Description

Dec. 28,1926.
S. W. MAHAFFEY V -AUTOMATIC WINDOW-FASTENER Filed June 15 1925 ATTORNEY.
Patented Dec. 28, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL W. MAHAFFEY, 0F CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIG'NOR OF ONE-HALF TO WALKER DE HAVEN LEE, OF EAST CLEVELAND, OHIO.
AUTOMATIC WINDOW FASTENER.
Application filed June 15, 1925. Serial No. 37,228.
The objects of the invention are to provide an automatically acting fastener for window sashes which will fasten both of the sashes in any desired position and while permitting the. upper window to be raised and the lower window to fall will prevent either Window from being opened until the fastener is released by the operator from the inside of the house.
The device operates upon both sashes and may be positioned to permit either window to be opened sufiiciently to provide for ventilation but when only one window is open neither window can be thereafter opened any wider from the outside to permit a burglar to enter.
The fastener operates upon both windows so that while the upper window can be raised or the lower one lowered neither window can be opened further. The invention comprises a locking lever pivoted upon the upper bar of the lower window sash and having its outer end engageable with the vertical side of the upper sash, a spring for normally pressing locking edge of the lever into engagement with the vertical side of the upper sash, a base plate upon which the lever is pivoted, and a projecting arm by means of which the lever is released from its engagement.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim. In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is a perspective illustrating the action of the locking lever; Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the transverse window bars in the closed position showing the locking lever: Fig. 3 is a detail of the lever: Fig. 4 is a detail of the spring, and Fig. 5 is a detail of the base member.
In these views A represents the lower bar of the upper window, sash B represents the upper bar of the lower window sash. C represents the base plate which is secured to the upper bar of D is the spring an the lower window sash. d E is the locking lever.
The lever E is positioned with its lower or inner end engaging with the socket eyes or loops F, F, outwardly projecti and is also provided with the ng arm G by means of which it is operated.
A spring secured at its rear end at L upon the base plate, normally presses against the arm G, and forces the locking end E of the lever into engagement with the vertical side of the upper sash.
By depressing this arm the lever can be released and either or down at will, bu
sash can be removed up t when the lever is in the locking position neither sash can be opened an y further, although either one can be closed, although both sashes can be removed togther to leave an opening at the top or bottom of the wind 0w as desired.
The base is preferably provided with forwardly inf-lined side walls J, J, between which the lever is vent the entrance movable, and which preof dust or objects that might interfere with the action of the lever,
and the hinge eyes are spaced apart to permit the passage of the operating arm and spring, and a reces the base plate also s K in the front edge of facilitates this action.
Having described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l n a device of the character described constructed of sheet metal, a base plate having vertical forwardly inclined side walls, and
hand this 28 day of April, 1925.
