Be it known that I, BAYARD E. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident oi the village of Oak Park. in the county ot Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in an Automobile Door Lock; and I do hereby declare that the following isa Stull. clear` and exact description ci the same. reference being; had to the `accrmipanyingdrawings` and to the numerals ci: reference marked thereon. which :Form a part of this specification.
In the building of closed automobile bodies the thickness of the doors is governed bythe vertically adjustable sashes and the thickness ot the door 1rocks. In order that the thickness ot the doors may be reduced to a minimum, efforts have been exerted to produce an automobile door lock wherein the operating parts are so related that the thickness of the lock is reduced to a minimum consistent with strength and wearing qualities ot the operating parts.
This invention pertains to an improved type of a vehicle door lock of slight depth or thickness and wherein the locking bolt and an associated wedoje member are adapted to be operated by pivoted levers against t1 e action of controllingV springs to permit openino; oit' the door from either the exterior or interior of the automobile.
It .is an object ot this invention to provide an automobile door lock ol simplified construction and of minimum thickness, and adapted to be looked o 'r unlocked from both sides of the door to permit retraction of the locking` bolt and its wedge member by the operation oit' either an outer handle or an inner handle.
It is also an object of the invention to construct door lock ot comparatively slight depth wherein the latching members may be retracted Jfrom the inner side of a door by means of a handle adapted to be rotated in a direction which will simultaneously retract the latchingr members and swiner the door outwardly into open position with one operation.

It is furthermore an objectoi' the invention to provide a thin door lock wherein a locking' bolt and 'its associated wedge member are adapted to be normally moved and held in their projected positions by means of a spring` controlled lever pivoted on the wedge member and engaging the locking' bolt.
It is an important object of this invention to provide a thin door lock requiring' but a very shallow recess in the door to receive the same and haring` a lockinggcam adapted to be moved into locking' or unlockingposition from the innez1 side ol the door by means of a thumb handle or `from the exterior of the door by means ot a key actuated pin lock.
Other and further important objects ot this invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the specification and drawings.

The reference numeral 1 indicates a vehicle door and Q the door frame having a recess 3 therein. Rigidly secured to the door frame 2 is a strike plate Ll provided i with an opening 5, which registers with the door frame recess 3. Integrally formed on the strike plate l is a slightly inclined flange 6 which projects into the recess and affords an increased. bearing surface for a wedge bolt hereinafter described.
The inner side of the door 1 is provided with a comparatively shallow recess for receiving the relatively thin door lock embodying the principles of this invention. The lock illustrated in Figures 1 to 11 inelusive7 comprises a mounting plate or back plate 7, one end of which is bent forwardly at an angle to afford a flange 8 having an opening therein to permit the lock latching members to project therethrough. Secured in a stud vor boss 9 struck from the back plate 7 is the inner end of a coiled spring 10,` the outer end of which projects upwardly and engages against a lug 11 integ'rally formed on a pivoted lever or arm 12. To permit the thumb turn 41 to be operated from the inner side of the door when the lock 46 is locked, the stem tenen 44 is pulled out of engagement with the projection 45. The stem 42 may then be turned bythe thumb turn 41 to actuate the collar 43. l projection or lug 47 is formed on the collar'43 and is adapted to be engaged in a notch 48 provided in a dog or rain 49. The cam 49 is pivotally mounted on pin 50 secured to the back plate 7. A pin 51 isalso secured on the back plate '7 and has a spring 52 engaged therearound. The cam 49 is provided with a notch 54 for the purpose of engaging` the inner lower1 corner 55 of the latch bolt 23 when the latch bolt isl in projet-ted position and the cam 49 has been turned into lockingk engagement with the latch bolt, as shown in Figure 6L ln the modiiied form| or the device illustrated in Figures .12 to 16 inclusive the door lock comprises a mounting or back vplate 56. one end `of" which is bent at an angle to atford a flange 57 having an opening therein to permit the latching members to be pro jected therethrough. .Secured in a stud 56 on the back plate 56 is the inner end of a coiled lower spring 59.A the outer endy of which projects upwardly and is engaged against a shoulder 601of a slidable wedge bar 61. The outer end of the wedge bar 61 is deflected and has rigidly secured thereon. a wedge 62. which projects through an opening provided in a casing or housing 63. The casino' 63 is rigidly secured to the back plate 56 to enclose the operating mechanisms oit thedoor lock. Secured to the back plate 56 is a saddle '64, which projects outwardly from the casing opening` to aflord a guide .for the wedge 62. The spring 59 acts to hold the wedge 62 in its projected position.

The outer. or latching i end of the latch .bolt 66 has integrally formed. on the oppositev margins thereof flanges 67.. between which the wedge 62. is slidable. The inner end of the latch bolt 66 is slidable betwen two guide flanges or lugs 66 struck trom the back plate A flange or lug 69 is integrally formed on the inner end of the latch bolt. lntegrally formed on tie upper margin of the latch bolt is a shoulder 70, against the inner end of which the outer end of a coiled upper spring 71 is engaged. The inner end of the spring 71 is connected to a stud 72, which is rigidly secured to or st from the back plate 56. The spring 71 actsto normally hold the latch bolt 66 in its projected. position.
To retract the latch bolt 66 trom the eXterior of' a vehicle door, an outer handle is provided having a stem the inner squared end 73 of which projects into a squared opening formed in one end of a dog or roll back 74 supported between the back plate 56 and the casing` 63. The free end of the roll bar-lr 74 in contact with the iront end of the latch bolt shoulder so that whenthe outer handle is turned the roll back 74 will force the latrh bolt 66 inwardly together with. the wedge 62 since the inner ends o't the wedge bolt flanges 67 are in contact with the slidable wedge bar 61.

