Description

l a full, clear, and exact description of the i am MARIA J. FOSS", OF CHARLESTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS.
Lette/rs Pate/nt No.`83,146, dated October 20, 1868. I
IMPROVEMENT IN CO-MBINED SKIRT .AND HOSE-SUPPORTERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letten Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARIA J. Foss, of Charlestown, in the county of Middlesex, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and use-1 ful Improvements in Combined Skirt and Hose-Supporters; and I do hereby declare that the following is same, reference being had' to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective -viewvoi' my-combined skirt and hose-supporter, and
Figure 2 represents a top or plan view of the article, with the hose-supporter swung out laterally.
Toenable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it more in detail.
Many efforts have been heretofore made to produce a good, convenient, and -cheap hose-supporter, but noue ofthe devices have come into general use, and
the object of my present improvements is' the production of acombined skirt and hose-supporter,l which shall obviate, in a great measure, theobjections to 'previous hose-supporters, and the nature of my invention consists in the peculiar combination of the various parts which constitutethe article as hereafter de-v In the drawiilgs A is a band, which is provided with a buckle, a, whereby the article can be attached to the waist cf the'wearer. To the bandA is attached the skirt-supporting part B, while to the sides of the part B are attached the hip-pads, C C, to the lower ends of which are fastened the elastic hose-supporting tapes D D, the ends of the latter being passed through the loops c c, and then fastened or secured to the'adjusting-clasps b b, whereby" the yends d dof the hoseattaehments E E, which are passed through the loops can be drawn up with greater or less force.
The ends d d ofthe attachments E E may be fastened or connected to the tops of the hose by buttons, or in any other desirable manner.
The hip-pads C G are quite important, since they prevent the displacement of the elastic hose-support-y ing tapes D D, either when sitting or walking.-
If the elastics D D extended up to the band A, or Were connected to narrow non-elastic tapes or pieces, there would be great liability of such long, narrow connecting-pieces becoming twisted about the person, especially when sitting down.
By means of the wide hip-pads, the above-named objections are obviated, while, at the same time, all chaiing is avoided, which would result from the use of narrow connecting-pieces.
The supporter part B affords a very convenient support for the skirts.,
An elastic gore-piece may be set into the back of the parts A and B, if preferred, and they may be made to be laced together, if preferred.
My combined skirt and hose-supporter has been tested, and it has given the best of satisfaction.
Having described my combined skirt and hose-supporter, i
What I claim therein as new, and 'of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters -Patent as an v impor-v tant article of manufacture, is-` The skirt-supporter B, to which are attached the hose-supporters D, the latter being provided with hippads C, and the Whole being combined and arranged substantially as set forth.
MARIA J. FOSS.
