DOOR LATCH.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 8. 1920.
1,405,977, Patented Feb. 7, 1922.
ATTORNEY. I I
UNITED STATES WALTER E. BILL, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
DOOR LATCH.
Application filed April 8,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVALTER E. DILL, .a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Latches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to locks and more particularly to double doorlocks.
The object of the invention is to provide simple and efiicient means for automatically locking the first door of a garage or other building and which is operable to lock the door on the pushing to thereof.
Another object is to provide a door lock which looks automatically on the closing of the door but is manually releasable by the actuation of a lever from inside.
lVit-h the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents an elevation taken from the inside of the door with this improved lock shown applied, and
Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical section thereof.
In the embodiment illustrated, a pair of double hinged doors 1 and 2 are shown equipped with the usual spring lock 3 one member of which is carried by door 1 and the other member 4 by door 2 and which is designed for locking the two doors together being releasable by a key as is usual in looks of this character.
The lock constituting this invention comprises two latched members 5 and 5 hinged at 7 to the inner face of door 2 adjacent its upper and lower edges each having a hooked shaped outer end 5 which is designed to interlockingly engage a. recess 12 in a plate 13 which constitutes the catch member.
Two L-shaped brackets are secured to the inner face of door 2 adjacent its free edgeat the top and bottom thereof, the long arm. 6 of which is secured to th door by Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. *7, 1922.
1920. Serial No. 372,208.
suitable means and to one end of which is hingedthe latch members 5 and 5 shown at 7. The shorter arms of these members or brackets project laterally inward at right angles to the brackets and are numbered 8. Arranged between the arms 8 and the latch members are coiled springs 11 through which extend rods 9. These rods are connected at one end with eye bolts 10 carried by the lat-ch members 5 and 5 and extend through apertures in the arms 8 their ends being connected by means presently to be described.
Secured to the inner face of door 2 is an inverted U-shaped keeper 14; having laterally extending seat 15 to form attaching elements for the keeper. Fulcrumed on the .cross bar 16 of this keeper is a lever 20 the fulcrum being shown at 17 This lever 20 has an offset portion 21, which extends under a keeper 22 which forms a guide for the lever and limits its movement in opposite directions. The handle 23 of the lever is offset from the portion 21 a sufficient distance to afford a suitable grip without the fingers of the operator coming in contact with the door.
The ends of the rods 9 extend through upstanding members 18 and 19 of L-shaped brackets secured to the lever 20 on opposite sides of its fulcrum. These brackets are loosely mounted on the lever to provide for the actuation thereof without danger of bonding the rods. The inner ends of the rods 9 are preferably equipped with swivel heads 26 and are provided with jam nuts 27 and 28 on their free ends.
In the use of this lock, it will be obvious that when the handle 23 of lever 20 is moved upwardly the rods 9 will be moved toward each other thereby raising the latch members 5 and 5 and compressing springs 11 between said members and the arms 8. This operation. releases the latches and permits the door to be opened and immediately the lever is released the sprin s 11 will return the parts to normal position.
When the door 2 is closed being swung to by a push or otherwise, the beveled noses 5 of the latches 5 and 5 will ride over wear plates 13 which are secured to thev upper and lower sills of the door frame and when they reach the recesses 12 the hooked noses 5 thereof will automatically snap into engagement therewith and lock the door in closed position. After this door has been so locked, door 1 is closed and locked to door 2 by the spring lock above referred to.
While two of the latch members are shown for securing the door at its top and bottom, obviously one only may be employed if found desirable to do so. I
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to whichthe invention appertains and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are Within the scope of the claimed invention.
