IMPROVEMENT BAG-TIES.

To all whom it may concern .Be it known that I, L. H. GANO, of New York, in the State of New York, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Bag-Ties; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description,

of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a View in perspective of my invention, when open.

Figure 2 is a similar view of a closed tie.

To enable thoseskilled in the art to make and use my invention, I now proceed to describe its construction and operation.

Similar letters in the drawings refer tolike parts.

This invention relates to a well-known class of devices for tying bags, the type of which is a clasp, usually of metal, permanently secured to the outside of a bag near its mouth, such a clasp often consisting of a chain of two or more links, with a lever at one extremity for drawing the two ends into connection around the bags; and of this description is my'present device, applied to which there are, however, two novel improvements, in

which my invention consists, to wit, a corrugated link at one end of the chain, by meansof which the tie'may belengthened or shortened to fit various sizes of bags,

and a slot at the inner extremity of the lever, at the other end of the chain, for the double purpose of bolding said lever securely when the bag is tied, and assisting its withdrawal from the corrugated link during the latter stage of the process of untying.

In the drawings- A B represent two metallic links, of the kind commonly used in making bag-ties, the same being joined together as seen in the figures.

To the opposite end of the link A is joined one extremity of a corrugated link, 0, which forms the end of the chain.

The manner of connecting the links A and G, admits of slipping the corrugations c of the latter, one after another, into the eyes a of the former.

The corrugations c are of such form, however, that,

when in connection with the eyes of the link A, they cannot be removed by any longitudinal pressure, and,

when the bag is tied, hold it firmly. Hence, the length of the link 0 may be practically altered to suit the sizes of various bags, by adjusting the corrugations c to the eyes a. The necessity of making various sizes of links is thus avoided.

The lever D is of the usual form of bag-tie levers. At its inner extremity it has a projection, E, of chip tical shape, turned inward, as seen in the figures,which projection has a curved slot, 0, Within it, through which slot passes the link B.

The function of the said projection and slot is---- First, to hold the lever securely when the bag is tied, and this it does by reason of the end of the link B slipping to one end of the slot during the fastening of the bag, and the end of the slot 0 at the same time slipping to the opposite end of the recess 01 between the projection E and the lever D, By this means, pressure is brought to bear upon the lever in two dia metrically opposite directions, and consequently the pressure of the link 0, which is the force which tends to draw the lever up and untiethe bag, is resisted by the pressure of the link B upon the projection E.

The function of the projection and slot is-- Second, to aid in untying the bag during the latter stage of the process. When the lever is turned back so far as partially to reverse the projection E, of course the link B slips, under the pressure of the bag, to the opposite end of the slot, and when the lever is entirely reversed, and before it is fully disengaged from the link 0, it may be thrust, in the direction-of the link B, the length of the slot 0, and thus aid in completing the separation-of the lever fi m the said link 0, and. the consequent untying of the bag.
