One of the objects of the invention is toprovide a door latch so constructed that a party may, if desired, lock himself within the motor vehicle, but he cannot accidentally lock himself out of the motor vehicle. Another object is to provide 7 a door latch with control means operable from inside the door to render the outside door handle ineffective and with means operable upon closing the door to render the control means ineffective. These and other objects of the invention lwill be apparent from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation ofa door latch, showing an embodiment of my invention; with the latch bolt inlatching position and the other parts in non-dogging position; 7

t ion thereto by the tongue 7, which is struck out from the body and has a reduced end portion riveted over the 'cover plate, andby the tongue 8 which extends from and is v .shorter than the cover plate, this tongue passing through the flange 6 and being riveted thereover at its ends. The latch bolt is pivotally mounted between the case and the. cover plates, it being journalled upon the bushing 9, which in turn extends through the case and cover plates and is journalled therein. The keeper hasithe shoulder 10 engageable with the latch bolt to hold the door closed and the cam face ll engageable with the latch bolt upon swinging the latter upwardly from its latching position to its releasing ,position to cam *the latch bolt outwardly and therebyinitially open the door. This cam face also compels the latch bolt to. swing downwardly from its releasing position to its latching position upon closing the door.
For holding the latch. bolt in either its latching position or its releasing position, there is the off-center functioning device 12, ywhich comprises the plunger bars13 and 14 overlapping and slidably engaging each other and the coil spring 15 encircling these plunger bars and abutting their heads. One plunger bar fulcrums on the tongue 16 struck out from the case plate body 5 and the other plunger bar fulcrums on the extension 17 formed inv t'egrally with the latch bolt and extending rearwardly from the bushing. The arrangement is such that during the swinging of the latch bolt in either direction it is forcibly urged by the device as soon as the fulcrum point for the device upon the extensionofthe latch bolt is out of the line connecting the fulcrum point upon the tongue for the device and the pivotal axis of the latch bolt. 18 is the outside door handle having its spindle fitting in the polygonal recess 19 extendin longitudinally within the bushing 9. 20 is t e insidev door handle disposed in the present instance at a point remote from the door latch. This handle is mounted upon and secured to the-shaft 21 which is journalled in the case and cover plates 22 and 23 respectively of the remote control mechanism mounted upon the door. 24 is the crank arm secured upon the shaft 21 and pivotally connected at its free end to the rear end of the link 25. 26 is the spring engageable with opposite sides of the peripheral projection 27 upon the segmental portion of the crank arm to resiliently hold the crank arm in different positions of rotative adjustment. 28 is the coil spring having one end anchored to the case plate 22 and the other end anchored to the crank arm 24 and resiliently urging the crank arm in a direction to move the link 25 forwardly. The transverse end 29 of the coil spring for anchoring this spring to. the crank arm extends through the arcuate slot 30 of the crank arm and is engageable with the shoulders 31 and 32;formed upon the cover plate 23 to limit the swinging movement of the inside door handle. 33 is the lever journalled upon the bushin 9 between the latch bolt 3 and the case plate body 5 and having the transverse projection 34 extending over the latch bolt and engageable withthe extension 17 of the latch bolt to swing the latch bolt from its latching position 'to its releasing position. lever has at its free end the slot 35 through which extends the shouldered pin 36 upon the front end of the link 25. 37 is the lever fixedly secured upon the bushing 9 beyond the cover plate 2 and having the transverse projection 38 which passes over the edge of the cover plate and also over the projection 35 of the lever 33. 1 The projection 38 has the inturned flange 39 which is engageable with the adjacent edge of the projection 34 so that upon rotation of the outside handle 18 the lever 37 through the lever 33 moves the latch bolt 3 from its latching position to its releasing position.
For the purpose of rendering the outside door handle 18 ineffective, there is the pawl 40 which is pivotally mounted at its lower end upon the cover plate 2, which has the transverse flange 41 at its upper end located between the shouldered pin 36 and the case plate flange 6 and engageable with the shouldered pin and which has the shoulder 42 intermediate its ends and positioned toengage the projection 38 of the lever 37 when the pawl is swung toward the case plate flange 6. The coil spring 28 acting through the crank arm 24 and the link 25 normally hold the lever 33 and consequently the lever 37 in positions such that the projection 38 of the lever 37 will clear the shoulder 42 of the pawl 40 when the latter is swung into dogging position. By swingmg the inside door handle 20 in the bolt non-retracting direction to engage the spring 26 with the opposite side of the peripheral projection 27, the shouldered pin 36 is brought into engagement with the transverse flange 41 upon the'pawl 40 and this pawl is swung i to dogging position, at which time this shoulder engages behind. the projection 38 of the lever 37. At this time the outside door handle is held from rotation and cannot be used to retract the latch bolt, so that unauthorized entry into the motor vehicle cannot be accomplished through the outside door handle.
To prevent the possibility of a party being accidentally locked out of the motor vehicle, if the inside door handle were accidentally swung in a bolt non-retracting direction and if the door were closed, the pawl 40 is formed with the transverse arcuate flange 43 between its pivot and its shoulder 42 and so located that upon movement of the latch bolt 3 from its releasing to its latching positions its extension 17 contacts with this arcuate flange and compels the pawl to swing to its inoperative position, at which time its shoulder clears the projection 38 upon the lever 37 At this time the crank arm is compelled to swing to a position where the spring 26 engages the opposite side of the peripheral projection 27. 44 is a suitable spring looped around the pivot for the pawl 40 and having one end engaging the pawl and the other end engaging the tongue 45 extending transversely from the cover plate 2, this spring functioning to normally hold the pawl in its inoperative position. The tongue 45 is engageable with the lower end of the pawl to limit its movement under the action of the spring 44.
From the above description, it will be seen that the door latch illustrating an embodiment of my invention may be operated by a party within the motor vehicle to render the outside door handle ineffective in opening the door. It will also be seen that the door latch is so constructed that a party cannot accidentally lock himself out of the motor vehicle since the closing of the door automatically renders the outside door handle operative.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a door latch, the combination with a latch bolt, of levers at opposite sides of said latch bolt for actuating the same, a member engageable with one of said levers to hold the same from actuating said latch bolt, and means for actuating the other of said levers and controlling the engagement of said holding member and the first mentioned of said levers.

