39 ALEX NAZURIAN ATTORNEYS United States Patent Filed Dec. 18, 1959, Ser. No. 860,494 4 Claims. ((31. 292221) This invention relates to improvements in door latches, and, more particularly, to a novel and improved door latch mechanism adapted for use on storm doors, screen doors or the like.
It is an important object of this invention to provide an improved door latch which may be locked and unlocked from the inside side of the door only and which is simple in construction, economical of manufacture and efficient in operation.
It is another object of this invention to provide a novel and improved door latch and lock mechanism which may be easily and quickly installed.
Other and further objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description and claims and may be understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, which by way of illustration shows a preferred embodiment of the invention and what I now consider to be the best mode in which I have contemplated applying the principles of my invention. Other embodiments of the invention may be used without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the appended claims.

Referring now to the drawings, the latch of the present invention is shown as applied to a door generally indicated by the numeral 10 and which has an inner side 11 and an outer side 12. The door it} is adapted to be closed against a conventional door jamb (not shown), and this door may be either of wood or metal, as desired.
The latch includes a casing, generally indicated by the numeral 13, which is mounted on the inner side 11 of the door by screws 14 which extend through the flanges 15 formed along the upper and lower edges of the casing 13 and seated against the door inner side 11. The casing 13 has an opening 16 at one side thereof, and a latch bolt 17 pivoted within casing 13 on a pin 18 may be swung into and out of the casing 13 through the bolt opening 16. The bolt 17 is shown in FIG. 6, in solid lines, in its latched position in which it projects into a suitable recess in the door jamb. A spring 19 has one end reacting against the end wall 20 of casing 13 and is wrapped around pin 21 and has its other end located within the recess 22 in the bolt 17 so as to urge the bolt 17 outwardly of the casing into its latched position.
The casing 13, at the side thereof opposite the bolt opening 16, is provided with an elongated slot 23 and a pivoted handle member 24- is pivotally mounted within casing 13 by a pin 25 extending between the top and bottom walls 26 and 27, respectively, of the casing 13. The handle member 24 projects outwardly through the slot 213 and at its inner end is provided with a hooked portion 2% adapted to engage a cam portion 29 formed on the inner side of the bolt 17. The hooked portion 28 comprises the pair of spaced apart cam arms 30 and 31 which straddle the bolt 17 and have noses on the inner ends thereof for engagement with the lugs 32 and 33 which comprise the cam portion 29. When the handle member 24 is pivoted in a counterclockwise direction, as viewed in FIG. 6, the ends or noses of the members 3t) and 31 will react against the cam surfaces 34 and 35 on the lugs 32 and 33, respectively, to swing the latch bolt 17 in a clockwise direction on pin 18, as viewed in FIG. 6, to the dotted line position shown in FIG. 6, in which position the bolt 17 is in the retracted position from the door jamb. When the handle member 24 is released the spring 19 will return the latch bolt 17 and handle member 24 to their normally latched positions.
A bracket 36 is adapted to be mounted on the outer side of the door it) and includes an integral handle portion '37 having the lower end 38 formed to be seated in a mating recess 39 in the outer side 12 of the door 10. The bracket 36 includes the housing portion 40 which is provided with the integral upper and lower inwardly extended rods or arms 41 and 42, respectively, and these arms extend through the opening 43in the door 10 toward the flanges 15. The periphery of the housing seats against the outer side 12 of the door 10 so as to enclose the opening 43. It will be seen in FIG. 2, that the outer ends of the arms 41 and 42 are provided with an inwardly extended threaded hole for the reception of the screws 14 from the flanges 15 of the housing or casing 13'. The threading of the screws'14 into the arms 41 and 42 thus serve to secure the casing 13 and the bracket 36 to the door 10.
The housing 4! is hollow and is enclosed on the inner side thereof with the wall 44. A plunger 45 is slidably mounted inthe housing so and has its outer end extended through the hole 46 in the wall or plate 44. As shown in FIG. 6 the plunger 45 engages at its inner end with rear curved side of the hooked end portion 28 of the handle member 24. The outer end of plunger '45 is fixedly connected to the finger but-ton or finger member, as by being made integral therewith, and this finger button is indicated by the numeral 48. The finger butt-on 48 is provided with the flanges 56 on the inner side thereof which prevent the button from being moved outwardly through the hole 49 in the front wall of the housing 40. I V
The plunger 45 is normally biased outwardly to the position shown in FIG. 2 by means of the spring 51 which has its outer end abutting the button 48 and its inner end abutting the plate 44. It will be seen that when the finger button 48 is pressed inwardly the plunger 45 will engage the side 47 of the handle member 24, as shown in FIG. 6,
and the handle member 24 will be moved counterclockwise into the dotted line position shown in FIG. 6 and indicated by the numeral 52. The bolt 17 will thus be moved inwardly to permit the door to be opened.
