Be it known that I, AUGUST BoUoHERY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, in the county of IKingS, city and State of invented new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a speciiica- Y tion.

Vrlhis invention relates to locks in which aV keeperlixed to a door frame or door is provided with a perforated ear or ears adapted to engage in recesses in one end of al lock casing fixed to a door or door frame, and with which perforated ears tongues connected to a bolt mounted in the casing to have sliding movement in a direction longitudinal of the keeper are adapted to coperate, the said bolt being operable byV ahand ob and also by a key, and itis the object of the invention to improve the general construction of locks of this character and to' provide improved means to actuate the bolt, and to simplify andl cheapen the construction of such locks and at the same time increase the efficiency thereof.

To impart movement to the bolt to throw the bolt tongues into and out of engagement with the perforations of the keeper ears there is provided a cam member 20 fixed to a pintle 21 rotatably mounted in the lock casing to engage between the projections 16 of the bolt. In Fig. 1 said cam is shown as engaging with vand in position to maintain the'bolt tongues out of thejperforations in the vkeeper ears, the cam-being retained in such position by a spring 22 fixed at one end to a pin 23 with the free endengaging 'with in front of stop to prevent the cam from being thrown back too far andA out of operative engagement with the upper bolt projections 16. The cam is actuated by a handknob 24 which is preferably located on the inside vof the door, and to lcause the bolt tongues to engage lin the ear perforations the knob 24 is rotated to move the cam in the direction vshown by the arrow inFig. 1 causing the cam toenbeing circular Y gage with the lower projection 16, the pins 25 during this movement tensioning and throwing the springv outward. When the .cam is moved to a position .directlyfopposite to that shown in Fig. 1 it will engage with the lower projection 16 and` maintain the bolt in such position with the bolt tongues in the ear perforations, and the cam retained in such position by the spring 20 engaging with the pins 25, a stop pin 26 preventingthe cam from being thrown out of operative engagement with the lower projection 16. rlhe lock is preferably operable from the outer side of the door by a key, and for this purpose there is provided ordinary key operated mechanism comprising a tumbler carrying barrel 27 in which is rotatably mounted a barrel 28 having a slot for a key 29, and having openings 2l for the engage-V ment of the tumblers'to prevent the rotation thereof, the said Ytumblers being adapted to be thrown out of said openings to permit rotation of the barrel by the key, the barrel 28 having-"means fixed thereto, as shown at 30, to connect it to the cam whereby as said barrel is rotated the key such movementV will be transmitted to the cam to throw the bolt to either looking or unlocking position.

Having thus described my invention l claim: Y

1. ln a lock, the combination with a keeper having a perforated ear, of a lock casing having a recess in one end in which the keeper ear is adapted to engage; a bolt having a tongue extending parallel with the bolt located in the recessed portion of the lock Vcasing to engage in the ear perforation when inlocking position, and having a pair of lateral extensions whereby the bolt is mounted inthe casing to have to and fro slidingV movement in line with the ear perforation and prevent said bolt from having rotative and lateral movement; and an operating member rotatable inthe casing to engage between said extensions and cooperating with one of said extensions to throw the bolt into Y in the ear and maintain it therein, and to coperate with the other extension to throw the bolt out of the ear perforation and maintain it in such position.

2. In a lock, the combination with'a keeper having perforated ears, of a lock casing having recesses in one end in which the keeper ears are adapted to engage;. a bolt having a pair of lateral extensionsl and tongues extending pa rllel with the bolt, said tongues being located in the recessed portion of the casing and adapted to engage in the ear perforations, and a pair of rods in the casingupon which the bolt extensions are slidably mounted to permit movement of Y the bolt longitudinally of the keeper and prevent the bolt fromV having lateral and rotative movement, substantially as and for the purpose specified. Y

3.' In a lock, the combination with a keeper having perforated ears, of a lock casing having aconvexedly formed portion at one end with recesses therein and in which recesses the keeper ears are adapted to engage;

4. In a lock, the combination with a keeper having perforated ears, of a casing having a convexedly formed portion at one end with recesses therein in which the keeper ears are adapted to engage; a'bolt having a pair of lateral extensions and tongues on the side opposite from said extensions extending parallel with the bolt located in the convexedly formed portion, of the casing and adapted to engage in the ear perforations of the keeper; guides in the casing upon which the lateral extensions of the bolt are slidably mounted to permit movement of the bolt in a directionlongitudinally of the keeper and prevent saidbolt from having lateral and rotative movement; rotatable means in the casing operable from the exterior thereof to cooperate with said lateral extensions of the bolt toV cause the bolt tongues' to engage in the ear perforations of the keeper and maintain them therein, and to throw said tongues out of said ear perforations and a spring to coperate with said rotatable means to maintain said means bolt engaging in or thrown out of engagement with the ear perforations, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

5. In a lock, the combination with a keeper having perforated ears, of a lock casing having recesses formed in one end in which the keeper earsy are adapted to engage; a bolt having a pair of lateral extensions and a pair of tongues extending parallel with the bolt on the side opposite to the extensions, said tongues being'located in the recessed portion of the casing and adapted to engage in the ear perforations of the keeper; a pair of rods in the casing upon which the lateral extensions of the bolt 'are slidably mounted to permit said bolt to have movement longitudinally of the keeper only; and a cam rotatably mounted in the casing between said lateral extensions of the bolt operable from the exterior of the casing and adapted to Ycoperate with one of said bolt extensions to throw the bolt tongues into and maintain them in theY ear' perforations of the keeper,

6.
