The means 20 are not essential even should the bolt 18 be removed, when the door is closed, the lock cannot be tampered with without inflicting perceptible damage to the casing and without breaking the seal which engages the weighted tumbler which is presently to be described.
The face plate i l of the lock casing is provided with a round opening 2i which is arranged in a line with the conical head ll. of the bolt so that the bolt will be received through the said opening and into the re ferred to depression in theend of the door, when the door is moved on its tracks against the jamb.

The tumbler comprises a flat metallic member which is substantially semi-cylindrical in plan. F or distinction, the pivoted end of the tumbler is indicated by the numeral 24;, and the same may have arranged upon its inner edge, or the edge thereof opposite that which partly covers the opening 2i which may be in the path of contact with the upper securing elements for the face plate for limiting the inward swinging of the tumbler in the lock casing. The opposite or lower portion of the tumbler is gradually widened, as at 25, and from thence reduced to provide an extension 26 that passes through an opening 27 in the side plate 15, at its juncture with the face plate 14: of the lock casing. The extension is slotted, as at 28. The widened lower end of the tumbler, together with its extension, and also incident to the manner in which the tumbler is pivotaliy secured to the lock casing is influenced by the weight thereof, so that the slot 28 has its inner wall in a line with the, outer face of the side plate 15 when the tumbler is in bolt engaging position. The inner edge of the upper portion 24 of the tumbler is preferably bowed outwardly from its pivot to the rounded central portion of the said tumbler, and the lower part of this bowed portion is normally received opposite the upper portion of the rounded opening 21. The central and inner edge of the tumbler may be substantially straight, as indicated by the numeral 29, and this edge is also normally positioned to partly close the opening 21. The outward swinging of the, lock through its casing is limited by the contact of the shoulders thereon with the inner face of the side plate 15 of the casing. From the foregoing, it will be apparent that when the door is slid to bring its end against the jamb, the headed end of the swiveled bolt will be guided through the opening 21 in the lock casing, the conical end of the said bolt influencing the tumbler to swing the same inwardly of the lock casing and when the rear face or shoulder of the head of the bolt enters the depression, the tumbler will gravitate so that its inner edge will engage with the shoulder on the inner face of the head of the bolt and in this manner the door is automatically latch ed to the j amb. Of course, the door cannot be moved to open position until. a pressi'lre is exerted upon the projecting end 26 thereof to force the tumbler inwardly of the casing. Also by swivelling the bolt and pivotally supporting the tumbler, the door cannot be released from the jamb by any shocks or jars to which the car may be subjected. However, to positively hold the tumbler in looking position, when the ear is enroute, I pass through the slot 28 in the outer end or extension 27 of the tumbler 28 a seal29 of the ordinary character employed on railways.
It is thought that the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawings will fully set forth the construction, operation and advantages of. the improvement, but it is also thought necessary to add that the nature of the invention is such as to permit of the einployment of modificamenses tions in the construction and arrangement of the several parts thereof and consequently I am not to be limited to the precise construction shown and described, but am entitled to all such departures therefrom as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
Having described the invention, I claim 1. In combination with a sliding door and a jamb therefor, of a bolt member including a shank having an enlarged outer cone-shaped head and said shank being connected to the jamb, a pivotally supported tumbler on the edge of the door opposite the jainb, said tumbler comprising a fiat member which is arched in plan and which has its inner edge in the path of contact with the conical head of the bolt and designed to be engaged thereby, when the door is moved against the jamb, and by virtue of such engagement to move off of the head and to engage the shank of the bolt directly to the rear of the head, and means for limiting the swinging of the tumbler in two directions.
2. In combination with a sliding door and a jamb therefor, of a swiveled bolt having an outwardly projecting cone-shaped head on the jamb, a lock casing comprising a right angular plate secured to the edge of the door next the jamb and to the side of the door, EiilCl casing having a round opening therethrough in a line with the head of the bolt and designed to receive the head therethrough when the door is moved against the jamb, a tumbler having a lower weighted end pivoted in the casing and comprising a flat member which is substantially round in plan and which has its lower free end weighted whereby said tumbler will swing to cause its inner edge to be partly projected into the bolt opening in the lock casing to arrange the same in the path of contact with the head of the bolt, means limiting the swinging of the tumbler in this direction, means limiting the swinging of the tumbler in an opposite direction, and the lower end of the tumbler having a slotted extension passing through an opening in the side plate of the lock casing.
