Patented Nov. 13, 1923.
TD -ST'FES Mltagg FFLT SELF-OPENING GARAGE DOOR.
Application filed December 28, 1921. Serial No. 525,528.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ADAM FunnsrnNnEnc,
a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at lVatson, in the county of Humboldt and Province of Saskatchewan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-@peiling Garage Doors, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a self# opening garage door. The principal object of the invention is to provide a device in combination with garage doors, whereby the doors may be automatically opened and closed by an automobile entering or leav ing the garage without the necessity of the driver moving from his seat.
Vith this and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
Figure 1 is a front plan view illustra-ting my present invention embodied in conjunction with a garage, the device being in operation.
Figure 2 is a side elevation, further illustrating the construction of my invention.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of one of the hinge members used in conjunction with the runway mechanism.
Jferring to the drawings, like numerals designate like parts in the various drawings.
rlhe numeral 4 indicates the` garage, 5 and G the sliding doors, 7 and S the runways and 9 and 10 the members for guiding the runways. 11 and 12 indicate the runway hinge members.
As an automobile enters the garage, the
bers 11 and the same press the adjustable runways 7 and 8 downward. This downward movement pulls the flexible cable 13 downwardly and the flexible cable being connected to the doors 5 and 6 at' 1-1 and 15, pull the doors open as indicated diagrammatically in Figure 1.
When the weight is removed from the runways the doors automatically gravitate to closed position due to the inclination of the front wheels bear on the front hinged memtracks 18, The springs 16 and 17 tend to cushion the closing movement of the doors and to prevent the cable 13 from becomingslack. Obviously when the doors move from open to closed position the runways will be raised and repositioned for subsequent actuation.
Then an automobile leaves the garage. the action is similar. The runway hinges, more clearly indicated in Figure 3, are positioned as indicated diagrammatically in Figure 2 and assume the position indicated by dotted lines when the automobile is entering or leaving the garage. The sliding doors G and Y are slidably mounted on the track 18, the doors being hung from bracket 19 which have the rollers 20 positioned to bear on the track 18, also, the cable 13 is preferably housed in a casing 21, the cable passing over the pulleys 22 which serve to keep the same in proper position. The runways 7 and 8 need not be of any particular construction, as all that is required is a fiat running surface for the wheels of the automobile.
lhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction of my invention, this is capable of variation and modification without departing` from the spiritof the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be restricted to the precise details of construction specified, but desire lo avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction of my invention will be clearly understood and therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted.
lVhat I claim as new is:
In combination with a doorway a pair of sliding doors therefor, said doors hung for movement along the opposite ends of a track which is inclined downwardly from either' end toward the center, a pair of wheelways extending under and to either side of said doorway each of said wheelways having` a depressible member of T shape in cross-sec'- tion. a flexible member provided at either end with a resilient element one of said elcv ments being attached to each door near the upper7 inner corner thereof, said flexible member being trained over pulleys arranged in vertical housings at either side ofeaid doorway and extends under said wlieelways for actuating the doors to open position when weight is placed .on the depressilile members, the inclination of said track Cansingthe doors to close hy graif'ity when the 'wel ght is removed.
