PATENT OFFICE.
, HARNESS-BUCKLE.
SPECIEIGATIQN forming part of nemers Patent No. 7eo,584,dated January 24,1905.
Applicationled October 25, 1904:. Serial No. 229,927.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES ISAAC STAMPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meade, in the county of Meade and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness-Buckles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relatesto new and useful improvements in buckles; and the object of the invention is to produce a combination cover and buckle especially adapted for connection with lines and check-lines of double harnesses, breeching, and other parts of harnesses.
The invention consists more specilically in the provision of a buckle without a protruding tongue, which is commonly used upon buckles and which frequently causes the tearing of fly-nets and other parts of harness; and it consists of a frame member having loops at the ends through which a strap is adapted to be passed and in the provision of crosspieces connecting the walls of said member and in the provision of a hook having a spur upon one side of the shank portion thereof and a loop at the opposite end for engagement with the strap and so arranged that said hook may engage one of the cross-pieces through which the strap passes and the parts be held in adjusted positions.
The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and in combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and then specically defined in the appended claim.
`My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my buckle,`
of, and Fig. t is a detail view of the hook member.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the body portion of the buckle member, having iianges A along the marginal edges thereof with cross-pieces C and D, the former of which serves to hold the two straps E and F in the relation shown in Fig. l of the drawings.
Gr designates a member having a hook G' at one end and a loop H at the other, said loop H adapted to engage a loop I, formed in the end of the strap F. The opposite edges of the shank portion of said hook are bent at an angle, as at O, adapted when the hook is in a locked relation to extend over the edges of the strap F, and the outer faces of said flanged portions are flush vwith the opposite flanged faces of the body portion of the buckle. A spur N projects from the rear face of the shank portion of said hook and is adapted to engage an aperture in the strap E when the straps are fastened together. made preferably round, as is also the crosspiece D, which is adapted to be engaged by said hook.
In fastening the straps together the strap F is passed beneath the loop or cross-piece C and between the same and the strap E. The hook Gr is caughtunderneath the cross-piece D and the strap F pulled through underneath the cross-piece'C, which will bring the shank l' portion G of the hook iiat against the face of the strap E, and the spur upon the inner face of the hook-when brought into engagement with a perforation of the strap E will serve to hold the two straps fastened together. When it is desired to disconnect the straps, the loop at the end of the shank portion of the hook is swung away from the body portion of the buckle, and in which movement the spur N will draw out of` the aperture in the strap E, after which the straps may be readily detached or adjusted. y
While I have shown a particular detailed form of apparatus embodying my invention, it will be understood that Imay vary the details of the same, if desired, Without in any Way departing from the spirit of the invention.
Said hook is Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A buckle comprising a body portion having flanges along its opposite edges, cross-pieces forming loops, a strap passing through said loops, a. hook member with rounded hook at one end adapted for engagement with one of said cross-pieces forming the loops of said body portion, a strap secured to the other end of said hook member, a spur projecting from the inner face of said hook member and designed to engage a perforation in said strap which passes through said body portion oi thc buckle, the edges of the shank portion ol. the hook being bent at an angle, as shown and dcscribed.
In testimony whereof I hereunto ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES ISAAC STAB/WER.
