SWIVEL SNAP-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 720,378, dated February 10, 1903.
Application filed October 23, 1902. Serial No. 128,513. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAM PHILLIPS, of Sherrill, in the county of Oneida, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Swivel Snap-Hooks, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in sWiveled snap-hooks.
My object is to reduce the cost of manufacture by reducing thev number of parts and assembling the same without rivets or bolts and at the same time to increase the strength and freedom of operation of the parts one upon the other.
To this end the invention consists in forming and combining the parts as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved swivel snaphook. Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional views taken on lines 2 2 and 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the detached hook piece. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the extended detached bar for forming the swivel-head. Fig. 6 is a similar view of the detached spring retainer-piece.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
This swivel snap-hook comprises three distinct partsviz., a main hook-shaped body 1, a spring retainer-piece or keeper 2, and a swiveled head 3, each of which parts is formed of a single piece of suitable metal and assembled in a manner hereinafter described. One end of the main body 1 is formed with a hook 4, and its other end is provided with a pair of slots or elongated substantially parallel openings 5 and a T-shaped extension 6. The keeper 2 consists of a piece of spring metal having one end formed with oppositelyprojecting arms 7, inserted through the openings 5 from one face of the main body of the hook and overturned or clenched against the opposite face of said main body, thereby firmly locking the two parts together. The
opposite end of the keeper is free to spring inwardly and is normally tensioned to engage the inner face of the hook 4:. The swivelhead 3 is also formed of a single piece of wrought or other bendable metal, and its 0pposite ends 8 are flattened and provided with openings 9,which are cut one way long enough to receive the head of the T-shaped extension 6 when assembling the part of one upon the other.
'In assembling the swivel-head 3 upon the T-shaped extension 6 the part between the flattened ends 8 is bent into the desired formas, for instance, a ringand the flattened ends are folded or lapped one upon the other, with their openings alined with each other, whereupon said open ends are slipped over the T-shaped extension 6, and the side walls of the openings 9 are then compressed around the reduced portion of the extension, so as to make the openings 9 smaller either way than the head of the extension.
' The spring-keeper and swivel-head are thus attached to the main body without rivets or bolts, each part carrying its own fastening means, and all of the parts may be readily and economically manufactured and assembled to produce a much cheaper and stronger device than those now in use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A swivel snap-hook including a main hook-body having a T-shaped head, and a swivel-head consisting of a bar having its opposite ends flattened and provided with openings, said open ends being lapped one over the other with their openings alined and slipped over the T-shaped head, and their. walls compressed around the reduced portion of the T- shaped head to hold the parts from detachment one from the other.
2. A swivel snap-hook comprising a main hook-body having a pair of elongated slots and a T-shaped extension, a spring-keeper formed with laterallyprojecting arms inserted in the slots and clenched therein, a swivel-head consisting of a bar having its opposite ends flattened and provided with openings alined with each other, the T-shaped head being inserted in said openings and the walls of the openings being compressed upon the reduced portion of the T-shaped head.
