J. COOKS.
LOOK AND LATCH. No. 390,205. ed Oct. 2, 1888.
h Mis 5:5 1 1 hmi/mwe C3 NITED STATES JACK COOKS, OF LARIMORE, DAKOTA TERRITORY.
.LOCK AND LATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 390.205, dated October 2, 1888.
Application filed March 5, 1888. Serial No. 266,172.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACK Coons, a citizen of the United States, residing at Larimore, in the county of Grand Forks and Territory of Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks and Latches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap' pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specifiea tion.
This invention relates to locking devices for doors, and has for its object the provision of two or more latch-bolts that are disposed at suitable distances apart along the edge of the door to lock the same, and which are simultaneously operated by a knob.
The improvement consists of the novel construction and combination of the parts, which will hereinafter be more fully described and claimed, and shown in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view, parts being broken away, of a door provided with my improvement; Fig. 2, afront view ofthe latch; and Fig. 3, a front View of the latch-operating device and the lock.
The lockbolt is, having the lateral extension j at its rear end, the spring I for projecting the bolt, and the elbow-lever IL, pivoted at i, and having its elbow resting against the extension j, are suitably mounted in a case or secured to a plate, A, which is designed to be mortised in the door. There may be as many of these looks as desired applied to a door, two being shown, C and 0, one lock, 0, being near the top of the door, and the other, 0, being near the bottom of the door. The latch D is likewise mortised in the door, and in addition to the ordinarylatch-bolt,f, is provided with the latch operating levers E, which extend substantially parallel with each other and are pivoted at (Z midway of their ends. These levers E are arranged in horizontal planes and above and below the latch'bolt f. The outer ends of the latch-operating levers E are connected with the outer ends of the levers h of the lock-bolts by chain or wire g, which are let in a groove in the edge of the door, and the inner ends are adapted to be spread or separated by the cam on, mounted on the knob-shaft a. The lifters (No model.)
I), pivoted at their inner ends and having their free ends interposed between the cam m and the ends of the levers E, increase the moving action of the said cam m on the levers E, as will be readily understood. The lock-bars O, pivoted at their inner ends to the latch-boltf, pass between guide-pins p and p, and have their outer ends adapted to bear against the inner edges of the levers E and lock them against inward motion when the said latchbolt is projected, as shown by full lines in Fig. 'When the latch-bolt f is withdrawn, the lock-bars O are drawn out of engagement with the levers E, which are free to be operated. by turning the knob-shaft a to retract the lock bolts 7c through the chains or cords g. The springs Z project the lock-bolts and hold the inner ends of the levers in a position to be actuated when the knob-shaft is turned.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and'desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In a door'lock, the combination, with the two lock-bolts, the two levers E, pivoted midway of their ends, and the connections 9, connecting the outer ends of the lever E with the said lock-bolts, of the two lifters pivoted at one end and arranged approximately parallel with the levers E, the cam m, arranged between the lifters b, and the shaft a, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with the lever E and the cam m, of the lifter b, pivoted at. one end and having its free end interposed between the lever E and the cam at, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the lever E and the eamm, of the latch-boltf and the lock-bars O, substantially as specified.
4. The combination, with the lever E, the cam m, and the latch-bolt, of the lock-bar and the two guide-pins, substantially as and for the purpose described.
5. The combination, with the door, the lockbolts k, the latch-operating levers, the cords g, and the cam in, of the latch-bolt fand the lock-bars O, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
JACK COCKS.
