COMBINED BUTTON AND GARMENT-SUPPORTER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MAURICE M. STRAUSS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Button and Garment-Supporter, of which the following is declared to be a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to buttons and garment supporting devices together with improved fastening means therefor.

The object of the invention is to provide simple and effective means for securing buttons to the waist-band of trousers and the like and for holding supporting devices for drawers or other garments upon the inner face of the waist-band.

WVith these objects in view the invention consists in the features of construction, eombinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a sectional view of one form of the improved button and supporter shown attached in place upon a waist-band. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the supporting hook shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the button shown in Fig. 1 before it has been secured in place. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of a modified form of the invention and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the garment hook shown in Fig. l. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of another form of garment sup orter.

The waist-band 10 of a pair of trousers or other garment is shown in section in Fig. 1 and one of the buttons 11 is shown with which the suspender tapes engage for supporting the trousers.

The body of the improved button 11 may be made of any suitable material, but is preferably formed of separate stamped metal sections which are secured together by bending the edge portion 12 of the outer button section 13 over the edge of the inner section 14. The inner section is provided with cored or hollow metal shank 15 preferably stamped up from the body of the inner section or otherwise formed in piece therewith or connected thereto. The shank 15 of the button has an enlarged shouldered portion 16 adapted to engage the outer face of the waist-band and a series of sharp prongs or bendable clips Specification of Letters Patent.

17 which can be readily forced through the body of the cloth and bent over into engagement with the inner face thereof to firmly grip the button in place. A ring or washer 18 is placed over the clips after they are forced through the cloth and the latter are then bent outwardly around the ring and into the cloth as shown. The shouldered portion 16 of the shank holds the body of the button su'l'liciently off-set from the outer face of the cloth and so that it may be readily engaged by the suspender tapes.

A garment holder or supporter 19 may be formed in any suitable manner and made of any suitable material. Such supporter is provided with a laterally extended metal shank 20 adapted to extend within the cored shank 15 of the button and hold the supporter in place upon the inner face of the waist-band 10. In the form shown in Fig. 1 the metal shank 20 of the supporter 19 is sharp and adapted to be forced through the body of the cloth inside the prongs 17 and ring or washer 18, through the cored shank 15 and through a central opening in the outer section 13 of the button. Preferably, the outer button section 13 has a central recessed portion 21 extending within the enlarged shouldered portion 16 of the shank, and the outer end of the supporter shank 20 is bent or headed over within the recess 21 to hold the supporter 19 firmly in place.

In applying the combined button and garment supporter in place upon the waistband, the prongs or clips 17 of the button shank are forced through the cloth of the waist-band, ring or washer 18 is placed over the clips 17 and the latter are then bent outwardly and Well around the ring or washer 18 into the cloth so that there is no danger that they will prick or cut the -lingers of the wearer. The shouldered portion 16 of the shank is of such size that thecloth is firmly gripped between the faces of the shouldered ortion and of the ring 18 so as to securely hold the button in place, and since the faces of the shoulder and Washer extend over a considerable portion of the cloth, there is no danger that the latter will easily become torn. The garment supporter 19 is then secured in place by forcing its shank 20 through the body of the cloth and hollow shank of the button and then heading or bending over its outer end within the recess 21 in the outer face of the button. By this the face of the depressed portion 21 of the arrangement the button and garment supporter are firmly held in place upon the outer and inner faces respectively of the waist-band and in such position that the suspender tapes may readily engage the button while the drawers may be supported by the garment holding device 19. Suitable tools may be employed for conveniently bending over the clips 17 and heading or turning over the end of the shank 20 so that the buttons may be rapidly secured in position.

In the form shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the garment supporter 19 is provided with a metal shank 20 preferably stamped up from sheet metal and com rising a headed end 22 and a series of lateral y projecting bendable prongs 23. In this form the central depressed portion 21 of the outer section of the button extends, as shown, within the enlarged shouldered portion 16 of the shank, but its inner face is spaced somewhat apart from the face of the shoulder. In securing the button and garment supporter in place upon the waist-band, the button is secured in posi tion as previously described, with reference to the form shown in Fig. 1. The core of shankv 15 in the button shown in Fig. 4 is somewhat larger than that shown in Fig. 1 and of sufficient size to admit the prongs 23 of the shank 20. These prongs are then forced through the cloth inside the ring 18, and as they are forced to position the prongs are bent outwardly and extend between the faces of the central depressed portion 21 and the shoulder 16, as indicated in the drawing so that the garment supporter 19 is securely held in place.

To facilitate the outward expansion of the metal prongs or fingers 23 on the shank 20, the ends of these prongs are preferably bent outward slightly as indicated in Fig. 5, and

outer button section 13, is provided with a curved in-set face 24 which engages the ends of the metal prongs 23 and assist in expanding them as they are forced into position. The whole device may then be firmly gripped in place by exerting pressure upon the face of the depressed portion 21 and the headed end 22 of the shank 20 so that the prongs 23 are firmly gripped between the depressed portion 21 of the outer button section 13 and the shoulder 16 of the inner button sec tion 14. If desired, a suitable tool may be provided for conveniently securing the shank 20 of the supporter 19 in place.

The garment supporter may be of any suitable form and constructed of any suitable material, but preferably it is in the form of a U-shaped hook as shown, to engage the tape on the drawers. In Fig. 1 the U-shaped hook 19 is constructed of a single length of bent wire. The wire is bent centrally to form an outer leg or tongue 25. The sides of the tongue are then bent upwardly to form the other leg 26 of the U-shaped hook and these sides are connected together at the upper end of the leg as shown.

In the modified form shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the inner ortion 26 of the hook is preferably of doub e layers of spring metal stamped to proper form and bent together as shown. The upper end of the leg is provided with an opening to receive the shank 20. The outer leg 25 of the hook is preferably formed of wire hinged at its lower end between the double thicknesses of the inner leg 26, which at this point are suitably shaped to receive the round wire of the outer leg 25. If desired, the garment supporter may be in place of the form shown in Figs. 4-and 5 in the form of a clasp such as shown in Fig. 6. The clasp 19" shown in this figure, comprises an outer section 27 formed of wire and hinged at its upper end to the inner section 28 formed of sheet metal. The fastening shank 19 is provided with a head 22 and grip prongs 23 (similar to the form shown in Figs. 4 and 5) and extends through an opening in the upper end of the inner section 28 of the clasp. The lower end of the outer section 27 of the clasp is provided with a loop adapted to fit over a circular off-set portion 29 on the inner section to grip the upper edge of the drawers or other garment to be supported. It is obvious that numerous changes may be made in the details of construction without departure from the essentials of the invention as defined in the claims.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 3 Patent is 1. A garment holding device comprising a button havingan integral hollow shank of metal, said shank having a shoulder for engaging one side of the cloth and bendable grip fingers on its end for engaging the other side of the cloth and a garment supporting device having a shank extending through the hollow shank of said button, substantially as described.

2. A garment holding device comprising a button formed of separate metal sections secured together, said inner section having a hollow shank provided with a shoulder for engaging one side of the cloth, a ring adapted to fit over the shank and engage the other side of the cloth, said shank having grip fingers on its end adapted to bend around said ring into engagement with the cloth and a U-shaped hook having a shank adapted to 10 of the cloth and with bendable grip fingers at its end for engaging the other side of the cloth and a U-shaped garment supporting hook having an integral shank on one leg thereof adapted to extend within the hollow button shank to hold the hook in place, sub- 15 stantially as described.
