Application July 13, 1948, Serial No. 38,481
(Cl. 'l0-208) 1 Claim. l
This invention relates to improvements in locks for movable closures and refersparticularly to a lock of the type described manipulatable by a handle which when in locked position is inaccessible to manipulate the lock.
One of the features of the present invention resides in a lock construction wherein the manipulatable handle therefor is maintained in an inaccessible position when the device is locked, the device being characterized in that it contains a minimum number of easily constructed, easily assembled parts.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the accompanying drawings and followed detailed description.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a front View of a locker upon which my lock may be used.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of the lock handle.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2 showing the lock in locked position.
Fig. 4 is a similar View illustrating the lock in unlocked position.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a sectional View taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 7 is a detailed sectional view taken on line I---'I of Fig. 3.
Referring in detail to the drawings, I indicates a locker comprising a frame 2 and legs 3, a door 4 being mounted by means of hinges 5 upon one of the frame members. A lock assembly I5, comprising the concepts of my invention is mounted upon the door 4 of the locker I. However, it is to be understood that my lock construction may be employed upon automobile doors, cabinet doors, automobile trailer doors or in general upon any type of movable closure and, hence, my invention is not to be limited to the specific environment shown and described.
The lock assembly 6 comprises a tubular housing member 'I having a ange 8 for mounting the same upon a closure 4. An aperture 9 is provided in the closure 4, the same being coaxial with the axis of the tubular housing 'I. A face plate or guard I0 is mounted upon the front face of the door 4, the same being provided with an aperture II registering with aperture 9 in the door.
A bushing I2 is positioned within apertures 9 and II and the inner end of said bushing extends into the interior of the tubular housing 'I. A tubular spindle I3 is positioned within bushing'- size than the handle I2, the latter serving as a bearing permitting ready slidability and rotatability of the spindle. A handle I4 is rigidly mounted upon one end of the spindle I3, said handle, as will be hereinafter more fully described, being adapted to manipulate the latches employed to fasten the door in closed position.
The face plate I0 is provided with a recess I5 conforming in shape and slightly larger in I4 whereby when said spindle is moved to its innermost position within the housing 'I the handle I4 nts snugly within the recess I5. A rectangular sectioned pin I6, preferably square in cross-section is adapted to be positioned within the housing 'I and within the spindle I3. In the interior of the spindle I3 and intermediate its length, a web I'I is positioned, the web preferably being integral with the spindle. Web II is provided with a rectangular aperture conforming with the section of pin I6, through which said pin passes, the pin being relatively slidable, but non-rotatable with respect to the spindle. A head I8 is carried upon one end of pin I6 to limit the outward movement of the pin with respect to the spindle.
The end of pin I6 protrudes through an aperture I9 which is enlarged with respect to the pin whereby the pin may rotate freely therein. A latch 2l] is rigidly mounted upon the protruding end of pin I6 and is rotatable therewith, the latch 20 having an end '2| which is engageable with the frame member 2 to latch the door 4 when the lock assembly is in locked position. Intermediate the pin I6 and the end 2l of the latch 2D a rod 22 is pivotally secured to the latch and similarly a rod 23 is pivotally secured to an oppositely extending portion 24 of said latch. The opposite ends of the rods 22 and 23 are respectively connected to bolts 25 and 26 which engage with the top and bottom frame members when the door is latched, the arrangement being such that end 2I and bolts 25 and 26 may be disengaged from the frame 2 when pin I5 is rotated counterclockwise, as Viewed in Fig. 5.
A coil spring 21 embraces pin I6 and. is confined between the end of housing 'I and web Il, said spring normally tending to move spindle I3 outwardly. A keeper 28 mounted upon the inner face of the closure 4 extends in abutting relamovement of bar 33. A lug 35 extends into an end of aperture 34 and functions as an anchoring pin for v'a coil spring 36 which yis`conined between an endl of said aperture and boss 3|. The head 31 upon screw 32 prevents lateral movement of the bar 33 with respect to the boss 3l.
One end of the bar 33 is adapted to be `positioned in slot 29, said bar being urged inwardly with respect to said slot by spring 36. The'` arrangement is such that when handle I4 and spindle I3 are in their innermost position, that is, when handle I4 is positioned in recess I5, the end of bar 33 which extends into slot 29 engages in the notch3 in spindle I3 and prevents outward movement o the spindle. The opposite end of bar 33 is provided with an aperture 38 into which a1 cam member 4D is positioned. The cam member, 4U comprises a portion of -a lock 4I rotatably positioned in door 4, the lock being operablf,r rotatable by means of key 42. Rotation of lock 4I and, hence, cam member 40 functions to move bar .33 axially to retract the end of said bar from notch 33 against the compression of spring 36.
In operation, when spindle I3 and handle Mare in their outermost position ,determined by contact of web I'I with the head I8 upon pin I6, as shown Vbest in Fig. 4, the bolts 25 and 2S and the latch 2l may be manipulated so as to disengage l,
l them from frame 2. Thus the door 4 can be opened or closed as the case may be. To lock the door, the handle I4 is so turned as to cause bolts 25'and 26 to engage the frame members .2 and then the handle is `pushed inwardly until it is positioned in recess I5. At this time the end of bar 33 engages in the .notch 30 and holds said handle in retractedposition. The door thencannot be opened except by means of key 42 by which means cam 4E) may be rotated to slide bar 33 retracting the same from notch 30. Spindle I3 unrestrained by bar 33 will then move outwardly under the inuence of spring 21 to position handle I4 in its outer operative position.
I claim as my invention:
A lock for a movable closure comprising a face plate adapted to be mounted upon the front of said closure, said face plate having a recess, a hollow housing 'adapted Yto be-mounted upon the rear o1" said closure, said face plate and closure having connecting apertures which open into said hollow housing, a bearing sleeve in said closure aperture of greater length than the thickness of said closure, a hollow spindle slidably positioned in ,said bearing sleeve and said face plate aperture, a handle carried by said spindle and positionable in said recess, a pin slide-bly .but non-rotatably connected to said spindle intermediate its length, a latch rigidly mounted upon said pin exteriorly of Vsaid housing, whereby said latch may be rotated by said handle, resilient means embracing said pin and bearing at opposite ends against said housing and an intermediate portion of said spindle respectively for urging said handle and spindle outwardly from said housing, said spindle being slidably supported by said bearing sleeve throughout the entire length of said bearing sleeve, and means for removably holding said spindle within said housing zand said handle within said recess.
