IMPROVEMENT IN ELASTIC STRAPS FOR GARMENTS.
JdHN W. BOUGHTON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 60,131, dated December 4, 1866. i
SPECIFICATION.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. BOUGHTON, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Elastic Straps and their fastenings, used on articles of clothing; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents the strap and clasp combined fastened to thevclothing.
Figure 2 represents a clasp with tongues on two of its sides.
Figure 3, a clasp with tongues on one side and a loop on the other; and
Figure 4, a clasp with tongues on one side and a buckle on the other.
The object of my invention is to introduce a cheap and convenient contrive-nee for fastening and supporting pantaloons, drawers, vests, and other articles of clothing, by means -a strap made entire out of India rubber, in combination with a light metallic clasp or plate, and tolsupersede stifi' straps and buckles by my cheap, durable, and at the same time elastic, and therefore pleasant, in wearing contrivance.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. p
The arrangement consists of a strap, A, cut out of a piece of India rubber, and of twilight metallic clasps or plates, B B, one or two sides of which have tongues, O G, (two or more on each side.) One side of these clasps or plates, which has to be fastened to the India-rubber strap, has invariably the tongues, while the other side may be'arranged in several ways; it may have tongues, as shown of fig. 2; or may have a loop, as on fig..
3; or may be arranged as a buckle, as shown on fig. 4; but in every case the clasp or plate is made of one piece of metal, except in the buckle. -To attach the clasp or plate to the rubber strap, cuts, D D, are made across the last, into and through which the tongues, C G, are introduced and their ends bent underneath. To attach the clasp or plate to the clothing, similar cuts are made in the clothing for the tongues, if the clasp is tongued,
or a stifi strap is sewn on to the clothing and its end introduced into the loop of the clasp, when it is loopedand sewn together, or it is buckled on, if the clasp has buckle.
-Being aware of the fact that India rubber has been and is used in elastic straps, belts, etc., and that the arrangement of the loops and buckles is not new, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An elastic strap A, having an attaching plate, or its equivalent, at each end, forapplication to the garment,
substantially as herein shown and described.
, JNO. W. BOUGHTON.
