Specification of Letters Patent.
SIDE-STRAP BUCKLE.
Patented Jan. 26, 1915.
[0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL HARTMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Side-Strap Buckles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion.
In the use of buckles on side straps on knee pants or knickerbockers and similar articles, where the buckle is permanently attached to the article, and where the engaged strap has to be buckled and unbuckled frequently, the strap is quickly mutilated or disfigured and rendered useless by such buckling and unbuckling. Attempts have been made to obviate this diificulty by providing the buckle with other means than tongues or prongs for use as the engaging element; but buckles provided with prongs or teeth for engaging the strap afford so much greater security that they are more generally used than the other kinds of fasteners. Prior to the present invention also, these side strap buckles with prongs or teeth have been made with hooks to engage eyelets or similar openings in the article to which they are applied, so that the buckle may be adjusted and secured in proper place on the strap and the parts fastened and unfastened without disconnecting the strap from the buckle teeth. The present invention relates to this last mentioned class of side strap buckles.
The invention consists of a buckle, of the side strap type mentioned, in which a notched cross-bar is used in connection with a hook or equivalent head which may be engaged by the notched cross-bar to eifect the fastening of the article and from which head the buckle may be readily disengaged to permit the unfastening of the article without altering the adjustment of the strap and buckle with relation one to the other, as I will proceed now to explain and finally claim.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, in the several figures of which like parts are similarly designated, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of the lower end of one leg of a pair of knee pants or knickerbockers with the placket unbuckled and open and the strap and buckle turned back. Fig. 2 is a top plan view, and Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the buckle detached. Fig. 1 is a cross section taken in the plane of line A B, Fig. 2, and looking in the direction of the arrows.
The drawings show the parts enlarged, although the buckles may be made in any required size.
Describing the invention as used to fasten and unfasten the placket of a pants leg but without thereby limiting its applicability, it is to be noted that ordinarily a band 1 is placed at the bottom of the leg, and this band is extended at one side to form the strap 2. On this strap is placed a buckle 3 at the proper position to permit fitting of the trousers about the leg of the wearer. On one of the end-bars i of this buckle are made the teeth or prongs 5, adapted to en gage the strap 2 to fix the adjustment of the buckle on the strap. Between the end-bar at and the end-bar 6 and extending integrally from the side-bars 7 is the cross-bar 8, preferably depressed below the level of the face of the buckle, and this cross-bar is provided with a transversely arranged notch 9 which is adapted to engage a head 10 on the opposite side of the band 1 to fasten the placket or opening in the bottom of the trousers leg. This head 10 may be, as herein shown, a hook, resembling in general construction the ordinary lacing-hook commonly used on shoes, and so placed that the notched crossbar may be engaged therewith and disengaged therefrom readily in order to effect the closing and opening of the placket.
In order to facilitate the finding of the hook, leading edges 11 of the notch may be bent down slightly from the plane of the cross-bar rearwardly, as shown in Fig. 1-, and this bending down of these edges together with the depression of the crossbar, will aid in increasing the frictional engagement of the crossbar with the hook and so insure the retention of the fastening against accidental displacement in the move" ments of the wearer. The invention, however, is not limited to a buckle having the edges of the notched cross-bar deflected, as just described.
While the end-bar and its teeth 5 positively engage the strap, the fixing of the engagement may be insured by passing the free end of the strap over the cross-bar and through the opening 12 between it and the end-bar 6 and underneath the said end-bar 6, as indicated in Fig. 1.
By the construction described, the buckle may be economically produced and subject edto the various manufacturing processes necessary to finish it, Without liability of injury to any of its parts, larly true as compared with prior constructions Where a hook was formed on the buckle to engage an eye or an eyelet to effect the fastening of the article.
What claim is 1. A buckle, provided with means for holding a strap in adjusted position, and a depressed cross-bar, said depressed cross-bar provided With a notch arranged transversely thereof and adapted to engage a complemental fastening member on the part to be buckled.
2. A. buckle, provided With sidebars and end-bars, one of which latter is provided with means for holding a strap in adjusted position, and a depressed cross-bar provided with a notch arranged transversely thereof to engage a complemental member on the part to be buckled.
3. A buckle, comprising side-bars and end-bars, one of said end-bars being pro and this is particuend-bars, one
vided with teeth to engage a strap so that the buckle may be adjusted thereon in any desired position, and a depressed cross-bar provided With a notch arranged trans versely thereof the leading edges of which are depressed from the plane of said crossbar, said notch being adapted to engage a complemental member on the part to be buckled. i
4:. A buckle, comprising side-bars and of said end-bars being provided With teeth to engage a strap so that the bucklemay be adjusted thereon in any desired position, and a depressed cross-bar provided With a notch arranged transversely thereof and with its opening adjacent the toothed end-bar and adapted to engagea complemental member on the part to be buckled. j g
In testimony whereof I. have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of April A. 1914c.
