B. J. SWENSON.
END GATE FASTENER. No. 314.154. Patented Mar. 1'7, 1885.
WITNESSES INVENTOR I TTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES P TENT OFFICEO BENGT J.v SWENSON, OF SUGAR LAND, TEXAS.
END-GATE FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent IP10. 314,154,,dated March 17, 1885.
' Application filed November 19, 1884. (No model.) i
T all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, BENGTJ. SwENsoN, of Sugar Land, inthe county of Fort Bend and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Straining and Looking Buckles for Chains, &c.,- of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists in the hook-ended lever-bu ckle, hereinafter described and claimed,- for drawing up and fastening the endsof chains used on presses, wagons, and other places where a simple and convenient device that can be readily and quickly operated is needed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly sectional, of my device in the unlocked positionas applied to a press for fastening the doors. Fig. 2 shows the same in the locked position. Fig, 3 is a plan view of the same.
As shown, for fastening the doors a of a press, or when used for analogous purposes, such as securing the end-gate of a wagon or the body of a dump-cart, the buckle A is fastened to one end of the straining-chain b. The buckle consists of a handle portion having one end, 0, of hook shape, and, beinghung on the chain-link, formsa lever. The handle portion is grooved or made with lugs d, that pass on the chain when the device is closed can be slipped over the buckle to fasten it se curely. This loop is intended for use when the buckle is applied to a wagon as a precaution against its being loosened by jolting.
To operate the buckle, the hook end is caught in the chain and the handle portion then turned down, which draws the two ends of the chain together and fastens them securely.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The lever-buckle A, comprising the book 0, the handle, the lugs d d on the handle,.and the spring 6, the chains b, and the loop f, substantially as set forth.
2. In a lever-buckle, the lugs d, formed on the handle end, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The spring tongue e, combined with the buckle or chain fastening A, as and for the purpose specified.
