Patented April 16, 1907.
Application led December l5, 1905. Serial No. 347,940.
T0 all 1117741717/ it www cnw/cern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HERBERT LAMBERT, asubject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Slocan Junction, county of Kootenay, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snap-Hooks, and I do .hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to snap-hooks.
The object of my invention is to provide a hook which will not become accidentally disengaged from a loop, link, or other device used in connection therewith, but which may be actuated without the operator pressing the spring of the hook 5 and my invention con sists of the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as herein illustrated, described, and claimed. j
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, I have illustrated one form of embodiment of my invention, in which drawings similar reference characters designate corresponding parts, and in which- Figure l is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the spring.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a shank having on one end an integral eye 2, and having its opposite end bent to form a hook 3. The eXtreme end of the hook 3 is formed into a flattened and broadenedV plate 4.
The spring 5 has its end. secured tothe shank l adjacent the eye 2, as by means 'of the rivets 6. The portion of the spring 5 adjacent the flattened end 4l of the hook3 has recesses 7 cut therein to form a reduced neck, and the eXtreme end of the spring 5 is provided with a coil 8, which is broadened out with relation to the reduced portion of the spring 5.
The object of having a hook 3 terminate in a broadened and flattened plate is to throw the ring or hook usually used in connection with a snap-hook past the end of the spring 5, so that pressure on the side of the spring by such ring will not accidentally disengage the hook. The object of having recesses 7 to form a reduced neck on the spring is to permit the easy insertion of a ring without having to press the spring 5. In withdrawing a ring from the hook 3 it is held against the under surface of the hook 3, and striking the coil 8 the spring 5 may be easiljT depressed without the operator having to press on the spring 5 itself. By having the coil 8 broadened out immediately beneath the Hattened portion 4 if the ring used in connection therewith strikes against the side of the coil portion 8 it will be deflected so that it will slide farther down on the spring 5 and will not become disengaged. In use the pressure eX- erted by a ring or hook in connection with a snap-hook of the kind described is generally along the shank l rather than the hook 3, so that it is fulfilling one object of my invention to secure one end of the spring 5 to the shank adjacent the eye 2 rather than to the hook 3.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A snap-hook comprising a shank having an integral eye at one end and a hook at its opposite end terminating in a flattened and broadened plate, and a spring secured to the shank adjacent the eye and provided with a coil extending beneath the liattened plate and also provided with recesses in its opposite sides adjacent the flattened plate.
2. A snap-hook comprising a shank having an integral eye at one end and a hook at its opposite end terminating in a flattened and broadened plate, and a spring secured to the shank adjacent the eye and provided with a coil extending beneath the flattened plate and also provided with recesses in its opposite sides adjacent the flattened plate, said coil portion being broader than said reduced pore tion.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM HERBERT LAMBERT.
