BUCKLE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AXEL Gnonen EKLUND, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Attleboro Falls, in the county of Bristol and State of li lassachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to buckles of the class more particularly adapted for adjustably retaining a strap or band for a wrist watch, or the like; and the invention has for its objects: first, to provide such a buckle that will be neat and attractive in appearance; second, to so form the buckle that it will lie perfectly flat against the surface it engages; third, that the strap or band may be readily connected to it by the hand of the wearer and that Without sewing or other fastening; and fourth, that the parts of the buckle may be readily and releasably connected together and to withstand any strain which may be brought upon it and readily disconnected when desired.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating my improved buckle as connected to a wrist-watch strap, or band.
Fig. 2- is a face view of the inner plate of the buckle.
Fig. 3- is a central sectional. edge view of this inner plate, showing the oppositely disposed hook-shaped portions formed thereon.
Fig. 4-- is a face view of the outer plate of the buckle.
Fig. 5 is a central sectional edge view of this outer plate.
Fig. 6- is a central sectional edge view showing the two superimposed plates connected together; also showing the strap or band as connected to and engaged by this buckle.
My improved buckle is formed of two separate superimposed plates or members, one releasably connectedto the other, the same comprising an inner plate 10 which may be formed of sheet metal or other suitable material and is perforated or cut out at 11 and 12 providing a central bar 13 Specification of Letters Patent.

over which the bight or body portion 14; of the strap or band 15 is adapted to pass, which bar frictionally engages the band to prevent the buckle from slipping thereon. The engaging face of this bar may be roughened if desired to further prevent slipping on the strap.
The inner edge of bar 16 at one end of this inner or under plate is turned upwardly;
and then outwardly forming a comparatively deep outwardly turned hook-shaped flange or edge 17 and the inner edge of the opposite end bar 18 is also bent up, and oppositely turned to provide a relatively shallow hook-shaped flange 19.
The top plate 20 of these superimposed buckle members is, like the lower plate, preferably formed of sheet metal, the outer surface of the inner edge 21 of the end bar 22 being beveled to fit into the deep hook 17, and the inner under edge 23 of the opposite end bar 24 is undercut or beveled, so that when the rear bar 22 is positioned in the deep hook 17, this beveled edge 23 will engage the rounding hook edge 19 of the inner buckle member, and when pressure is brol'lght to force one member against the other this hook 19 will snap over the edge 25 of the upper member and so securely but releasably retain the two members together one upon the other.
On this upper plate I may also form a cross bar 30 which registers with the under cross bar 13, but which is spaced apart from the same sufficiently to permit the strap to pass therebetween, which upper bar serves to bite and further prevent the buckle from slipping on the strap.
This upper member is also provided with a bail portion 26 which is preferably slotted at 27 so as to permit the loop 28 of .the strap to be passed therethrough onto but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
1. A buckle comprising two independent superimposed plates, one having a transverse bar by Which the bight of a strap is frietionally retained, a bail on one of said plates to which the end of the' strap is connected, and hook-shaped members serving as a spring snap lock for releasably connecting one of said plates to the other.
2. A buckle comprising two independent superimposed plates, one having a transverse Copies of this patent may be obtained for bar by which the bight of the strap is trietionally retan1ed,'said plates having a relatively deep outwardly turned hook :uljacent M one end and an oppositely turned relatively shallow hook adjacent its opposite end, the other of said plates being provided with a complemental under beveled bar to snap into said shallow hook to releasably retain said plates together, and a bail on one of said plates to which the strap end may be fastened.
In testimony whereof I allix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
