SASH-FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGH MORRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oklahoma city, in the county of Oklahoma, State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to window locks and more particularly to the class of sash fasteners for windows.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a sash fastener adapted to both upper and lower sashes to permit the latter to be automatically looked upon the closing thereof.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a sash fastener adapted to be mounted in both upper and lower sashes to lock the same when closed and means adapted to be detachably connected to the fasteners to permit the unlocking of the sashes when in a closed position and to enable the raising and lowering of said sashes as the occasion may demand.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a sash fastener adapted to be so mounted in the sash so as to be concealed from view and that will automatically lock the sash when brought to a closed position in the window frame and a detachable key member for connection with the fastener to enable the unlocking thereof and also serve as a finger piece or grip for raising the window when desired.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a sash fastener which is simple in construction, automatic and thoroughly reliable inoperation, durable and inexpensive in the manufacture.
IVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawings which disclose the preferred form of embodiment of the invention and as brought out in the claims hereunto appended. However, it is to be understood, of course, that minor chan es, variations and modifications may be ma e such as come properly within the scope of the appended claims without Specification of Letters Patent.

Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
In the drawings the numeral 10 designates generally the window frame, which is of the usual and ordinary construction, and in which are slidably mounted upper and lower window sashes l1 and 12 respectively, the same also being of the ordinary and well known construction. Mounted in the said upper and lower sashes are sash fasteners or looks 13 and 14, each of which are disposed centrally within the cross rail of the window sash.
The sash fasteners comprise each a casing 15 embedded in the rail of the window sash and has secured thereto an elongated face plate 16, the same being disposed flush with the free edge of the rail of the window sash and secured thereto by suitable fasteners to secure and maintain the sash fastener in proper position in the window sash. Within the casing 15 are mounted hook or catch members 17 which latter are connected to the casing in spaced relation to each other by pivot pins 18, which also permit swinging movement of the said hook or catch members. The said hook or catch members 17 are formed with shanks 19 through which pass the pivot pins 18, and each of which terminates at its inner end in an eye 20, while the opposite end terminates in a hook head 21, the latter projecting through a suitable opening formed in the face plate. 16 secured to the casing.
Journaled centrally in the casing 15 is a hub 22, the latter rotatably mounted within the said casing by a pivot fastener 23. At diametrically opposite points of the hub 22 are formed projecting eyes 2 1, to which are loosely connected the inner loop terminals of links or pull rods 25, which latter have their opposite outer loop ends connected to the eyes 20 of the shanks 19 of the hook or catch members.
Interposed between the hook or catch members 17 is a retractile spring 26, the opposite ends of which are connected to perforated lugs 27 formed on the inner edges of the said catch members, and which spring serves to pull the hook heads 21 of the catch members toward each other. Between the outer edges of the catch members and the end walls of the casing are interposed eX- pansion springs 28, the opposite ends of which engage lugs 29 projecting from the outer edges of the catch members and the inner faces of the end walls of the casing, respectively, and in this manner the said expansion springs are held against accidental displacement during the locking and unlocking of the sash fastener.
To limit the swinging movement of the catch members 17 in one direction at their inner ends there are provided stop pins 30, which latter also serve to hold the said catch members in parallel relation to each other when in locked or unlocked position. Formed on the hub 22 is an extension finger 31, the latter adapted to engage a stop pin 32 disposed in the path of movement thereof to limit the rotation of said hub in one direction.
The catch members 17, are adapted to engage keeper plates 33, secured in adjacent parts of the window frame 10, and to enable this to be done each of said plates 33 is provided with spaced openings 34, through which pass the hook heads 21, of the catch members when the window sashes are brought to closed position so that the hook heads 21, will engage the innermost face of the plate to hold the window sashes lock-ed when in their closed position, and these catches may be released to enable the raising of the window sashes in a manner as will be hereinafter more fully described. The said keeper plates 33, are secured to the window frame by suitable fasteners to the cross head and bottom sill thereof.
Mounted upon the keeper plates 33 and correspondingly shaped to the openings 34 therein are closure plates 35, which latter are hinged as at 36 and are adapted to normally close the said openings 34: in the keeper plate. To maintain the closure plates 35 normally closed there are provided leaf springs 37 secured to the under faces of the keeper plates and projecting a dis tance across the said closure plates and in the path of movement thereof. It will be apparent that upon the engagement of the catch members 17 with the keeper plates 33 the said closure plates 35 will be caused to automatically swing open for the locking of the hook heads 21 of the catch members with the keeper plates, but upon disengagement of the said hook heads 21 from the keeper plate the said closure plates 35 will close the opening 34 to exclude dust and dirt therethrough.
The hub 22 in the upper sash fastener 13 is formed at one end with a square socket 38 to receive the square terminal of the shank of a detachable key 39, which latter is adapted to operate the catch members 17 to release the same from the keeper plate 33 to permit the opening of the upper win dow sash.
The hub 22 of the lower sash fastener 1 1 is formed with a circular internally thread-' ed socket 40 to receive the threaded end of a detachable key 11, which latter serves to release the catch members from the keeper plate 33 and when said catch members are in released position the key 39 will serve as a finger piece to permit the ready and easy raising of the lower sash.
Surrounding suitable keyholes formed in the upper and lower sashes and in communication with the sockets of the hubs 22 are escutcheon plates a2, which latter ar secured in any suitable manner.
It will be obvious that when the keys have been removed from the sockets of the hubs 22 and the sashes have been brought to a closed locked position it will be impossible for a malicious person to open the window sashes either from the outside or inside of a house.
l/Vhat is claimed is 1. A sash fastener comprising a casing, pivotal catch members mounted in said casing, a key engaging hollow hub rotatably mounted in the casing between said catch members, link connections between said catch members and the hub, and a detachable key insertible in the hub for turning the same.
2. A sash fastener comprising opposed pivotal members each terminating at one end in a hook head and at the 0 posite end in an eye, a socketed hub rotatably mounted between said members, eyes projecting at diametrically opposite points from said hub, link members connected to the eyes and to the catch members, springs acting upon the catch members for holding the same in normal locked position, and a key having one of its ends detachably engaging the socketed hub for rotating the same to release the catch members.
