Description
Np. 54,287. Patented May 1, 1866.
F/G-I 2.
PATENT Fries.
W. P. BROOKS, OF FAIRMOUNT, MINNESOTA.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 54,287, dated May 1, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLARD P. BROOKS, of Fairmount, Martin county, Minnesota, have invented a new and Improved Bag-Fastener 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side View of the upper part of a bag with my improved fastener loosely attached. Fig. 2 is the same view with the fastener drawn taut.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish a fastener by means of which a grain or other bag may be securely and quickly tied or fastened, and as quickly untied or unfastened when desired; and it consists of a bag-fastener constructed and arranged as hereinafter more fully described.
A is a strong piece ofleather cut out into substantially the form shown in the drawings. This leather A is attached to the bag B by a copper or other rivet, O. A strong knot is formed on one end ofthe stringI), which may be made of leather or other suitable material. This stringis then passed through the hole a. It then passes around the bag and through the hole (1 then through a hole in the tab E, then through the hole a It then passes outside of the loop or part of the string that passes around the bag and through the hole a, an-
other strong knot being also formed on this end of the string.
In fastening a bag to which my improved fastener has been attached the loop at, which is to pass around the bag, is slipped around or over the left hand or wrist. The mouth ofthe bag is then gathered and the loop d allowed to drop from the hand over the mouth of the bag. By .)ulling upon the loop 61 the loop d is drawn tightly around the bag. Then, placing the thumbof the left hand upon the hole a to prevent the string from slipping back through it, draw upon the end at of the string. This draws the loop d down into the position shown in Fig. 2 and the loop 01 down tightly beneath the plate A and against the loop (1. The bag is now tied or fastened.
For greater security the end d of the string D may be passed around the loop 02 beneath the edge of the tab E.
In unfastening the bag all that is necessary is topullstronglyuponthetabE. Thisloosens the fastening and allows the loop 61 to be removed from the bag.
It should be observed that by tying a knot upon the post (I of the string D about two inches (more or less) from the end thereof the said end of the string may be grasped and operated with greater ease in fastening the bag.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent- A11 improved bag'fastener constructed and arranged substantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
The above specification of my invention signed this 17th day of February, 1866.
W. P. BROOKS.
