In the door lock disclosed in my copending` application above referred to., a latch bolt is disclosed which is adapted. to assume two positions: rst, a normal half-proiected position; and secondly a fully projected position. The latch bolt is attached to a retractor plate'x and this is actuated by rollback members formed on an inner and. an outer spindle. Within these spindles is mounted an actuator' which controls the positionv of the latch bolt, and also a clogging member whereby the outer spindle is dogged against rotation when the latch bolt is fully projected. This actuator is controlled by a key mechanism disposed in the outer spindle, and said mechanismI is rotatable.- It is also controlled by a longitudinally movable memberr manually operated by a pushbutton mounted inthe inner spindle.
The object of the present invention is` to provide a doorlock having a latch bolt which is adapted to assume two positions, rst a normal half-projected position,l and second a fully projected position; to provide a door lock in which the latch bolt is attached to a retractor plate, which in this instance is' actuated by' a rollback member formed on a single spindle; torv provide an actuator Within the spindle which controls the position of the latch bolt; to provide key-.actud ated means in the outer end of the single spindle for rotating said member, and manually operated means in the inner end of the spindle `which is' y also rotatable to control the position of. the actuator; to provide means on the latch bolt for dogging the single spindle against rotation when the latch bolt assumes its fully projected position; to provide means whereby the key actuated means or the manually actuated member in the inner end of the spindle will undog the spindle and restore the latch bolt to its normal projected position; to provide a latch bolt which when fully extended cannot be depressed by' engagement i spindle-and` the knobs. secured thereto undogged position;

Referring to the drawings, and particularly to Figs. 1 to 3, A indicates a portionA of a door, to which is suitably secured a lock housing consisting of two side plates 2 and 3` which are joined at.y their outer ends by a face plate 4. Secured between the plates 2 and 3 of the lock housing is a U-shaped frame consistingr of upper and lower horizontally extending arms 5 and 6 which are connected at their rear ends to an end member l. The forward ends are provided with rightangularly bent lugs 8 8, and they are secured to the face plate 4 by rivets, countersunk screws or the like, such as indicated at 9. The latch bolt proper is indicated at Ill. It extends through an opening l I formed in the face plate, and is guided thereby. The latch bolt is secured to a retractor plate generally indicated at B (see Figs.
1, 2 and 4),. The plate is rectangular in shape, and has an elongated opening I2 formed therein, through which a spindle hereinafter to be referred to extends. The plate is provided with two guide lugs |3-I3 which extend into slots lli- I4 formed in the horizontal arms 5 and 6 of the U-shaped frame. These lugs guide the rear end of the retractor plate, while the latch bolt l0 guides the forward end. The retractor plate is otherwise provided with a head member I5, on which is formed a dog i6. This head is cut away or notched as at i8, and it is provided with two shoulders i 9--l 9, the purpose of which will hereinafter be described.
An auxiliary plate is also employed, and this is generally indicated at C (see Figs. 1, 2 and 5). It is rectangular in shape, and is also provided with lugs such as shown at I3@ which guide it in the slots I4. The plate C' is further provided with a central opening such as indicated at |23,
and it has a notch and a pair of shoulders |512 hereinafter to be referred to.
Formed on the side plates 2 and 3 of the main lock housing are outwardly extending bearing hubs 23 and 2|, in which is journaled a spina dle generally indicated at D. This spindle is best shown in Figs. 1 and 6. A central portion, indicated at 23, is enlarged in diameter, while the inner and outer ends are reduced in diameter as shown at 24. The central enlarged portion is cross-slotted as shown at 25, and a roll-- back member 2B is thus formed. The opposite sides of the cross-slot are notched on opposite sides, as shown at 21, and one or the other of these notches is provided for the reception of the dogging member I6. Inasmuch as there is only one dog IB lformed on the retractor plate B, only one of the notches 21 would be required, but two are preferably employed, as this allows for both right-hand and left-hand installations.
