LOCK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TEHODORE OZOROZY, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at North Braddock, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to looks, and the primary object of my invention is, to provide a lock that cannot be tampered with or disassembled, without entirely removing the look from the door.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive lock consisting of comparatively few parts that are advantageously arranged to produce a lock movementthat will be positive in operation, and easily actuated.
With the above and other objects in view, which will more readily appear as the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be presently described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of my lock, artly broken away and artly in section, il ustrating the locking bo t and latch thereof in an extended or locked osition. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the atch and bolt thereof in a retracted or unlocked position. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the lock casing. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the latch guide. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the latch actuator. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the latch guide. Fig. 7 is a similar view of the latch. Fi 8 is a front elevation of a locking bolt. To put my invention into practice, I provide a lock casing adapted to be set in a door and suitably secured therein. The lock casing comprises a skeleton frame 1, having pierced lugs 2 to receive screws or similar fastening means employed for retaining side plates 3 and 4 in engagement with the frame 1. The frame 1 is secured by screws 5 to two door plates 6 and 7, and these door plates are secured to a door by screws 8.

In the top part of the lock casing is located a latch 9, said latch being designed to move back and forth in openings 10 provided therefor in the door plates 6 and 7. The latch 9 is moved by the shank of a door knob (not shown), this shank within the casing being provided with an actuator 11 adapted to engage the angular end 12 of said latch and move the same rearwardly. The actuator 11 is normally held in a vertical position by a s iral spring 13 secured to a post 14, carrie by the plate 3.
The latch 9 is normally held in an extended or locked position by a s iral spring 15 secured to a post 16 carrie by the plate 3. The latch 9 is supported by a latch guide 17 mounted upon the plate 3 by pins 18 extending into openings 19 provided therefor in said plate. The latch guide 17 is grooved, as at 20 to receive the recessed portion 21 of said latch, this recess portion limiting the movement of said latch.
In the lower part of the lock casing is located a lock bolt and tumblers of a novel construction, said lock bolt and tumblers constituting the principal part of my invention. The lock bolt comprises a plate 22 having a double locking head 23, this head being adapted to move back and forth in openings 24 provided therefor in the door plates 6 and 7. The plate 22 of the bolt is approximately one-third the thickness of the double locking head 23, to accommodate two sets of tumblers, each set com rising three spring pressed tumblers, as wi l presently appear.
To support and guide the locking bolt, the plates 3 and 4 of the lock casing are provided with longitudinal oppositely disposed slots 25 and with a transverse guide 26. The plate 22 is provided with a slot 27 to receive the guide 26, and with oppositely disposed pins 28 having contracted ends 29 adapted to fit in the slots 25 of the lock casing.
Mounted upon the sides of a plate 22 are spring pressed tumblers 30, 31, and 32, these tumblers being provided with vertical registering openings 33 for the guide 26, and with notched oblong openings 34. for the pins 28 of the plate 22. The guide 26 and the pins 28 are adapted to support said tumblers, and these tumblers are normally depressed upon said guide and said pins by springs 35, carried by a bar 36 arranged between the plates 3 and 4. A spring is provided for each tumbler and each spring is adapted to engage in l a slot 37 provided therefor in each tumbler.
The plate 22 of the lock bolt has its lower edge notched, as at 38 to be moved by a key 39, inserted ineither one of the key holes 40, formed in the plates 3 and 4. The ward of the key 39 is formed with a longitudinal groove 41 to clear the projections 42 of the key holes, and with oppositely dis osed slots 43 to clear the wards or semi-circu ar projections 44 of the plates 3 and 4. The ward of a key is formed with slots 45 for the lower edges of the tumblers 30 and with cut away portions 46 for the lower edges of the tumblers 32, both sets of tumblers being simultaneously elevated while the central-portion 47 of the ward engages in the notched lower edge of the plate 22 for moving the looking bolt, When the key is rotated.
Since the tumblers are prevented from lateral movement by the guide 26, it is evident that the tumblers must be moved vertically to move the locking bolt, since the pins 28 engage in the notches of the oblong opening 34 of a plate 22.
In operation, the key 39 first elevates the tumblers 30, 31 and 32 upon both sides of the plate 22. The plate 22 is then engaged by a central portion 47 of the key and is moved either from a retracted position to an extended position or vice versa. In an extended position or in a retracted position, the locking bolt is locked by the pins 28 en aging in the notched openings 34 of the tum blers, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawmgs.
An important characteristic of my invention resides in the use of two sets of tumblers, and it will be observed that it is impossible to move the locking bolt without moving both sets of tumblers. It is therefore apparent that if the lock were tampered with, one of the lates 3 or 4 removed,'that easy access could e had to one set of tumblers, but it would be impossible to reach-the other of said tumblers, without taking the entire lock to pieces.
It is thought that my invention will be fully understood from the foregoing description and I reserve the right to make such changes in the size, proportion and minor details in the construction as are permissible by the appended claims.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is
l. A look comprising a casing, said casing having slots formed therein, a double headed locking bolt arranged to move in said casing, a guide arranged within said casing for su porting the inner ends of said locking bo t, oppositely disposed pins carried by said bolt and extending into the slots of said casing, a plurality of tumblers arranged upon each side of said locking bolt, said tumblers hav ing openings formed therein for said guide, said tumblers having oblong notched openings for the pins of said bolt, springs arranged in said casing for normally holding said tumblers in engagement with said guide and said pins, and a key adapted to be inserted in said casing for simultaneously raising said tumblers and moving said bolt, substantially as described.
2. A lock comprising a casing, said casing having slots formed therein, a movable double head locking bolt arranged in said casin pins carried by the sides of said locking boI and adapted to engage in said slots, s ring pressed tumblers arranged at the sides or said locking bolt, said tumblers having notched openings formed therein for engaging the pins of said bolt, and a key adapted to be inserted in said casing for elevating said tumbler and moving said bolt.
3. A look comprising a casing, a locking bolt arranged in said casing, pins carried by the side thereof and adapted to movably support said bolt, tumblers arranged at the sides of said bolt for engaging said pins, and a key adapted to be inserted in said casing for moving said tumblers and said bolt.
