ANGELO RUSSO, OF BURLINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
LOCK.
Application filed June 4,
The present invention relates to looks and has for its object to provide a lock which is reliable in act-ion and not easily tampered with by unauthorized persons, and which is simple in construction, and readily operated under intensive conditions.
Another very important object of the invention is the provision of a lock which affords protection against the opening of a door even though a person has a key to the lock.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a novel combined night latch and cylinder lock wherein a novel connecl5 tion is provided between the two.
Nith the above and numerous other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 shows a fragmentary sectional view of a portion of a door with my improved lock mechanism attached thereto,
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the door showing the outer portion of the cylinder lock,
Fig. 3 is an elevation of the latch structure 4 is an elevation thereof with the 30 closure plate removed,
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken transversely through the latch casing substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3,
Fig. 6 is a transverse section substantially 35 on the line 6-6 of Fig. 4,
Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken substantially on the line 77 of Fig. 1, Fig. 8 is an end elevation of the roll-back stem,
Fig. 9 is an end elevation of the key operated member for operating the roll-back stem. Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that 10 represents a door and 11 the door jamb, said door being provided with a suitable opening 12 for the accommodation of a tumbler barrel or cylinder 13 which may be of any suitable construction and which may contain tumbler mechanism of any known type. The cylinder 13 is secured in opposite positions in any convenient way as for instance by means of screws 14 cooperating with plate 15.
The numeral 16 denotes the rotatable member in the barrel 13 which is key operated, said key being indicated by the 1926. Serial No. 113,720.
The latch structure is housed in a casing 33 of any preferred construction, including a closure plate 34 which is held in engagement with the casing 33 by a screw 35 and engaging in the lug 36 formed interiorly of the casing. A latch 37 is movable through an opening 38 in one end wall of the casing 33 and is formed integrally on a shank 39. A rack frame is formed integrally on the shank 39 at the other end thereof, and one side is provided with interior rack teeth 41. The rack frame 40 is movable between lugs 42 formed in the casing. The forward movement of the rack frame is limited by a stop pin 43 formed in the casing, and obviously this pin also limits the forward movement of the shank 39 and the latch 37.
From the description as it has thus far progressed, it will be readily apparent that by inserting a key in the rotatable portion 16 of the cylinder lock 13, that the plate 20 may be pushed inwardly to engage the stem 22 thereof in the groove 31 of the head 25 of the roll-back stem 26, so that when the key is turned, said roll-back stem 26 is turned for rotating the roll-back shaft 48 and the gear 49 for moving the rack 40, the
In order to unlock the door from the inside thereof, I provide a shaft 51 rotatable in the casing and having a knob 52 on its exterior end and a crank 53 on its interior end. Said crank 53 is engageable with the forward edge of the rack frame 40 so as to push the same against the tension of the spring 45 and move the latch into an un locked position. This crank may be operated to such an extent that it will extend longitudinally of the casing in one direction for holding the latch unlocked while it may be rotated to extend in the opposite direction toward the latch 37 to engage the inner end thereof as is clearly shown in Fig. 1, for preventing the latch. from being opened. Vhen the crank is in this position as described, it will be seen that said latch canmerely by way. of example, since in actual practice, it affords the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invent-ion and the above description. Various changes in the specific formshown and described may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spiritof my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1- In combination with a cylinder lock;
wherein the lock is provided with a key operated rotatable part a cylindrical exten-' sion extending from the lock, a plate having pins projecting therefrom into recesses provided in said rotatable part. and provided with a stem, a roll back stem having a head rotatable in the cylindrical extension, means for holding the head in the cylindrical extension, said head being provided with a slot for receiving the stem of the plate, and a spring in the cylindrical extension impinged against the plate and against the head.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ANGELO RUSSO.