A pair of knobs 30 and 3| are secured onithe opposite ends of the spindle. The knob" 30 will hereinafter be referred to as the outer knob', and the knob 3| as the inner' knob. Insertable through the inner knob and the spindle'is a bar 32, which is circular inl cross section and snugly fits lthe interior oi Ythel spindle, which is tubular. A collar 33 is formed on theouter end of said bar, and engages the end of the spindle. This collar is overlaid by an annular shoulder 34 formed on the knob, and the bar is thus secured against endwise movement within the spindle, but it is free to rotate, and me'ans in the form of a turnpiece 35 is formed onthe outer end of the bar and projects beyondl the face of the knob 3| to permit it to be grasped so as to rotate the bar 32. The bar 32 is best shown in Figs. 1 and 1. Adjacent its inner end is formed a flat portion 36 which will hereinafter be referred to as an actuator. Beyond that is a cylindrical extension 31, and on the end thereof is formed a lug 38. Y
Extending through the outer knob 30 and into the tubular spindle is a key-actuated tumbler cylinder 39. The spindle proper functions as a housing for the cylinder, and the tumblers 40 normally project into a slot 4| formed in the spindle, and thus secure the cylinder against rotation. However, by inserting a key the tumblers lill are retracted, and the cylinder is then free to rotate; when it is rotated, a lug 112 formed on the inner end thereof engages the lug 33 of the actuator, and rotation is thereby imparted to the actuator by the key-actuated cylinder. The keycylinder has a collar 4.5 formed at its outer end, and this is overlaid by lan annular shoulder 46 formed on the knob. The key cylinder is thus secured against endwise movement, but it is free to rotate a half revolution within the spindle, as will hereinafter be described.
The normal position of the mechanism is that shown in Fig. 1. In this position the latch bolt l()v is half-projected, and it is maintained in this position by means of the actuator, or in other words the flattened bar 35. This bar when in t horizontal position, as shown in Figs. l and 2', engages the inner end of the notch i3 formed in the retractor plate, and this holds the retractor plate, together with the latch bolt secured thereto, in a partially retracted position, where the dog i6 is maintained out of engagement with the notch 21 formed in the spindle, and the shoulders |9 out of engagement with the rollback-member 26. In this position the spindle is undogged and may be rotated byeither 75 knob, and when it is rotated by either knob the rollback member 26 (see Fig. 2) will engage one or another of the shoulders |51) of the auxiliary plate C and force it ina rearward direction, and when said shoulders align with the shoulders I9 formed on the main retractor plate, both the retractor plate and the auxiliary plate will move rearwardly in unison, and the latch bolt ID will be fully retracted. Conversely, by releasing the spindle, by letting go of whichever knob has been grasped, the springs indicated at 50 and 5| will return both plates to normal position and thereby reversethe rotation of the spindle and the knobs, and the bolt will be returned to normal or' halfpro'jected position, as forward movement of the retractor plate will be limited by the horizontal position of the bar or actuator 3S.

Theseopenings are. provided merely to permit the spindle to pass through the plates and to permit retraction of the plates. The auxiliary plate C performs only one function, and if' it were not for that function it could be en tirely discarded. That function is to hold the spindle and knobs against free rotation. That is, the normal position assumed by the retractor plate is that shown in Figs. l and 2; in this posii tion it will be noted ythat the shoulders' I9--|9 of the retractor plate assume the dotted line positionshown in Fig. 2. In other words, they are spaced avi/ayA from and out of engagement with the rollback member 2li.` If it were not for the auxiliary plate, the spindle and the knobs would be free toA rotate without any resistance until the rollback member engagedv the shoulders lil-i9. Such free rotation Would obviously be undesirable. It is for this reason that the auxiliary plate is employed. Its shoulders |511 are at all times in engagement with the face 2B of the rollback member, and as the spring 5l is continuously exerting its pressure on the auxiliary plate, rotation of the spindle and the knobs is resisted by the spring 5I. Thus the spindle and knobs are held against free rotation, but they are nevertheless rotatable in the usual manner, that is, by grasping one knob or the other and rotating it against the pressure of the spring 5l. and finally against the pressure of the springs 50.
In the present drawings set screws are shown as securing the knobs to the spindle, but any other suitable means may be employed, and while this and other features of the invention have been more or less specically described and illusi" trated, I Wish it understood that changes may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims, and similarly that the materials and finish of the several parts employed may be such as the experience of vtlie manufacturer or varying conditions may dictate.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a lock, a latch bolt adapted to assume a v partially or a fully projected position, a spindle having means for retracting the latch bolt from the partially projected position, a movable member Within the spindle having one surface engaging and retaining the latch bolt in the partially projected position and another surface adapted to engage and permit full projection of the latch bolt, and manually operated means for moving the member to present either surface for engagement'with the latch bolt, so as to maintain the latch bolt in either the partially or the fully projected position.
