Description

May l0, 1932. w. BRUGMANN DOOR WORKER Filed JulyB, 1929 www Patented May l0, 1932 UNITED S''T WILLIAM IBRU'GIVIANN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA nooR WORKER Application led July 8, 1929. Serial No. 376,728.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide mechanism for controlling the operation of double hinged spring closed doors, for example of garages, in such a way that one door may be partly opened and closed suiiciently 'to permit a person to enter and leave the garage without working the other door and in such a way that when one door is opened wide, the other is also automatically opened wide, and both doors are automatically locked in open position but are conveniently released for closing.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description taken in con nection with the accompanying drawings and at the end of which the invention will be claimed.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a top or plan view partly in section and somewhat diagrammatic in character.
Fig. 2 is an elevational view.
F ig. 3 is a perspective view, and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view generally on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3 and drawn to an enlarged Scale illustrating features of operation.
In the drawings, l and 2 are the double hinged doors of, for example, argarage, and 3 are springs for normally closing the doors l and 2 and for keeping them closed. 4 and 5 are brackets arranged on the inside and near the top of the hinged edge of each door. 6 is a link connecting the ends of the brackets and it is shown as provided with a turn buckle 7. The brackets 4 and 5 are constructed and arranged to permit partial opening of the door 2, while the other door l remains closed, and of opening the closed door 1 upon further opening of the door 2. Oneway of doing this is to make the bracket 5 comparatively short and to space it comparatively far or inward from the hinged edge 8 of the door 2, and to make the bracket 4 of curved form and to space it comparatively near the hinged edge 9 of the door 1, with its free end l() projecting somewhat in rear of the jamb of the door. 1l is a keeper depending from the top of the door frame, and it is adapted to automatically engage the link6 when the doors. are open and in that way to keep them open. @ne way to accomplish this" is to bevel the edge l2 of the keeper so that the link 6 is depressed and enters between the jaws of the keeper. 13 is a chain or the like by means of which the link 6 can be pulled j out of the jaws of the keeper when it is desired to close the doors. It may be remarked that when the door 2 is opened beyond a sufficient distance, which is usually wide enough to admit of the ingress and egress of a person, the link contacts with the door l and in that way may assist in opening the latter or in starting it to open. It will be understood that the bracket 4 is sufficiently resilient to permit of the described engagement and disengagement of the link with the keeper.
From the foregoing description it is eviV dent that the described mechanism not only affords convenient ingress and egress both "'f for a person and for a car, but also by holding the doors open prevents injury to a car such as not infrequently occurs when garage doors blow to or otherwise inopportunely close.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates that modifications may be made in details of construction and arrangement and matters of mere form without .departing from the spirit of the in- Q vention which is not limited to such matters c-r otherwise thanthe prior art and the appended claims may require.
I claim:
A. combination including a door frame, a pair of cooperating doors hingedly mounted in said frame, brackets mounted on the upper corners of said doors adjacent the hinges thereof, a link connecting said brackets and adjustable in length, a keeper on said door frame for receiving said link therein when the doors are open to retain them in open position, one of said brackets being curved rearwardly toward the hinged edge of the door on which it is mounted to permit limited opening of the other door While said first mentioned door remains closed and said bracket being resilient to permit movement of said link relative to said keeper, and a chain for moving said bracket to Withdraw said link from said keeper.
