To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN WILSE LYON, a citizen of the United States residing at Flatgap, in the county of Johnson and State of Kentucky, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Farm Gates, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide certain new improvements in that type of gates adapted to be opened by hand-operated mechanism as the gate is approached .from opposite directions.
The invention resides particularly in certain features of construction which will be described more fully hereinafter, and for a full understanding of such features, reference is to be had to the following detail description and to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view showing a gate embodying the invention in open position, dotted lines showing the closed position of the gate and adjacent parts of the operatin 'mechanism; Fig. 2 is a front elevation o the gate, certain parts being shown in section; Fig. 3 is an end view bringing out more clearly the arrangement of the hand levers and connection thereof with the gate; Fig. 4: is a section taken on the line t4c of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line 55 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 6 is a detail view showing more clearly the operating device by which thecatch spring on the gate is operated. j
Throughout the following detail description and on the several figures of the drawings similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.
Referring to the drawings it will be observed that the usual supportin'g post 1 is provided and with it the gate is hingedly or pivotally connected as shown at 2. The gate is of the horizontally swinging type and is locked in closed position by a fixed catch 3 on a post 41, said catch 3 cooperating with a catch spring 5 on the free end of the gate 6. The gate 6 may be of any conventional type so long as it is associated with the various parts to be now described and which form the essential features of the invention.
Mounted on the supporting post 1 at its rear or outer side is a vertical shaft 7 having at its upper end an outwardly projecting arm 8 which is bifurcated or not as may be vers 10 located on opposite sides of the gate and preferably at a side of the road, should the gate be located in a road or similar place. The shaft 7 is peculiarly connected for operation of the gate by means of actuating arms 11, said arms being curved in opposite directions and extending toward the hinged end of said gate 6. At their outer ends the arms are provided with loops 11 which receive pivoted stop arms 12, the arms 12 each having pivotal connection at one end with the upper portion of the gate and being provided with a stop 12 intermediate of its ends. The loop 11 of the adjacent actuating arm 11 is adapted to engage the stop 12 of the stop arm 12 and in order to shove the gate open by positive action. On the shaft 7 are carried oppositely extending pro: jections 13 each of which coacts with a curved extension 14 on the outer end of a latch rod 15, the curved extensions 14 being formed by bifurcating the rod 15 at its outer end. Hooks 16 are provided at the outer ends of the extensions 14 and the projections 13 are .movable lengthwise of and in the hooks 16. The latch rod 15 is normally held retracted by means of a coiled spring 17 surrounding the same and mounted in a horizontal opening in the supporting post 1 which carries said latch rod. A short pull rod 18 connects the latch rod 15 with the wire or other connection, shown at 19, said connection 19 being directly connected by means of a series of levers shown at 20 with the catch spring 5 by which the gate is held closed. A coiled spring 21 is interposed between the hinged end of the gate 6 and the post 1 and normally tends to hold the gate in a closed position as shown in Fig. 2.
lVhen the gate is closed the loops on the actuating arms 11 are located a short distance from the stops 12 so that the hand levers 10 must be moved a short distance before the loops 11 strike the stops 12' and force the gate open. Assuming that it is desired to pass through a gateway the hand lever 10 approached by the operator, and which is supported on a post 10, is pulled downwardly causing the loop of one of the arms 11 to move toward the stop 12 adjacent thereto. Previous to the loop 11 striking the stop 12 the shaft 7 will have been turned sufliciently to cause one of the projections 13 to pull outwardly on the latch rod 15 and desired. The arm 8 is connected by wires 9 disengage the spring catch 5 from the catch or similar flexible connections with hand le- 3 on the post 4. The gate Wlll then be free to swing open when the loop 11 strikes the stop 12 under the actuation of the lever 10 above referred to. By reason of the arcuate movement of the loop 11 it is necessary that the arm 12 with which it cooperates be pivotally connected with the gate as before described. When the gate is swung to its full open position, a fixed catch 22 on the hinged post of the gate will engage with one of a pair of pivoted catches 23 which are mounted on the supporting post 1. The catches 23 are so arranged that an 'end of the fixed catch 22 will engage with one of the catches 23 when the gate is opened, and according in which direction the gate swings. Each of the catches 23 is provided with a lateral arm 23 with which a cam '24 on the shaft 7 is adapted to engage. Springs 25 normally tend to force the catches 23 outwardly so as to disengage them from the catch 22.
The action of the parts just described is extremely advantageous because when the gate swings open the catch 22 will engage one of the catches 23, said catches being permitted to move inwardly by reason of the fact that the cam 24 is turned with the shaft into a transverse position. However, the passerby having passed through the gate, downward movement of the now adjacent lever 10 will turn the shaft 7 causing the cam 24: to engage the adjacent arms 23 of the catches 23 so that the one of the latter cooperating with the catch 22 on the gate will be disengaged therefrom and permit the gate to "close under the actuation of one of the arms.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In combination, a horizontally swinging gate, a supporting post, a shaft on said post, means for operating said shaft, stop arms pivotally connected with the gate, and
actuating arms carried by the shaft and movable thereby to coact with the stop arms to open and close the gate.
2. In combination a supporting post, a gate mounted to swing thereon, a pair of stop arms extending from opposite sides of the gate and having stops in their length, a shaft mounted on the supporting post, actuating arms projecting from said shaft and arranged to engage the stops on the stop arms, and means for turning the shaft to cause cooperation of the actuating arms with the stops to close and open the gate.
3. In combination, a horizontally swinging gate, a supporting post, a shaft on said post, means for operating said shaft, stop arms pivotally connected with the gate, actuating arms carried by the shaft and movable thereby to coact with the stop arms to open and close the gate, a catch for holding the gate closed, a latch rod mounted on the supporting post and connected with said catch, and means on the shaft for pulling the latch rod previous to opening 'ofthe gate by cooperation of the actuating arms with the stop arms.
4. In combination, a supporting post, a gate mounted to swin thereon, a fixed double ended catch applied to the swinging end of the gate, a shaft mounted on the supporting post, means connecting said shaft with the gate for opening and closing the latter, a pair of catches pivoted to the sup porting post and one of which is adapted to engage the fixed catch on the gate when the latter is opened in either direction, the catches on the supporting post having lateral arms adjacent to one another, and a cam mounted on the shaft and arranged to engage the arms of said catches to release the gate therefrom initial to closing movement.
