Description

R. J. BARTON. GATE LATCH. `APPLICATION FILED DEC. l1, 1912.'
rammed Feb.29,1916.
' guna/Lto@ fJdffon hereby free end of the gate,
- are connected by a series of horizontally and .bar 26 of the frame 2 RAYMOND JVBARTON, 0F ROSCOE, IOWA.
GATE-LATCH.
niaaiais.
To all whom it may concern: y
Be it known that I, RAYMOND J. BARTON, a. citizen of the United States, residingV at Rscoe` in the county of Des Moines, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate- Latches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willfenable others skilled in the 'art to which it appertains to make and use the same. Y
The present invention is directed to improvements in gate latches, and hasl for its object to construct a device of this character which is exceedingly simple in construction, and one which will efectiially lock a slidin gate in its closed position.
In t e drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of 'the gate equipped with the latch. Fig. 2 is a detail fragmentary View of the the latch post being shown in section. F ig. 3 is a detail view .of the latch in its unlocked position.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 24 designates the gate which consists of a frame formed from metallic bars. The end bars 26 vertically disposed rods 27 forming Va meshpost 29 is mounted adjacent the forward end ofthe gate. A handle or hand grip 33 is secured near the end fit the free end of the gate, being providedwith a plate portion 34 whichv is attached and preferably welded to the rods 27 adjacent to the bar :26 and above the vertical center of the gate.
In order to hold the gate in position to close the entrance or passageway over which 29 which isof rectanguit operates, the post provided with ain anchoring plate'f35, carries a bolt. extends through the post and which is en- Copie of this patent may be I Specification of Letters Patent. l
having 'a recess formed therein,
portion which is pivotally A gate, said portion terminating in 36 which gaged by a fastener 37 carried the adja- -cent bar 26 of the gate frame; This fastener comprises a section rof metal bent to form a vertical gripping portion 38 and a horizontal portion 39 pivoted to the lbar 26 and then bent upwardly and horizontally as shown at 40, the extremity being bent downwardly and turned to form a loop41. The fastener being thus mounted on a pivot indicated by the numeral l2 is held in position so that the loop 4l normally engages the bolt 36, being held in this position by means of a stoutcoiled spring 43 connecting the gripping portion 38 and the bar 26a It is necessary to exert pull upon then gripping portion 38 in order to disengage the fastener and the post l29 is provided with open spaces 44. above and below the bolt to permit engagement and disengagement of the loop with relation to the bolt.
I claim: l
Ina gate latch, the combination with a post and' slidably mounted gate, said post a bolt extending transversely of the recess, a latch bar having a vertical 4gripping portion, the lower end of which terminates in a horizontal connected to the an inverted Urshaped frame, the outer end of which has its lower end formed with a loop adapted to engage under said bolt when the -frame is engaged in the recem, and a spring arranged between the gate and4 vertical gripping portion to hold the loop in yielding engagement with said'boih .'In testimony whereof, I aiiix my signature,
obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commieecaer of Entente, Washngtong. C.