In a door latch, the combination with inside and outside door handles and a latch bolt, of a lever connected to said outside door handle and adapted to actuate said latch bolt, a second lever connected to said inside door handle and adapted to actuate said latch bolt, a member engageable with said first mentioned lever to hold the same from actuating said latch bolt, means dependent upon movement of said inside door handle for moving said member into engagement with said first mentioned lever, and cooperating means upon said latch bolt and member for returning said member upon movement of said latch bolt --in one direction.

In a door latch, a case plate, a cover 1 plate on the case plate, a bushing carried by said plates, a latch bolt journaled upon the bushing and having, an extension, and a lever ournaled on the bushing and having a proj ection engageable with the bolt extension to move the bolt from its latching to its releasing positions;

In a door latch, a case late, a cover plate on the case plate, a'bushmg-journaled in said plates and having a'longitudinally extending recess opening outwardly through one end thereof, a latch bolt journaled on the bushing, and actuating means for the latch bolt including an operating handle havmeans for the latch bolt including a handle spindle fitting in the polygonal recess. r

In a latch, a case plate, a cover plate carried by the case plate,a bushing extend ing through said plates, ailatch bolt carried by the bushing,and two levers associated with the bushing, one being journaled on the bushing and having'a projection en'- gageable with part of the bolt to move the latter from its latching to its releasing position, and the other of said levers being fixed upon the bushing and having a projection on gageable with a part of the lever aforesaid to cause the bolt to move from its latching to its releasing position.

and means carried by thedogging means and operable by a part of the bolt upon movement thereof incident to closing the door for rendering the dogging means inoperative.

a lever having a part engageable with the extension, and a pin carried by the link and engaging the lever, outside actuating means for the bolt including a lever-having a part engageable With the first mentioned lever, and means rendered efi'ective or inefi'ective by the pin of the inside actuating means todog the lever of the outside actuating means.

In a door latch, a latch bolt having an extension, inside actuating means for the bolt including a reciprocating remote control link, a lever having a part engageable with the extension, and a pin carried by the link and engaging the lever, outside actuating means for the bolt including a lever having a part engageable with the first mentioned lever, and a member operable by the pin of the inside means for dogging the lever of the outside means and rendered inoperative by the extension of the bolt upon movement of the latter incident to closing the door.
17. In a door latch, a latch bolt, inside actuating means for the bolt including a reciprocating remote control link, a member projecting laterally from the link, and a pivoted I element movable bysaid laterally projecting member, outside actuating means for the bolt including a pivotally mounted element, and means for dogging the outside means including a pivotally mounted member actuable by the pin.
18. In a door latch, a latch bolt, inside actuating means for the bolt including a reciprocating remote control link, a member pro]ecting laterally from the link, and a pivoted element movable by said laterally projecting member, outside actuating means for the bolt including a member operable by the pin and rendered inoperative by a part of said bolt upon movement thereof incident to closing the door. y