2. In a lock, a latch bolt adapted to assume a partially or a fully projected position, a spindle having means for retracting the latch bolt from the partially projected position, a movable member within thespindle having one surface engaging and retaining the latch bolt in the partially projected position and another surface adapted to engage and permit full projection of the latch bolt, and key actuated means for moving said member to present either surface for engagement With the latch bolt, so as to maintain the latch bolt in the partially or the fully projected position.
3. In a lock, a retractor plate, a latch bolt secured thereto, said retractor plate adapted to assume two positions, one in which the latch bolt is partially projected and a second position in which Ithe latch bolt is fully projected, a single tubular spindle journaled in the lock, a rollback member on said spindle engageable Vwith the retractor plate. and adapted to retract the latch bolt from the partiallyv projected position, a dog on the retractor plate engageable with the spindle andy :logging the spindle against rotation when thellatch bolt is fully projected, a rotatable member Within the spindle. controlling the position of the retractor plate and the dog and latch bolt carried thereby, and rotatable means at each end of the spindle for rotating the rotatable member 'to control the position of the latch bolt and the dog. Y' I Ina lock, a retractor plate, a latch bolt secured. thereto, said retractor plate adapted to assume .two positions, one in which the latch bolt is. partially projected and a second position in which the latch bolt is fully projected, a single tubular spindle journaled in the lock', a rollback member on said spindle engageable with the retractor plate and adapted to retract the latch bolt from the partially projected position, a dog on the retractor plate engageable with the spindle and dogging the spindle against rotation when the latch bolt is fully projected, a rotatable member Within the spindle controlling the position of the retractor plate and the dog and latch bolt carried thereby, key actuated means at one end of the spindle, and manually actuated means at the opposite end of the spindle, for rotating the rotatable member so as to control the position of the retractor plate and thereby the position of the latch bolt and the dog.
5. In a lock of the character described, a tubular spindle having a rollback member formed thereon. a retractor plate having a latch bolt secured thereto, said rollback member being engageable with the retractor plate to impart a retracting movement to the plate and the latch bolt when the spindle is rotated, Said retractor plate and the latch bolt adapted to assume one position where the latch bolt is fully projected and the retractor plate is in engagement with the rollback member, and a second position Where the retractor plate is held out of engagement with the rollback member and the latch bolt is partially,7 retracted, a member Within the spindle and engageable with the retractor plate to maintain it and the latch bolt in one position or the other, and an auxiliary spring-actuated plate engageable with the rollback member at all times and resisting rotation of the rollback member and spindle.
6. In a lock of the character described, a tubular spindle having a rollback member formed thereon, a retractor plate having a latch bolt secured thereto, said rollback member being engageable with the retractor plate to impart a retracting movement to the plate and the latch bolt when the spindle is rotated, said retractor plate and the latch bolt adapted to assume one position where the latch bolt is fully projected and the retractor plate is in engagement with the rollback member, and a second position Where the retractor plate is held out of engagement with the rollback member and the latch bolt is partially retracted, and a yieldable member resisting free rotation of the spindle and rollback member at all times.

In a lock of the character described, tubular spindle having a rollback member formed thereon, a retractor plate having a latch bolt secured thereto, said rollback member being engageable with the retractor plate to impart a retracting movement to the plate and the latch bolt when the spindle is rotatedsaid retractor plate and the latch bolt adapted to assume one position where the latch bolt is fullr7 projected and the retractor plate is in engagement' with the rollback member and a second position where the reti-actor plate is held out of engagement with the rollback member and the latch bolt is partially retracted, a knob secured on the spindle, and an auxiliary spring-actuated plate engaging the rollback member at all times and resisting free rotation of the spindle, said plate permitting rotation of the spindle when the knob is grasped and rotated.
8. In a lock of the character described, a tubular spindle having a rollback member formed thereon, a retractor plate having a latch bolt secured thereto, said rollback member being engageable with the retractor plate to impart a retracting movement to the plate and the latch bolt when the spindle is rotated, said retractor plate and the latch bolt'adapted to assume one position where the latch bolt is fully projected and the retractor--plate is in engagement with the rollback member, and a second position where the retractor plate is held out of engagement with the rollback member and the latch bolt is partially retracted, a member Within the spindle and engageable with the retractor plate to maintain it and the latch bolt in one position or the other, means at one end of the spindle for actuating the member Within the spindle and thereby controlling the position of the retractor plate and the latch bolt, a yieldable member resisting free rotation of the spindle and rollback member atall times, and a knob on the spindle, said yieldable member permitting rotation of the spindle when the knob is manually rotated.
