UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT E. DURLAND, OF STAPLEHURST, NEBRASKA.
BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 699,502, dated May 6, 1902. Application filed October 4, 1901. Serial No. 77,592. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT E. DURLAND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Staplehurst, in the county of Seward and State of Nebraska, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Buckles; andldeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my buckle as applied. Fig.- 2 is a side elevation of the same on a larger scale and partly broken away. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the wedge-section. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the socket-section.
This invention has relation to harness buckles, and has for its object to provide a fastening or buckle of novel and efiicient character for the ends of straps which will have no sharp or pointed projecting portions to catch upon fiy-nets or to catch the tail of the horse, which will be adjustable, and will require no perforations in the straps for fastening rivets.
With these objects in View the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the device is shown as applied to fasten the ends of a strap when looped for a snap-hook to the body of the strap, as in the case of a brace, although the buckle is equally well adapted for use for almost all buckles used upon harness.
In the drawings the letter A designates the end of a brace-strap, and B is my buckle,
B is also preferably formed of sheet metal,
having lateral guard-walls b and reversely bent or doubled to form the spring wedgetongue 11 separated by an interval from the base of the wedge and inclosed between such walls and wedging against the outer inclined wall of the socket-section when the parts are drawn together, the rear portion of said tongue projecting from the socket-section for ready depression to release the fastening when desired.
In securing the two sections of my buckle to the strap I punch small holes in the metal of the same from within outwardly, the metal standing up around such holes to form the outer sharp-pointed or jagged projections c, which dig into the surface of the leather strap sufficiently to secure the parts in their adj ustments.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A buckle or strap fastening comprising the socket-section, and the wedge-section fitting therein, and having the spring wedge-tongue separated by an interval from the base of the wedge, and the lateral guard-walls for said tongue, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT E. DURLAND. Witnesses:
ALBERT Mnrz, G. H. TERWILLIGER.