The. operation is as follows:

Thev .vedge is slidable with respect to the latch bolt 23 and under the impulses oli the spring 10 is shot or driven into the space between the flat surface of the latch bolt 23 and the flange 6 of the strike plate 4.

To -open'the door from the interior of the vehicle the inner handle 35 is turned thereby causing the cam 37 to partially rotate.
This operation of the cam 37 acts to force the pivoted` arm 40 rearwardly. The rearward movement of the arm 40 serves to retract the latch bolt 23 and the wedge 19 against theaction of the spring 10. With the turning of the handle 35 and the `retraction lof Vthe latch bolt and wedge the door is swung outi'vardly into open position with the fturned causing the lug 47 to engage in the notch 48 of the locking cam 49. The cam 49 vis thus moved upwardly from the position shown in Figure 5 into the locking position shown in Figure 6. The notch 54 of the cam 49 vpermits the cam to lockingly engage the corner 55 ofthe latch bolt 23. With the latch bolt 23 locked in position it will be noted lthat the handles 32 and 35 cannot be operated to retract the latch bolt. To permitretraction of the latch bolt and wedge, the key must be inserted into the pin lock 46 so that the lock barrel may be rotated yto move the locking cam 49 back into release position. When the lock 46 is locked, the door 1 may be locked from the interior of the vehicle by first disengaging the tenon 44 from the lock projection 45 and then turning the Ithumb turn- 41 whereby the lockingfcam 49 is moved into locking engagement with the shoulder or corner 55 of the latch bolt 23. The tenon 44 is then again engaged in the lock projection 45. 1t will thus be seen that all the doors of a closed vehicle vexcept one i may be locked from the inside of the vehicle by means 'of the thumb turns or handles 41, the last door permitting a person to leave the car to lock the last door by means of a key from the exterior ofl the vehicle. All
of the doors may be unlocked by keys from` the exterior *of the vehicle when the thumb turns interfit the lock projections 45 or by means of the thumb turns 41 from the in terior of the vehicle when said thumb turns are disengaged from the lock projections.`
In the modified form of door lock illustrated in Figures 12 to V16 inclusive, the operation `is similar to that already described. The latch bolt 66 and the wedge 62 are held in their projected positions by the respective E springs 71 and 59. The latch bolt and wedge may be retracted from the exterior of a ve hicle by actuating the roll back `74by the outer handle of the door. To retract the latch bolt 66 and the wedge 62 from the interior of the vehicle the lever 75 is swung rearwardly, therebyengaging the latch bolt lug 69-causingthe latch bolt and the wedge to slide inwardly against the action of the springs 59 and 72. Release of either of the -door handles permits the springs 59 and 72 to shoot the latch vbolt and wedge outwardly into their normal projected positions The latch bolt andthe wedge are mounted to permit the salme to move Atogether when the door is opened but differentially with respect to veach other when the door isclose'd so that the wedge follows and moves on the latch bolt to engage between said latch bolt and the flange 6'of the strike plate 4, to take up .any play, thereby preventing rattling of the d oor when `in'closed position. i
Attention is directed tothe novel means whereby 'the lever 78 may be removably mounted in position so that the length of` the lever extending above the top of the door maybe changed to suit the various y types of doors `used yon cars of different make. To mount the lever 75 the apertured end thereof is projected into rthe casing 63. The
portion 77 of the back plate 56 is then' sprung outwardly to permitthe pin 76 lto engage in any one of the lever apertures 79 in register with said pin when the plate portion 77 is released and bent back into `the `plane of the back plate 56. The lever 75 may be removed if not required.
The various parts of the door lock are mostly constructed by punching themout of sheet metal, thereby obviating most of the machining7 and the few parts made by die casting of course require but little if any machining.
Iam aware that numerous details of construction may be varied through al wide range without departing from the principles of this invention7 'and I' therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention: y
1. A door lock comprising a latch bolt, a wedge member,` an arm pivotally mounted on 'said wedge member and engaging said latch bolt, resilient means engaging said arm for irst impelling said latch bolt and then the wedge member outwardly into latching position, and handle mechanisms operable independently of each other for retracting the latch bolt and wedge member against the action of said resilient means.
2. A door lock comprising a latch bolt, a wedge member associated therewith, an arm pivoted on said wedge member and en` gaging said latch bolt, control means engaging said arm for impelling said latch bolt and then the wedge member outwardly into latching position, handles operable independently of each other for retracting the latch bolt and the wedge member 'against the action of said control means, and means tor locking the latch bolt and the wedge 'member against retraction by said handles.
Z3. A lock comprising a slidable latch, a wedge member slidably engaged therewith, an arm pivoted on said wedge member and contacting said latch, and a spring engaging said arm to move the latch and then the wedge member into latching position.
4l. A lock comprising a slidable latch, a wedge member slidably engaged therewith, an arm pivoted on said wedge member and contacting said latch, a spring engaging said pivoted arm 'for holding the latch and the wedge members in projected latchng position, means for retracting said latch and said wedge member against the action of said spring, and a locking mechanism adapted to be moved into engagement with said latch to hold the latch and the wedge member locked in their projected positions against retraction by said means.
5. In a door lock the combination with a latch, of a member integrally formed thereon, flanges on opposite ends of said member, a pivoted arm, a spring mechanism engaged with said pivoted arm to cause the same to press against one oi said flanges to hold the latch in projected latching position, a roll back engaged with the other flange of said member, and a handle connected with said roll back and adapted to be actuated to cause said roll back to retract the latch against the action of said spring mechanism.
6. A lock comprising a slidable latch, a wedge mechanism slidably engaged therewith, and resilient means associated with the wedge mechanism adapted to move the latch and then the wedge mechanism into latching position.
