SUSPENDER FASTENER.
(Application filed Feb. 5, IQOXJ,
(No Modem I El Hrm/11 2236/ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
AUGUSTUS S. HENSHAW, OF BROOKLYN, NEW' YORK.
SUSPENDER-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 694,857, dated March 4, 1902. Application tiled February 5, 1901. Serial No. 46,081- (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS S. HENsHAw, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of 'Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Suspender-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in suspender-fasteners; and the object is to provide a simple and improved fastener for attaching the Suspenders to the waistband of the trousers, said fastener being carried permanentlyby the Suspenders and so constructed that it may be readily attached to or removed from the trousers and when attached thereto rmly engage the same without slipping or becoming accidentally disengaged therefrom and without tearing or injuring the trousers in any way.
W'ith the above objects in view the invention consists in the novel features of con? struction hereinafter fully described, particularly pointed out in the` claims, and clearly illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective View showing my invention in operation, aportion of the trousers-band and suspender-tab being shown. Fig. 2 is a sectional View taken transversely through the fastener, the suspendertab, and the waistband; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the clasp detached from the waistband and the suspender-tab.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, A designates the, body of my fastener, which is bent to substantially l U shape, the edge of one of the legs thereof being formed upon its inner side with a plurality of inwardly and slightly upwardly extending te'eth or tangs B. The other leg of the body A is formed intermediately of its ends witha transversely-extending slot C, the ends of which terminate in inwardly-projecting perforated ears CL. A clamping member is pivotally held in said slot C, said member having an inwardly-extending clamping portion or plate D, the ends of which are provided with pintles that engage the ears d and an outwardly-extending slightly-curved finends loops G, which are extended through 'the'U-shaped fastener and between the legs thereof, loosely connecting the fastener to the In operation the fastener is applied to th trousers band, the legs thereof straddling said band. The Enger portion E is then pressed downwardly, which raises the clamping portion D of the clamping chamber, causing the same to press against the opposite side of the waistband from that upon which the teeth or tangs B are positioned, so that the material of the waistband is forced into said teeth and the suspender-tab thus securely attached to the band.
The fastener may be positioned upon the band either with the clamping member upon the outer side of said yband or upon the inner side thereof, as may be desired, the device presenting a much neater appearance with the clamping member upon the inner side and being much more convenient in operation with the clamping member upon the outer side.
It will ofcourse be understood that each suspender-tab carries one of the fasteners and that said fasteners may be ornamented as may be desired, so as to present a neat and attractive appearance. v
By the use of 1my improved fastener snspender-buttons upon the trousers-band are dispensed with, and therefore all of the inconvenience incident to the breaking or tearing ofy the same is obviated, the fastener being always at hand for being quickly attached to or detached from the trousers-band.
Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to .secure by Letters Patent, is- Y As an improved article of manufacture, a suspender-fastener consisting of a metallic plate bent centrally upon itself, one edge of the plate being turned inwardly and serrated or toothed, the opposing member of the plate being slotted transversely and provided with inwardly-projecting integral perforated lugs to the end of the suspender, substantially as shown and described.
AUGUSTUS S. HENSHAV.
