2 Claims.
My invention relates to locks and more particularly to locks adapted to fit a conventional type of door.
The object of my invention is to provide a combination device that will operate both a conventional lock and latch.
Another object of my invention is to provide a lock that requires the manipulation of both the key, lock and latch in a synchronized manner for its complete operation.
Still another object of my invention is to incorporate a specially designed key and latch barrel in its construction.
A still further object of my invention is to construct the latch barrel in a manner to prevent its removal even though the latch actuating means is removed from the outside of the door.
Other and further objects of my invention will become more apparent as the description proceeds when taken in conjunction with the drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the entire device with the top plate removed and the latch bolt and lock in a locked position.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1, with the latch barrel turned, thereby retrieving the latch toward an open position. a
Figure 3 is a similar view, as shown in Figures 1 and 2, with the key turned to retrieve the lock member to a pre-determined position.
Figure 4 is a similar View showing the actuation and disengaging of the vertical sliding member to permit further movement of the lock.
Figure 5 is a similar view showing'both the latch and lock in an unlocked position.
Figure 6 is a front view of the entire lock assembly.
Figure '7 is a perspective view of the entire assembly with the latch actuating member and the key in position.
Figure 8 is a cross-sectional view of the assembly, taken at the line 88in Figure'l.
Figure 9 is a cross-sectional view of the assembly, taken at the line 9-9 in Figure 5.

Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and referring now to the same, the character 20 indicates a lock housing or enclosure having a front plate 2|, an upper plate 22, a lower plate 25, a rear plate 24 and a back plate 25. A removable cover plate 26 acts as a closing means when attached by means of the screw 2'! threadedly engaging the inwardly extending threaded member 28 terminating from the back plate 25. The entire assembly is retained in position while inserted into a door, by means of the two screws 29 inserted into the countersunk holes 30 in the front plate 2|.
A cross member consisting of two halves 3| and 3| slidably engages guide members 32 extending inward from the upper and lower plates 22 and 23 respectively. A sliding member 33 slidably engages the cross member 3| and acts as a retaining means when engaging the recessed portion 34 in the lock bolt 35. This lock bolt 35 extends through the front plate 2| and is kept from disengagement by the projecting portion 36 integrally formed therewith. The bolt 35 is slidab ly supported by the cross member 3|,v 3|. There is a latch member 3'! of rectangular or square cross section engaging and extending through the front plate 2|. A latch bolt 38 threadedly engages this member 31' at 39. A resilient member 4!! encircles the latch bolt 38 and is disposed between the cross member 3|, 3| and the latch member 31, and has for its purpose to urge the bolt 38' outward. The inwardly projecting end of the bolt 38 is provided with a, beveled head 4| having a contact member 42 which engages a member 43 extending, inwardly from the upper plate 22. The engagement of the member 42 with the member 43 prevents the resilient member 40 from forcing the bolt 38 outward too far.
In Figures 16 and 17 is shown. a latch barre-l 4'4 threaded at both ends and provided with handles 45 shown having their depending ends disposed downwardly and being held in engagement with the barrel 44 by means of the screw 46. The barrel 44 may be provided with apertures through the entire unit and the screw 46 may extend through the aperture in the barrel.
There is a pivoted member 41 mounted within an elongated slot 48 and hingedly attached near p 3 one end of the slot. The back plate 25 and the cover plate 26 of the housing 20 are provided with apertures 50 through which the barrel 44 is inserted, and the handles 45 are attached at both ends of the barrel in close contact with the outside face of the back plate 25 and the cover plate 26. When in this position, the pivoted member 41, being supported by the pin 49 at one end, will permit its depending end to drop downwardly, bringing it in direct alignment with the head 4|, and as the barrel 44 is revolved in the proper direction the bottom edge of the pivoted member 41 will contact the angular iaceof the beveled head The lock bolt 35 is slidably supported -bythe cross member 3|, 3! and is provided with a V shaped recess 5| at its upper 'face and a series of beveled steps 52 and 53 at its extreme end.
