This invention relates to operating mechanisms for horizontally swinging members, such as doors, gates andthe like, the invention being especially adapted for use in connection with the doors of garages, so that the occupant of an automobile will not be required to get out for the purpose of opening or closing the doors.
To this end, the invention provides means operated by the weight of an automobile for opening the doors, said means including a depressible tread or treads, and novel and ad justable means actuated` thereby and connected with the doors to operate the latter.
The invention further includes means for holding the doors in open position and for releasing the holding means, the last mentioned means being both manually and automatically controlled.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in theaccompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation showing the en` trance to a garage with the invention applied.
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view showing the approach to the garage and illustrating the means for holding the doors in open position and the means for releasing the doors.
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view showing the manner of pivotally Vmounting the doors.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character indicates a portion of a garage whose entrance.
is adapted to be closed by a pair of doors 11.
These doors are mounted for horizontal swinging movement and for this purpose the l doors have extending from their top and bottom edges, pivots or trunnions 12, the lattery operating in sockets 13 positioned at the top and bottom of the door frame. The pivots or trunnions are spaced from the side edges of rprovided foreach of the arms .16 and the vinner ends of the rods have flexible connections 21 which carry bolts or fastening devices 22, by means of' which the innerfends of the rodsfare secured to the doors beyond the trunnionsl2. Y Y
The approach is provided with an opening '23'and hingedly` mountedl within this openingv as indicated at 24 isa tread 25. This tread may if desired be formed' in twosec tions and is yieldingly forced upward by means of springsr26 positioned beneath; the
tread. Rigidly secured to opposite endsof the tread as shownat 27 are arms 28 whose outer ends operate in the lower endso'f'the arms 16.
The armsv 28 thus. have a sliding'pivotal connection-with the arms lsothat when .the tread is depressed, the upper ends of the arms 1.6 will `move inward toward the doors so` as to open the latter'as indicatedl by the dotted lines in Figure 2 of the drawings.
The above o peration Vwillocour-when the front wheels of an automobile pass over the tread and? when the'latter is depressed, it will be held in depressed position by means of spring actuated latches 30which are secured to the under face of the tread andwliich engage lreepers 31y carried by the structure of the approach 15. The doors 11 will thus re-V main openso that the-automobile vmay enter the garage. As soon as the latches 30 are released, the action of the springs 26 will force the vtread upward so that the doors will be closed. Y
-V This release of the latches 30 may be effected by means of a cable 32 whichoper'atesover pulleys 33 carried by an arm 34. Thiscable passes through the approach structure land has connected `thereto cables 35 which are .lf3-fl slots 29 .provided in 15 In order that the doors maybe automatically closed when the automobile leaves the gara-ge, the cables 35 have connected thereto a cable 36 which extends through the ap proach structure and passes over a pulley 37. with its end anchored as at 38. As the automobile leaves the garage, it may be steered so that one of its front wheels will pass over the cable 36 and as this cable is raised above the plane of the approach, this portion of the cable will be depressedl so as to pull upon the cables 85 and release the latches 30.
The invention is susceptible .of various changes in its form, proportions andv minor details of construction and the right is Vhereiin reserved to make such'changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims. I-Iaving described theinvention what is claimed is c 1. In combinationwith a building having an entrance and an inclined platform therefor and provided with an opening, a door for the entrance, trunnions carried by the upper and lower. edges of the door and adjacent one of the side edges thereof, journalscarriedl by the building to receive the trunnions, a treadle hinged at oneend to the platform and closing the opening, operating means connected to the free end of the treadle and to the hinged edge of the door, tension means carried by the platform and engaged by the treadle to automatically return the treadle to its normal position when disengaged by a vehicle, a latch to hold the treadle in a dooropening position, and means to operatethe latch to permit the tension means to close the oor. v
2. In combination with a building having an entrance and an inclined platform there- -Y for and provided with an opening, a door for the entrance, trunnions carried by theupper and lower edges of the door `and adjacent one the side edges thereof, ournals carried by the building to receive the trunnions, a treadle hinged at one end to the platform and closing the opening, a vertically disposed arm pivotally mounted at the lower end to the platform, an operating rod having universal connection between the door and arm, a second arm secured to the treadle and pivotally and slidably connected to the first mentioned arm, tension means carried by the platform to engage the treadle to automatically returnthe treadle to its normal position when disengaged by a vehicle,'a latch to hold the treadle in adoor-opening position, and means to operate the latch to permit the tension meansto close the door.
