Description

STANLEY MIHEL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
LOGK.
Application filed November 24., 1915.
I subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary,
residing at 1913Fisk street, in Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Lock, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in looks, and more particularly to that class of locks used in the doors of residences or other buildings and has for its object to provide a lock of the class mentioned in which the latch-bolt is held in positive locked position by the action of a sliding lock-bolt.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and c0mbination of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, ref erence will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which;
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved lock showing all of the parts thereof in locked position. The top plate being completely removed for purpose of illustration. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the several parts of the lock in the relative positions they assume as the door is being opened. Fig. 3 is an end view of the lock. Fig. 1 is a section on line 4:4: of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, my invention finds embodiment in a casing 5 provided with screw threaded apertures 6 to accommodate screws for attaching the top plate 7 thereto. Slidably mounted within the casing 5 is a latch-bolt 8 provided with the enlarged and beveled head 9, adapted to project into the keeper when the door is in closed position. The forked-end 10 of the latch-bolt 8 embraces the hub 11 of the rocker 12 which is actuated by means of the knob spindle 13 passing through same; the forked terminals being cast with perpendicular lugs 14 for operative engagement with the rocker 12, as shown in Figs. 1 and- 2. A retaining lug 8 is also provided which cooperates with the arm 15 of the thumb-latch 16 for positively locking the latch-bolt 8. A spring 17, normally maintaining the head 9 projected outside of easing 5. A tooth-rack 8 on the upper Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented ltlay 32', 19146.
Serial No. 63,297.
edge of latch-bolt 8 cooperates with the arcpinion 20 for positively retaining the up per loclcbolt 18 in locked position against key operation, as will be hereafter eX plained. A pair of lock-bolts, upper 18 and lower l9, are also slidably mounted within caslng 5, both being provided with enlarged heads respectively 18 and 19 and key operating ends respectively 18 and 19 Both ends 18 and 19 are provided with studs, respectively, 18 and 19 which extend into the tumbler openings 21 and 22 A plurality of upper tumblers 21, which operate independently according to the wards in the key-bit are pivoted onpin 23. A flat spring 24, retained at 6 tends to keep the tumbler ends normally resting on top of the bolt lug 18 Likewise, the spring 25, retained at 6 normally tends to keep the lower set of tumblers 22 resting on top of stub 19 the tumblers 22 being pivoted on pin 26. The cooperation of the shoulders, 21 and 22 with their studs 18 and 19 respectively, is well understood in the art. Mounted on pin 23 is an arc-pinion 27 which cooperates with the tooth-rack 18 of the upper lockbolt 18 to engage its enlarged tooth 27 with the enlarged tooth 20 of the arc-pinion 20 for positively locking the upper lock bolt with the latch-bolt against key operation through keyhole 28.
Among the distinctive features in the operation of this lock are: 1. Two lock-bolts operated by two difierent keys, one of said lock-bolts affecting the latch-bolt, through the medium of a pair of arc-pinions, to positively retain the latch-bolt in locked position. 2. An inside thumb latch cooperating with the latch-bolt for positively retaining the latch-bolt in locked position against key or door-knob manipulation.
It is thought the foregoing description and illustration sufliciently explain the construction of operation of this invention, hence a more extended explanation is omitted.
I claim:
1. In a lock of the character described, a casing, a slidable lock-bolt having a toothrack, a pinion having a large tooth, and a plurality of small teeth which mesh with said lock-bolt rack, a knob spindle, a latch bolt having a tooth-rack, a second pinion having a large tooth, and a plurality of small teeth which mesh with said latchbolt rack, said pinions spaced to engage with said large teeth and thereby positively retain said latch-bolt and knob spindle in locked position.
2. In a lock of the character described, a casing, a slidable lock-bolt having a tooth rack thereon, a pivoted arc-pinion having one largetooth and a plurality of smaller teeth which cooperate with said latch-bolt rack, a door-knob rod passing through said casing, a'rocker rigidly connected to said 7 bar, a latch-bolt having a tooth-rack thereon,
a second pinion having one large tooth and a plurality of smaller teeth which cooperate 06pm of this p a'tent m'ay be' obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
