(Cl.- 189-69) The invention relates to windows and has for one of its objectsto provide animprovedconstructionof window having lock controlled means providing for and limiting the opening movement of the sash, whereby the Vwindow maybe used as a detention window, if desired. Another object is to so construct thelwindow that the means for limiting the opening movement of the sash may be made inoperative,l so that the sash may be more fully opened, ifk desired, to enable cleaning ortho like oil the window. A furtherobject is to so construct the window and the means for limiting the opening movement of the sash that the parts may bereadi-iy and economically assembled.
These and other objects: of the invention will become apparent from. the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure lisa perspective view of a portion` of a Window showing anembodimentof my` invention;

While the invention is equally applicableto various types of` Windows,` such as those having open Ain sashes or ventilators, orthose having sashes or ventilators which are adapted tothe projected out. or projected in, as well as still other types, the inventionas'shown; in- Figures 1 to 4. inclusive. is ap.- plied-to a=window of vthe projected out type.v -This window comprises the metallic frame Iandthe metallic sash- 2 between. the jambA bars of which extend the supporting arms 3 having their opposite ends pivotally connected to the jamb bars. The upper portion of the sash 2 is pivotally and slidably connected to the frame as by means of the shoes Ill pivotallymounted upon the sash and slidably engaging the jamb bars of the frame. With the exception that the supporting barsy 3 are shorter and, pivotal-ly connected to the jamb bars of the frame at a greater height, the above described construction of window is the same as the ordinary construction of this. type.
5 is an arm having its upper end pivotally and slidably connected to a jamb bar of the sash 2. In detail, the upper end of this arm has secured thereto the shouldered rivet 6 which slides in the slot 'l formed in and extending longitudinally of the metallic guide 8, which latter extends longitudinallyof the jamb bar of the sash and is xedly and permanently secured to `its web by suitable means, such as the rivets 9. III is a bracket-xedly and permanently secured to the web. of the adjacent jamb bar of the frame I as by the rivets II. The portion of this bracket through which the rivets pass is spaced laterally lfrom the jamb bar of the frame by theblock I2, lwhich extends longitudinally of the jamb bar. 'Ihe bracket has the lower end portion I3 which is laterally olset from the block I2 and.v is adapted to extend adjacent to the lower end of the arm 5. This offset portion has the transverse hole I4 which is of a size to t the cylindrical portion vI6 of the shouldered rivet Il, the latter extending transversely of and being secured to the lower end of the arm 5. The rivet I1 has. the head I8 at its free end whichis Vadapted toextend into the opening I9 in the lower end fofkthe block It.I
With the construction as above described, lit willbe seen that when the army 5 is operatively connected to the frame I through the shouldered rivet I1 and the bracket I0 the sash 2 may open `to an extent controlled by the arm 5. This arm is of suchfa length that the size of the opening is less than that required for the passage therethrough of a human being. On the other hand, if it is desired to more fully open the sash for the purpose of cleaning the same or for any other reason the arm 5 can be disconnected from the frame and made inoperative by moving the lower end of the arm laterally a sunicient distance to disengage the rivet I l from the bracket IU, there being suflicient play to provide for this disengagement.y The arm 5 is preferably made of substantially tool-proof material, such as spring steel., so that when this arm is locked it is very diicult for any one to cut his way out by the use of a hack-saw or other tool.
20A is a latch having the body portion 2I longitudinally slidable of the jamb bar between the oiset portion I3 of the bracket and the block I2. This latch has at the lower endof its body portion theI transverse ange 22 and has in its body portionthe key-hole shaped Vopening 23 having an enlarged portion at its upper end of a size to permit the passage of the head I8 of the rivetY therethrough and also having a rethis rivet from the bracket duced portion at its lower end of a size to clear the neck of the rivet I1 between its enlarged portion I6 and its head I8. The size of this reduced portion of the opening, however, is such that when the neck of the rivet extends through this reduced portion the head cannot be disengaged from the latch. For controlling this latch, I have provided the lock 24 having the housing 25 xedly and permanently secured to the frame I at the lower end of its jamb bar. The lower end portion of the latch extends into and is guided by the housing. trolling mechanism comprising the cylinder 26 and the cam 21. The cylinder has its stationary part xedly and permanently secured within the housing as by being welded thereto at 28 and its movable part, which is located within the stationary part and connected at one end to the cam 21, extending inwardly through the inside iiange of the lower or sill bar or the horizontal meeting rail of the frame immediately below the opening, whereby this movable part may receive a key. The camv21 is adapted tobe rotated from the position shown in full lines in Figure 3 to the position shown in dotted lines in the same gure and this cam is engageable with the transverse flange 22 of the latch, so that when the cam is in the position shown in full lines the latch is in its uppermost position and positively secures the arm 5 to the frame I and when the cam is in the position shown in dotted lines the latch is in its lowermost position, at which time the enlarged portion of the opening 23 of this latch registers with the head I8 of the rivet I1 and provides for disengagement of It will be seen that all of the parts which provide for and limit the opening movement of the sash are located in the space iormedbetween the bars of the frame and the sash when the sash is in closed position, with the exception that the portion of the cylinder into which the key may be inserted is exposed.