A key 54, shown in Figures 14 and 15, is provided with a similar pivoted member 55 mounted within a slot 56 by means of a pin 51. The back plate 25 and the cover plate 26 are provided with apertures at 58 and the key 54 is inserted into these apertures thereby permitting the pivoted member 55 to drop downwardl at the depending end in direct alignment with the lock bolt 35 for engagement with the V-shaped recess 5|.
The retaining lever 59 is pivotally mounted on the screw Bli'engaging the rear plate 24, and is deflected about the pivot 60 by contact of the cam'iace 62 on head 4| with the radially formed end '6! of the lever 59. The pivoting of the lever 59 is accomplished by the latch bolt 38 being urged laterally'by means of the element 41 on the latch barrel 44. t v
The movement of the pivoted lever 59 causes the end 6| to move in one direction while the other end 63 moves in the opposite direction against the tension of the spring 54 mounted on the pivot 69 thereby permitting engagement and disengagement of the end 63 with the steps 52 and 53 on the inner end of the lock bolt 35. The sliding member 33 is urged downwardly toward the recess 34 in the lock bolt 35 by means of a resilient member 95 attached at 65 to the sliding member 33 and at 9l to the lowerplate 23. V p
In operation, the lock functions as follows:
In neutral locked position the lock bolt 35 and latch member 31 extend outward from the plate 2| as shown in Figure 1. As the barrel 44 is turned, the pivot member 41 pushes against the angular surface of the beveled head 4 l, as shown in Figure 2, forcing the end 61 of the lever 59 and retrieving the latch member 37. As the end 5| of the lever 59 is pushed, it will move theend 63 of the lever 59 permitting the pivoted member 55 on the key 54'to push the lock bolt '35 for slidable engagement with the end 63 to the first step 53. The bolt 38 is again released, as shown by the dotted lines in Figure 4, and the pivoted member 41 on the barrel 44 is forced upward against the extending ledge 68 of the sliding member 33, thereby disengaging the member'33 from the recess 34 in the lock bolt 35, as shown in Figure 4, which permits the member 55 of the key 54 to push the end of thelock bolt '35 for slidable engagement with the end 63 of the pivoted lever 59 to the second step 52 as shown in Figure 5, thereby retrieving the bolt 35 all the way and when the barrel 44 is again brought in position, as shown in Figure 5, the latch member 31 is also retrieved and the lock is in an open position,
With the arrangement of the pivoted member 41 in the barrel 44 the barrel can be removed in only one direction and the member 41 would not permit the barrel to be pulled out from the opposite direction. 7
In the chosen embodiment of my invention, there are present many features not heretofore disclosed in the prior art. However, I am fully cognizant of the fact that many changes in the form and configuration of the various elements constituting the entire assembly may be made without affecting their operation or function, and I reserve the rightto make such changes as I may deem convenient and necessary without departing rfrom the spirit of my invention or the scope of the appended claims.
. ...Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the United States is:
1. A lock assembly of the character described comprising in combination, a rectangular housmg, a springactuatedlatch bolt, an actuating means for slidably moving said latch bolt against the tension of said spring, a'slidably supported lock bolt, both of said-bolts encased within said housing and caused to project outward at one end thereof, a rotatable barrel provided with a pivoted extending member, said barrel supported by the walls of said housing and employed as an actuating means for slidably moving said latch bolt, a key, said key provided witha "pivoted extending member, said key supported by said housing' and employed as an actuating means '"for slidably moving said lock bolt, a sliding member supported by and within said housing, said sliding member engaging a'recess in' 'said lock bolt, a resilient means for urging said 'sliding member into the recess insaid'lock bolt, the barrel employed as an operating means for said latch bolt being employed as a means .for"disengaging said lsliding member from the recess in said lock bolt; and a pivoted lever supported by one of the walls of said enclosure; said pivoted member retaining said bolts in proper alignment to permit the synehronizedaption of. said barrel and key for m v mentofsaid bolts.