A locking disk 53 is located within the casing 13 and to the opposite side of the bolt 17. The disk 53 is fixed to the shaft 54- which extends outwardly through the hole 55 in the wall 243. integral inwardly extended arm 57 which has the sidewardly and outwardly extended lug 58 on the outer end thereof. The disk 53 may be turned or rotated in either direction to rotate the locking disk 53 between locked and unlocked positions thereof by means of the operating member 56. When the operatingmernber 56 is in the position shown in FIG. 2, in the solid line position, the latch is free to be operated, that is it is in the unlocked position. When the operating member 56 is moved to the position shown by the numeral 60 in FIG. 1 the latch may be locked in either the open or closed positions, that is, open or closed positions of the bolt 17. If the bolt 17 is in the dotted line position of FIG. 6 when the operating member 56 is turned to the position 60 of FIG. 1 the lug 58 will enter the slot 59 formed on the lower side of the bolt 17 to lock the bolt 17 in the open position. The door may thus be pushed open freely without the need for operating the bolt 17. If the bolt 17 is in the solid line position shown in FIG. 6 when the operating member 56 is turned to the position 60 of FIG. 1 the lug 53 will be positioned behind the bolt 17 and between the bolt and the wall 20 and the bolt 17 will be locked in the position shown in solid lines in FIG. 6. Experience has shown that the latch mechanism of the present invention is an efficient and economical device.
While I have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is understood that this is capable of modification, and I therefore do not wish to be limited to the precise details set forth but desire to avail myself of such changes and alterations as fall within the purview of the following claims.
What I claim is:
1. A door latch comprising a casing adapted to be mounted on one side of a door, a latch bolt pivoted in said casing and movable between latched and unlatched positions, a handle pivoted in said casing and engageable with said bolt for moving the same to its unlatched position, spring means urging said bolt to latched position, a bracket adapted to be mounted on the other side of the door, a plunger slidably mounted in said bracket and having an inner end adapted to project through an opening in the door into engagement with said pivoted handle to cause the latter to move said bolt to unlatched position, a movable locking member supported on a horizontally disposed rotatable shaft in said casing and movable into the path of movement of said bolt to lock said bolt in latched position, said bolt being provided with a slot on the lower side thereof, and said movable locking member being movable into engagement with said slot when the bolt is in the unlatched position to retain the same in said unlatched position.
2. A door latch comprising a casing adapted to be mounted on one side of a door, a latch bolt pivoted in said casing and movable between latched and unlatched positions, a handle pivoted in said casing and engageable with said bolt for moving the same to its unlatched position, spring means urging said bolt to latched position, a bracket adapted to be mounted on die other side of the door, a plunger slidably mounted in said bracket and having an inner end adapted to project through an opening in the door into engagement with said pivoted handle to cause the latter to move said bolt to unlatched position, a movable locking member supported on a horizontally disposed rotatable shaft in said casing and movable into the path of movement of said bolt to lock said bolt in latched position, said bolt being provided with a slot on the lower side thereof, said movable locking member being movable into engagement with said slot when the bolt is in the unlatched position to retain the same in said unlatched position, said plunger being provided on the outer end thereof with a finger button, said button having means thereon for engaging said bracket when the plunger is in the inoperative position, and, means for normally biasing said button into engagement with said bracket to maintain the plunger in the inoperative position.
3. A door latch comprising a casing adapted to be mounted on one side of a door, a latch bolt pivoted in said casing and movable between latched and unlatched positions, a handle pivoted in said casing and engageable with said bolt for moving the same to its unlatched position, spring means urging said bolt to latched position, a bracket adapted to be mounted on the other side of the door, a plunger slidably mounted in said bracket and having an inner end adapted to project through an opening in the door into engagement with said pivoted handle to cause the latter to move said bolt to unlatched position, a movable locking member supported on a horizontally disposed rotatable shaft in said casing and movable into the path of movement of said bolt to lock said bolt in latched position, said bolt being provided with a slot on the lower side thereof, said movable locking member be ing movable into engagement with said slot when the bolt is in the unlatched position to retain the same in said unlatched position, said plunger being provided on the outer end thereof with a finger button, said button having means thereon for engaging said bracket when the plunger is in the inoperative position, means for normally biasing said button into engagement with said bracket to maintain the plunger in the inoperative position, a handle portion integrally formed in the lower end of said bracket, said handle portion having the lower end thereof formed for insertion into a mating hole in the door, and means extending through said opening in the door for fixedly securing together said casing and bracket.

A door latch comprising a casing adapted to be mounted on one side of a door, a latch bolt pivoted in said casing on a vertically disposed shaft and movable between latched and unlatched positions, said latch bolt having a cam lug extended outwardly from the top and bottom sides thereof, a handle pivoted in said casing and being provided with a pair of spaced apart cam arms which straddle the latch bolt and are engageable with the cam iugs on said bolt for moving the bolt to its unlatched position, spring means urging said bolt to latched position, a bracket adapted to be mounted on the other side of the door, a plunger slidably mounted in said bracket and having an inner end adapted to project through an opening in the door into engagement with said pivoted handle to cause the latter to move said bolt to unlatched position, a movable locking member supported on said casing on a horizontally disposed rotatable shaft and movable into the path of movement of said bolt to lock said bolt in latched position, said bolt being provided with a slot, said movable locking member being movable into engagement with said slot when the bolt is in the unlatched position to retain the same in said unlatched position, said plunger being provided on the outer end thereof with a finger button, said button having means thereon for engaging said bracket when the plunger is in the inoperative position, means for normally biasing said button into engagement with said bracket to maintain the plunger in the inoperative position, a handle portion integrally formed on the lower end of said bracket, said handle portion having the lower end thereof formed for insertion into a mating hole in the door, and, means extending through said opening in the door for fixedly securing together said casing and bracket.