In the modication shown in Figures 5 and 6, the invention is shown as applied to a window having a sash movable horizontally to open position. This window may be of the side-hinged or side-projected type and, as shown, is a Casement window. In detail, the window has the frame. 29 and the outwardly opening sash 30 hinged upon the frame. The mechanism for limiting the outward swinging movement of the sash is the same as that previously described in connection with Figures l to 4, inclusive, with the exception that the arm3l is pivotally and slidably connected to the bottom or sill bar of the sash 30 and is adapted to be pivotally connected to the bracket 32, which latter is permanently flxedly secured t0 the bottom or sill bar or the horizontal meeting rail of the frame 29 immediately below the sash when closed. The locking'device for controlling the securing of the arm to the bracket is also mounted upon the same bar or rail and all of this mechanism is located within the space formed by the frame and sash bars when the sash is closed, with the exception that the portion of the locking device which is adapted to be engaged by the key extends inwardly through the inside flange of this bar or rail.
Figures l and 8 disclose another modification in which the latch 33 is adapted to be secured in its adjusted positions by the locking meber 34, which is a special screw having the enlarged head 35 at its upper end, the cylindrical portion 36 extending through an elongated slot in the The lock also has cony latch and the threaded portion 31 threaded into the web of the lower or sill bar or horizontal meeting rail immediately below the window opening. The head 35 may be provided with a special wrench engaging socket, such as the polygonal recess 38, so that this locking device can only be operated by means of a special wrench. For assisting in locking the latch, I have provided the normally bowed spring washer 39 which is located between the latch and the web of the bar orrail.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a window construction, the combination with a frame and a sash on said frame normally movable to a predetermined open position, of a bracket upon one of said members and an arm operatively connected to the other of said members and adapted to be operatively connected to said bracket providing for and limiting the opening movement of said sash to an open position between said predetermined open position and the closed position, a latch movable to a position to secure said arm to said bracket and also movable to av position to provide for disconnecting said arm from said bracket, andlockin'g means for controlling said latch.
2. In a window construction, the combination with a frame and a sash on said frame normally movable to a predetermined open position, of' a member upon one of said frame and sash members and an arm operatively connected to the other of said frame and sash members and adapted to be operatively connected tofsaid rst mentioned member position between said predetermined open position and the closed position, a latch for detachably securing said arm to' said lrstvmentio'ned member, and spring means engageable with said latch for frictionallyresisting movement'thereof.
3. In a window construction, the combination with a frame member and a swinging sash member, of means for limiting movement of the sash member to open position including an arm having one end slidably and pivotally connected to one of said members, means for slidably andpivotally connecting the other end of saidarm to the other of said members, saidplast named means fashioned to provide for detaching the associated end if the arm from the latter mem# ber upon sliding movement of said end to a predetermined position relative tothe 'membena'nd a key-operated lock preventing unauthorized -removal of the arm from said last named member. f 4. In a windowconstruction, the combination with a frame and a swinging vsash on said'irame, of means for limiting movement'oi the sash to open position including an arm having one'e'nd pivotally and slidably connected to thev sash, means pivotally and slidably connecting the other end of the arm to the frame-fashionedto provide for vdetaching the arm from the frame upon sliding movement of the last named 'end thereof to a predetermined position relative to the frame, and a lock carried by the frame preventing unauthorized sliding movement of said last named end of the arm to detach the same from the frame.
5. In aY window construction, the combination with a frame and a sash mountedon said frame, of means for limiting the movement vof the sash to open position including an arm having 'one end pivotally connected to said sash and having the opposite end detachably mounted upon the frame and a key operated lock also carried'by the providing forand limiting the opening movement of said sash to an open frame and cooperating with the connection between the arm and frame to prevent unauthorized removal of said arm from the frame.
6. In a window construction, the combination with a frame and a sash mounted on said frame for movement relative thereto, of means for limiting movement of the sash including an arm having one end operatively connected to the sash and carrying an attaching member at the opposite end, said member having a reduced portion extending transversely of the arm and provided with an enlarged head portion, a. bracket xed preventing unauthorized movement of the arm relative to the bracket to disengage the former from the latter.
