v To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, CAsnUs ELwooD ACK- LEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trego, in the county of Washburn and State of /Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Locks; and I do hereby declare the followingto Abe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the Vart toV which it appertains to make and use the same. Y
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in door locks and means for operating the same, and my object is to provide a lock having a spring operated latch therein adapted to engage with a keeper for holding the door, or other object to which the lock is secured, in closed position.
A further object is to provide a sliding bar for disengaging the latch from the keeper when the door is to be opened.
A further object is to so construct the bar jlshalt it can be readily introduced into the A further object is to providey means for adjustably attaching one of the pull handles or knobs to the bar. And a further object is to provide means for holding the latch in fixed position when desired.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter set forth andV more particularly pointed out in the accompanying specification.
1n the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application, Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a door showing my improved lock attached thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view through the lock and door and the adjacent portion of the door jamb. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the door and lock and adjoining portion of the door jamb showing a locking attachment for the latch. ,Fig 4 is a detail perspective view of a door showing a modified form of means for operating the sliding bar for actuating the latch,'and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the head employed for attaching the modified form of operating device'shownin Fig. 4 to the sliding bar for actuating the latch.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates ay door which may be constructed in any preferred manner, 2 the door jamb and 3 indicates the lock casing, said casing `being preferably'mortised into the edge' of the door. Slidably mounted in the casing is a latch 4, the end face 5 of which is tapered so that when the door is being moved to closed position and the tapered face engages the edge of the keeper 6, the latch will .recede into the lock until the end of the latch is brought into engagement with the slot 7 in the keeper, when the latch will snap into the slot and hold the door in closed position until the latch is operated to disengage the same from the keeper.
rflhe latch is normally held in its extended position so that the end thereof will engage with its keeper at all times, by means of a spring 8, one end of which is-attached to the casing 3 in any suitable manner, while the opposite end thereof engages a notch 9 in one edge of the latch, the tension of the spring being such as to force the latch outwardly and return the same to its normally extended position after being retracted.
The inner end of the latch 4 is bifurcated to provide paralleling arms 10, between which extends a pull bar 11, said bar being preferably made flat and formed in two sections 12 and 13, one half of each. of the sections being considerably wider than the other half whereby shoulders 14 and 15 are provided adjacent the longitudinal centers of said sections, the narrow portion ofone section overlapping the wider portion of the other section so that when the two sections of the bar are properly engaged with the lock, said bar will be of uniform width throughout its length.
The shoulders 14 and 15 are inclined or disposed at an angle to the longitudinal trend of the latch 4 and said shoulders are spaced apart to form a channel 16 in which a pin 17, carried by the latch 4, is adapted to travel, and in view of the inclination or angle of the walls of the channel 16, the latch 4 will be retracted or moved into the casing 3, when the bar 11 is moved lengthfrom the opposite direction, said sections being secured together by means of knobs 18 and 19, said knobs having extensions 20 and 21 thereon for engagement with screws `22 and 23, the screws 22 extending through* narrow portion of the section 12. The section 13 Vis'also provided with a channel 25,
. which extends at right angles to the trend of the bar and in alinement with the pin 17, when the latch is in closed position, so that when the door is pushed to closed position,
' then pin 17 will run in the channel 25 when the latch is depressed by coming into engagement with the keeper 6.
Instead of providing the knobs 18 and 1,9,
rods 26 may be substituted therefor, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, one end of each rod being pivotally secured at one en d to a bracket 27, while the opposite end thereof'is pivotally secured to a head 28 attached to the bar 11, the -rods 26 extending transversely of the door and substantially the full width thereof, this form of device being particularlyV applicable for office buildings, stores, vand the like.
In Fig. 3 of the drawing I have shown a locking means for the latch 4:, which comprises a pawl 29, which is pivotallymounted in the casing 3 below the latch, one end of the pawl being adapted to engage a shoulder 30 in the edge of the latch to hold the latch against longitudinal movement inwardly until the end of the pawl is disengaged therefrom, theA engaging end of the pawl being held in either locking position to snap into engagementv with the shoulder 30 or'held out of Vvlocking position with respect to the shoulder 30, by means of a spring 31 having one end suitably 'secured to the bottom wall of the lock casing 3 and its free end engaging the notch 31 formed in theV under side of the'pawl 29, and in a manner that when the pawl 29 is swung yinto locking position" the notch 31 is positioned at one side yof theV plane of the pivotal point of the pawl 29'and the fixed base of the spring 31 so that the pawl 29 is retained in locking position bylthe spring 31, but when the pawl 29 is swung out of locking position the notch 31 is 'positioned at`the opposite side of the plane of the pivotal pointy of the pawl 29 and the fixed base of the spring 31 so that the pawl`29 is also retained out vof locking position by the spring 31. The opposite end of the 'pawl 29 is provided with arms 32 with ,which V is adapted to engage any suitable form of key '(not shown) for swinging the pawll outiof locking engagement with 'the latch, andby providing this form; of de'- In operation, when it is desired to openthe door, should the person be'within the building, pressure is applied to the knob 18 which vwill move the 'bar 11 lengthwise through the lock, 'the tapered Aface ofthe i channel 16 causing the pin 17 to move the" latch inwardlyuntil it is disengaged from its keeper, a continued push upon the knob forcing the door to'o'pen position. latch will be permitted to travel inwardly without disturbing the position vof the bar 11.' When thatform of device shown in Fig. 3 is employed, it will be necessary toemploy a key for releasing Athe pawl from the latch before the rod 11 can be operated to release the latch'rfrom itskeeperY when the pawl is in locking position, but when the pawl is'in vinoperativeV or inactive position there is no need for the employment ofthekey. y I v In view of the simplicity of this device it can be very cheaplyv constructedi'and readily applied to use,l and inmany instances the latch can be more'readilyreleased from its Y keeper than where afturn is to be given to the knob in order to retract theVV latch, y'twoV distinct movements being requiredto open a doorhaving a lock ofthe ordinary construction while but one movement is`required in the present instance, the same movement remployed Aforv operating the bar being continued to move the door to open position.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
l. In a lock structure, the combination with a casing, a latch slidably mounted in the casing', and a pin carried by the latch, of a bar formed in two sections, said sections adjacent their longitudinal centers having inclined shoulders spaced apart to form a channel, said channel being adapted to receive said pin, one of said sections having a channel extending in line with the travel of the latch into which said pin may move, and means engaging the ends of the bar whereby said bar may be operated.
2. In a lock structure, the combination with a casing, a latch slidably mounted therein, and a pin carried by the latch, of a bar disposed transversely through the cas ing, said bar having an inclined slot therein adapted to receive said pin whereby when the bar is moved endwise in one direction the latch will be retracted, said bar also having a channel in line with the travel of said latch into which said pin may move, a spring actuated pawl adapted to engage said latch and normally hold the same against endwise movement, a handle structure rigidly attached to one end of said bar and a handle structure adj ustably attached to the opposite end of said bar, whereby the longitudinal movement of said bar may be regulated.
