W.'L. NORTON. CORSET FASTENING.
Patented Dec. 31, 1895.
KNDREW BERANANL PNOTO'U'I'HO. WASHINGTU'LD G UNITED STATES PATENT CEETQE,
\VESLEY L. NORTON, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
CORSET-FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,257, dated December 31, 1895.
Application filed October 2, 1895, Serial No. 564,439- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVESLEY L. NORTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corset-Fastenings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has reference to corset-fastenings such as are secured to the springbusks at the edges of the corsets, and has for its object to so secure these fastenings to the busks that no separate rivets are necessary, while, more important still, the fastenings cannot work loose or slip.
Prior to my invention very many corsetfastenings have been contrived in which prongs or similar clips have been used instead of rivets and passed through openings in the busks or clasped around the busks; but the manner in which such prongs or clips have been disposed has proved a serious defect, in that the fastenings would work loose and permit'of a side play. My improvement obviates this defect, and will be best understood from the following description, taken in .con-
. a view similar to Fig. 4, but showing a slight modification of my improvement.
Similar numbers of reference denote like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
My improved fastening comprises a sheetmetal body 1 having therein the usual opening 2 leading into a contracted gate 3, such as characterizes all fastenings of this description and which are used in connection with a stud. Formed integral with this body are laterally extending clips 4 and a rearwardlyextending clip 5, as shown at Fig. 1. In applying my fastening to a corset-busk, these clips are bent up at right angles to the body and are insertedthrough openingsG '7 through the busk 10 and are then bent down fiat against the under side of the busk, so as to cause the fastening to be firmly clinched to said busk. The length of the clip 5 is such that it extends beyond the edge of the busk, and this extension, which I have designated by the number 8, is crimped firmly around the edge of the busk, so as to lie flat against the body 1 immediately in the rear of the opening 2. The clips 4 are of such a length that the extreme ends thereof will abut snugly against the sides of the clip 5, or enter side notches therein, so that it will be clear that there can be no loosening of the fastening.
It will be observed that the manner of securing the clip 5 gives as much security as would be had if two clips were used embracing the busk at both edges, while the abutting of the lateral clips 4 against the sides of the clip 5 not only prevents anyplay of these clips 4 within the openings 6 through the busk, but also the clip 5 is securely held as against any side play.
Although the abutting of the ends of the clips 4 against the side edges of the clip 5 effectually prevents any side play of these clips 4, additional precautions, looking toward this end, may be taken by simply notching the sides of the clip 5, as shown at 9 in Fig. 6, and then forcing the ends of the clips 4 within these notches.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1'. In a corset fastening, the combination with the busk having openings out therethrough, of the fastening device consisting of a sheet metal body having lateral extending clips and a rearwardly extending clip, these sheet metal body having two clips extending laterally from opposite sides and a third clip extending from the rear of said body, said clips being passed through the openings, the rear clip being bent flat against the bottom of the busk toward the front edge of the latter, while the side clips are bent fiat against the bottom of the busk toward the side edges of the rear clip, substantially as set forth.
3. In a corset fastening, the bush having openings therethrough, and the fastening piece consisting of a sheet metal body having suitable button holes, and having a rearward clip with side notches, said clip passing through an opening in the busk and thence I 5 forward fiat against the busk, the fastening piece also having side clips which pass through holes in the bush and thence extend flat against the busk and into the notches in the downturned rear clip, all substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
l/VESLEY L. NORTON.
