted 201 on said door to engage the second barwhen the door is opened to its fullest extent, a depending releasing rod connected to said latch, a starting lug fixed to said latch and adapted to press on said second bar when said releasing rod is operated.
2. A door stop and lock comprising a bar pivoted on a doorway, a second bar hinged to, the'first bar and pivoted onthe door hinged in said doorway, a lug on the second bar to engage the first bar when the bars are in a straight line position, a latch pivoted on said door to engage the second bar when the bars are in a straight line position, a depending releasing rod connected to saidrlatch,
and a startinglug projecting upwardly from said latch and adapted to press on said, sec-. ondbarvwhen said releasing rod is operated.
3. A door stop and lock comprising a bar pivoted on a doorway, a second bar hinged ,to the first bar and pivoted on the door hinged in said doorway, a lug on the second barto engage the first-bar when the bars are in a, straight line position, a latch piv oted on said door to engage'the second bar when the bars are in a straight line position,
" a depending releasing rod connected to said latch, and a starting lug projecting upwardly from said latch and adapted to move said second bar clear of said latch when said releasing rod is operated.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of April, A. D. 1929.
