` State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Door-Lock, of Which the following is a specification.
r`his invention is a door lock for general use7 and among the objects sought to be attained are, first, to afford security by the employment of certain bolts adapted for engagement with keepers positioned at the top rail and at the floor sill in addition to the ordinary keeper on the side of the door jamb; second, to so combine a spindle-controlled vmeans with a key-operated means that said spindle or the key-operated means may be used independently of each other or conjointly with each other; third, that the lock bolt may be operated independently of the top bolt and thebottombolt; and, fourth, that the lock bolt may be retained in the projected or shut position independently of the operation either of the spindle-controlled means or the key-operated means.
The invention, in one aspect thereof, embodies a bolt slidable within'a suitable casing, and a spindle coperating with said bolt for imparting the sliding movement thereto, combined with one or more other bolts positioned at the top or bottom (or both) of the door, rods connected with said top and bottom bolts and extending inwardly of the lock casing, and an operating gear carried by the knob spindle and positioned for engagement with racks provided on the look bolt and on the connecting rods, whereby the rotation of said gear operates to impart movement simultaneously to the lock bolt and to the additional bolts in order to project said bolts or to retract the same according to the direction of rotation ofthe spindle and said gear.
Cooperating with the lock bolt are a plurality of separate dogs each adapted to retain said bolt in a projected position, thus precluding the spindle and the gear from actuating the bolt or bolts. It is preferred to employ two of said dogs, one of which is controllable by key-actuated means,

whereas the other is operated by an independent member operable at will from the inside of the. door.
rllhe key-actuated means is in effect a cylinder lock equipped with a polygonal stud positioned for interlocking connection with an actuator which cooperates directly with one of said dogs. Said actuator is mounted for rotative movement within the lock-casing and is positioned for contact with said dog in a manner to retain the dog either in Contact with a shoulder of the lock bolt or to retract the dog from the path of the shoulder in order to free the lock bolt from the restraint of the dog.
The other dog referred to (dog J) is under the control of a separate rotatable actuator provided with a hand-operated member accessible from the inside of the door so as to be shifted at will, thus locking the bolt against movement independently of the knob spindle or the key-actuated means.
Provision is made for the operation of the lock bolt independently of the top bolt and bottombolt. The gear is mounted for sliding movement on an angular part of the knob spindle, and cooperating with said gear is a spring and a shifter which position the gear so that it meshes with all the racks in order to operate the lock bolt, the top bolt and the bottom bolt simultaneously. rllhe shifter is free to be operated by hand in order to slide the gear along the knob spindle against the tension of the spring, whereby the gear is free from mesh with the racks on the rods associated with the top and bottom bolts but said gear remains in mesh with the rack on the lock bolt, thus operating the lock bolt without operating the top and bottom bolts. But by adjust ment of the shifter, the spring retains the gear into mesh with the racks of all the bolts, so as to operate the latter simulta neously when desired.

The rotatable member M is provided with a sleeve nA having a square or polygonal opening into which iits the squared part of a spindle n forming an `extension of the tumbler barrel N, the latter being associated with the pin bolt mechanism incased within a cylinder lock N. This cylinder lock is key-controlled, and when the pro-per key is inserted the pins are retracted in order that the barrel N and the spindle n may be rotated for the purpose of imparting rotative movement to the member M, whereby the key-operated lock may be manipulated and rotated for the purpose of turning the .member M so as to either retract the dog K or to allow the dog to be projected into locking engagement with the bolt B.
As heretofore described, the knob spindle and the gear are operated to impart movement simultaneously to the bolt B and the members F, G which control the top and bottom bolts of the door lock, but under'some circumstances it may be considered inadvisable to actuate the top and bottom bolts and the slidable members F, G. Accordingly, pro- `vision is made for shifting the operating gear D so that the teeth thereof will be free from engagement with the racks i of the sliding members F, G, but at this time the operating gear remains in mesh with the rack e of the double bolt, whereby the rotation of the knob spindle will actuate the double bolt only, the sliding members F, G and their corresponding bolts being idle. Various means may be employed for imparting this adjustment to the gear D, but in the embodiment shown I employ a shifter O, the same being in the form of a pivoted plate positioned within a suitable recess of the lock casing, so that the plate will have engagement with the gear D. In a preferred form the pivoted shifter O is forked toward one end vin. order that it may partly it around the knob spindle, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The shifter' is positioned for engagement with one side or face of the gear D, whereas the spring cZ engages withthe other face of said gear. The shifter is operated by a device positioned for access on the outside of the lock casing. As shown, this device is a screw P having an exposed operating head 10, see Fig. 6. The screw is normally retracted from engagement with the shifter O so that the spring d will press the gear D into position for engagement with ythe racks e, z' of the bolt B and the 'members F, G, respectively. It is apparentv that thescrew P`may be turned for the purpose of moving the shifter inwardly to the position of Fig. 6, whereupon the shifter moves the gearv D along the knob spindle so that the gear is free from engagement with the sliding members F, G, but remains in engagement with the rack e of the double bolt B.
It is thought that the operation and advantages of this invention will be apparent from the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a lock, the combination with a lock bolt, and a knob spindle, of an additional bolt, a gear for operating the lock bolt and the additional bolt simultaneously, a dog .cooperating with the lock bolt, and means for shifting the gear in a direction to free it from the additional boltwhile retaining said gear in operative relation to the lock bolt.
2. In a lock, the combination with a lock bolt, and a knob spindle, of an additional bolt, a slidable on the knob spindle and adapted to impart movement to the lock bolt and the additional bolt simultaneously, means for shiftingv said gear so as to free it from the additional bolt while retaining it in mesh wit-h the lock bolt whereby the gear imparts movement to the lock bolt to the eX- clusion of the additional bolt, and a dog cooperating' with the lock bolt.
3. In a lock, the combination with a lock bolt, and a knob-spindle, of a plurality of additional bolts, a gear on the spindle for operating the lock bolt and said additional bolts simultaneously, means for shifting said gear so as to operate the lock bolt to the exclusion of the additional bolts, and a dog coperating with the lock bolt, said dog being operable at will to shift it with respect to the lock bolt.
