Be it known that I, FORREST T. DURNER, a citizen of the United States, residing .at Evansville, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Latch, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improve, ments in latches, the primary object of the invention being the provision of a latch having two independently actuated spring projected locking bars, so positioned that the two may be retracted simultaneously, yet in-- dependently of each other, rendering the necessity of retracting both at the same time to unlock the latch, the particular latch being especially adapted for fastening cupboard doors, gates or doors to private oflices and the like.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
- In the drawings-Figure 1 is a sectional view through the casing of the latch showing the two locking members in looking position. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the locking member carrying casing.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the base which carries the casing 2, said casing 2 being provided with the oppositely disposed elongated slot 3 and with:
the rectangular slot 4, the purposes of which will presently appear.
Connected to the wall of the casing at the opposite end to the slot 4 are the two pins 5-5, which have disposed thereupon the respective springs 6-6.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a latch having two independently actuated and parallel locking:
These springs abut the rear ends respectively of the lockmg members 77, and normally hold the same in looking position, with the shouldered portions 88" abutting the stop pins 9-9"-, the shouldered portions 88 being disposed to engage pins 9-9 when the look ing members are retracted against the springs 66, and when the respective pins 5-5 are seated within the elongated sockets '1.0-10 of the locking members. Each locking memberis'provided with its respective handle 11 having the knob 12, each handle 11 being projected through its respective aperture 3 or 3. of the casing 2, said casing 2 being of sucha width as to permit of the engagement of the respective handles by the thumb and one finger of the same hand of an operator so that the locking members may be retracted simultaneously against the springs and to disengage the catch engaging ends 1313 from the casing 14; of the catch plate 15.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings it is evident that with a lock or latch constructed according to the present invention, that in order to release the latch so that the door controlled thereby may be opened, that both locking members must be retracted simultaneously so that the engaging ends 1313 are withdrawn within the casing 2 and against the tension of both springs 6-6. The manipulation of either one will not effect the disengagement of the latch, thus rendering the liability of tampering with the latch in releasing the same more difficult.
This form of latch is especially useful in connection with looks upon cupboards or small children, one of the locking members remaining in closed or looking position at all times and necessitating, as before set forth, the simultaneous operation of both of the independent members before the door can be opened.
The aperture 4, pins 55, and the pins 9, 9, 9 and 9 all co-act to provide guiding means for retaining the locking members in parallel and properly within the casing 2 and at the same time the four last mentioned pins provide means for limiting the retraction and projection of the locking members within the casing.
What is claimed is:
1. A latch, including a casing having oppositely disposed elongated apertures, two spring projected locking members mounted in the casing, and a handle for each member projecting exteriorly of the casing through the respective apertures thereof.
2. A latch, including a casing, two locking members mounted therein for independent movement, a spring to each member for holding the member projected, a handle for each member to manually retract the member, and two spaced pins within the casing and to each member, one upon each side of the handle, for limiting the movement of each locking member.
3. A latch, including a casingprovided with oppositely disposed elongated apertures, two locking members mounted within the casing for independent movement, a spring to each member for holding the member projected, a handle for each member projected through its respective elongated slot of the casing for manually retracting the members, and co-acting means carried by the locking members and the casing for limiting the respective movements of the members.
4. A latch, including a casing provided with oppositely disposed elongated apertures, two locking members mounted Within the casing for independent movement, a
spring to each member for holding the member projected, a handle for each member projected through its respective elongated slot of the casing for manually retracting its member, and two spaced pins to each member within the casing, one upon each side of the handle for limiting the movement of its member.-
5. A latch, including a casing provided with oppositely disposed elongated apertures, two longitudinally movable and parallel locking members mounted within the casing, the rear ends of said members being provided with sockets, a pin disposed within the casing and in alinement with each socket of the locking members, a spring upon each pin for normally projecting its respective locking member, a handle for each locking member projected through its respective elongated slot of the casing for manually retracting the locking member, and coacting means carried by the respective locking members and the casing for limiting the longitudinal movement of the locking members. 6. A latch, including a casing provided with oppositely disposed elongated apertures, two longitudinally movable and parallel locking members mounted within the casing, the rear ends of said members each being provided with a socket, a pin disposed within the casing and in alinement with each socket of the locking members, a spring upon each pin for normally projecting its respective locking member, a handle for each locking member projected through its respective elongated slot of the casing for manually retracting the locking member, and two pins to each locking member one upon each side of its respective handle for limiting the longitudinal movement of its locking member.
