Be it known that I, LORENZO Cozzo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Openers, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to a device wherebydoors may be latched or held in closed position and may be opened by merely pressing a button or plate. Vhile it is intended for general purposes, it is particularly applicable to cabinets.
The objects of this invention are to provide a simple and convenient mechanism for opening doors; to provide means whereby a door may be opened by pressing a button; to provide means for locking one or more doors and having a pressure release device for unlocking the same and also having a resilient means for openingthe doors;rand in general, to provide such an improved construction as will be described moreffully hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating this invention:
Figure 1 is a front view of a cabinet with my improved door opener applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3w3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4L is a sectional view taken on the line i-1 of Fig. 2; and,
Fig. 5 is a detail showing the door opening spring.
As shown in these drawings, 6 represents V a cabinet having doors 7 and 8 which are hinged at 9 in the usual manner. The cabinet has a shelf or cross-piece 10 and a top 11. Each door is preferably provided with a spring 12 for opening the same. This spring may be secured to the shelf 10 and its free end engages with a plate 13 on the door so that it will not injure the same.
Each door is provided with a hook or catch 1st which is rigidly secured thereto in any well-known manner. These hooks engage with a latch bar 15 which is mounted in a recess 16 in the cross-piece or partition 10. This bar is provided with lugs 17 which engage with springs 18 which raise the bar over the bar 15 and engage with the bar to lock the doors in closed position. When it is desired to open the doors, it is only necessary to press the button 21 which causes the bar 15 to move down out of engagement with the hooks 14. The springs 12 will then swing the doors outwardly to open position. lt will be seen that, by means of this arrangement, the cabinet may be constructed without any projecting latch members or knobs on the doors and will therefore, have a particularly neat and attractive appearance. Furthermore, the doors may be operated much more conveniently than by means of the ordinary latches. It will, of course, be noted that each door may be provided with a separate button and releasing device and it will also be noted that the device may be applied in various ways in order to produce the desired results. For
these reasons, do not wish to be limited to the exact construction herein shown and described, except as specified in the following claim:
The combination with a cabinet having doors and springs tending to open the doors, of a cross piece in the cabinet having a recess adjacent the free edges of the doors, an inside hook on each door above the cross piece, a beveled latch bar adapted to be seated in the recess inthe cross piece, springs tending to raise the bar to engage the hooks,
a rod secured to the bar extending through a hole in the cabinet 'where' a recess is also provided, and a button secured to the rod and adapted to be seated in the recess at the top of the cabinet where it is ordinarily invisible but operable to depress the bar for releasing the bar and hooks, and allowing the doors to open.
