.Application filed Enne t7, 3.3253. Serial No. @moet This invention relates to loclts tor doors and other closures of the type lrnovvn es case locks.
The object oi the invention is to provide a lock of this character having means :tor locking the spring projected latch Wherelay `the door is held `securely closed until the knol) is turned to release the latch and all possibility of rattling is prevented.
Another object is to provide e. lock the keeper of which is equipped with cam means for locking the latch ill-,closed position.
Wit-h 'the foregoing and other objects in vievv which will ep ear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the coin- 1 ination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that chan es in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within ithe scope oi what is claimed Without departing :from the spirit of the invention. in the accompanying drawings Figure l represents e side elevation of a portion ci e door with this improved lock shown applied, the traine of the door being shown in section and 'the keeper mounted in said frame being partly in elevation end partly in section; end
Fig. 2 represents a sectional vien7 teken on the line 2--2 of Fig. l.
ln the embodiment illustrated a door l of ordinary construction is shown in connection with its fram-e 2 the latter being equipped With e keeper 3 Jfor cooperation with the lock d carried by the door. This loci( fi has a spring projected latch 5 which is designed to loe retracted ley turning of the knob 6 and is also provided with 'the usual locking bolt 7 controlled by a key not shown. The frame 2 has a recess 8 'formed there in which' registers with an opening 9 in the keeper 3" when the latter is applied for reception of the lock holt 7 as is shown clearly in Fig. i. The keeper 3 which is in the 'form of a metal plate has a casting l() eX- tending laterally from its rear 'face and housed within the 'traine 2. This casting 10 has e recess l1 extending from end to end thereof end closed at one end `cy e det-echahle plete .1.6. 7The recess il is designed to receive the spring latch 5 when lthe door is closed land opening through the upper end lovver 'Walls of the recess are ohliquely extending soci-:ets 12 and 13 in which are mounted spriner projected balls which normally extend into the path et .the letch 5 and are supported by coiled springs 'iii which operate to normally project the balls in the path of the latch and which engage the opposed :faces ci the latch when the door is closed and lock it against opening until the latch is retracted hy tornino of the knob 6 which causes it to be witlidtevvn from between the halls against the tension of the springs l5.
To insert the balls and springs inthe casting 10 the plate 16 is removed and the halls entered in the 7bores l2 and 13 and then the springs 15 passed in etter them end which operate to project the `halls through the open ends of the hores 'which communicate with the recessll.
ln the use of this device the perte being mounted as shown in Fig. l, the closing of the ldoor 1 will cause the latch 5 to enter the recess ll in e direction longitudinally of the recess 'thereby forcing the halls A inwardly into their sockets against the tension of the springs l5 which permits the f latch to slide into said recess and immediately it passes into locking position the halls Will ce forced out by vthe springs i5 eii'ecting e cam like locking engegement with the latch 5 and thus sectirely holding the latch against outward movement through the recess 11. The latch 5 is retracted by the turning oi the knob 6 which pulls it out through the opening in the side Wall oi the casting 10 ceusing the spring pressed halls to roll in their sockets end sitter the letch passes out the halls ere returned ready ttor the next operation.
It Will thus he seen that the door is not only held locked hy the engagement with the halls to the latch but it holds the door securely against rattling.
Various changes in the form, shape, proportion and other minor detailsof construction may he made 'Without departing `.troni the principle or socrilicing an ot the advantages of the claimed invention.-
l. The combina-tion of s keeper and a lock, one having a. socket and the other a lil@ latch, said socket having a, bore extending oblquely therefrom and opening thereinto, and a spring proieeted ball mounted in said bore and adapted to engage the latch when. the door is closed to lock the latch in closed 'positionn 4 2 The combination of a keeper having a recess opening through the front Wall thereof and through. one side Wall, bores extendin oblique! from the upper and lower We le of sei opening and opening et one end through seid wells, spring projected balls mounted in said bores and adapted to extend into said opening, and a latch adapted to enter said opening between seid baile thereby looking it against opening in one direction. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afixed my signe ture in the presence of two witnessed JAMES II TAYLOR. Witnesses:
