Description

2 Sheets-Shea?` 2. F. K. HAIN.
Car-Axle Box Cover.
No. 58,640, Patented Oct. 9, 1866.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
F. K. HAIN, OF RENOVO, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN AXLE-BOX COVERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,640, dated October 9, 1866 I To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, F. K. HAIN, of Renovo, in the county ot Clinton and State ot' Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved AXle-BoX Cover; and I do hereby declare that the followingvis a full, clear, and exact descrip tion thereof, which will enable those skilled inthe art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ot this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of this invention. Fig. 2 is a front View ot' the saine. Fig. 3 is a-n end view of the saine. Fig. 4 is a plan or top view of the same.
The remaining` figures are details which will he referred to as the description progresses.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an axle-box cover, which is provided with two gudgeons intended to work in suitable eyeson the box. One of these eyes is open on top, so that the cover, when turned clear up, can be removed, and in the other uncut eye a spring is placed, which presses against the end of. the gudgeons and forces the cover up against the inner shoulder of the cnt or open eye. This shoulder is provided with a notch, into which the cover catches, so that it is prevented from opening spontaneously,'and the inner edges or shoulders of both eyes form inclined planes, which, in conibination with the spring aforesaid, render the cover self-closing.
A represents an axle-box of any desirable construction and lnade of cast-iron or any suitable material. This axle-box is furnished with a cover, B, which is provided with two gud geons, c b, projecting from a lu g, c, that eX- tends from the top edge of the cover. (See Fig. l.) These trunnions work in eyes el c, east with or otherwise connected to the box A; and the eye d is cut open 011 top, so that the cover, when turned clear up, can be readily removed.
The eye e is left solid all round, and in its interior is introduced a spiral spring, f, (see Fig. 10,) which presses against the end ot the gudgeon b, "and if the cover is closed down .the edge ofthe lug c is forced into a notch, g,
in the inner edge of the open eye d, whereby said cover is heldin position and prevented from opening spontaneously.V
The inner edges of both eyes d e form inclined planesh, and by the combined action of these inclined planes and otl the springfthe cover is rendered self-closin By these means an axle-box cover is obtained which is securely held in its place, and which cannot get lost, because it can only be disengaged from the box it` it is turned clear up. Said cover is also so arranged that it has atendency to close down and stay closed, so that itcaunot easily be left open by neglect or liy open from some other cause, and the entrance otl dirt and dust is eit'ectuall y prevented.
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The cover B, trunnions a b, springf, eyes d c, with inner inclined planes, the eye d being open and provided with notch g, and the box A, combined and arranged substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
