UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.;
STEPHEN PORTER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT INy BUCKLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,109, .dated November 16, 1875; application filed May 7, 1875.
To all whom it may concern: A
Be it known that I, STEPHEN PORTER, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk Vand State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and usefnl Improvementin ShoeFastenings, of which thefollowing is a specication:
This invention relates tofastenings forshoes; and consists in combining with a buckle a strap, provided with. a hook or hooks, or an eye or eyes, by which to catch it in the shoe, so that it may be readily removed and attached at pleasure, or that it may be removed entirely, it' desired, and the ordinary lacing used instead, this strap being the connection then on the shoe, which is buckled to the ankle for fastening the shoe on the foot.
In the accompanying plate of drawings, Figure l is a face view of a buckle applied,
according to this invention, to one part of a fastening-strap of a shoe, and buckled to the other strap, making the other part of said fastening-strap. Fig. 2 is a section along line w, Fig. `l. Fig. 3 is a face view of the under side of the buckle.
In lthe drawings, A represents a buckle,
which may be of any of the ordinary kinds, in this instance being shown as made of a buckleframe, a, carrying on its center cross-piece b a tongue, ,0, by which to buckle a strap on the buckle; d d, two hooks swung on the crosspiece b of buckle-frame a, and by these hooks d d the buckle is caught in the eyes f f of a part of the shoe or other article 011 which it is to be used, and thus secured in place. The eyesff may be in the buckle-frame, instead of in the shoe, and the hooks on the shoe; but I prefer the arrangement described. B, a strap, buckling into the buckle A. This strap is provided with hooks h h, by which to hook it to the shoe, and these h ooks are, by their headed parts l Z, attached to the strap, allowing them to be detached and attached readily. A buckle adapted, as has been aboge described, for attachment to thearticle on which it is to be used can obviously be removed at pleasure, and thus made susceptible of use again when the article is Worn out; and, besides, there are other obvious advantage Having now described 'm y invention., what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1st In combination with the buckle A, constructed as described, and the' strap B, the hooks h lz, for attaching the buckle to the shoe, substantially as described.
The above specification of my invention signed by lne this 29th day of April, A. D.
STEPHEN PORTER. Witnesses:
