UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIoE.
ALEXANDER T. HAMILTON, OF ETNA, GEORGIA, AND WILLIAM BELL LoWE, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
BAG- OR SACK FASTENER OR CLOSURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 17, 1907.
Application filed March 19. 1906. Serial No. 306,808.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALEXANDER T. HAMILTON and WILLIAM BELL LOWE, citi Zens of the United States, residing at Etna, county of Polk, and State of Georgia, and at New York, county of New York, and State of New York, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag or Sack Fasteners or Closures; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to fasteners for sacks or bags and has for its object to provide a cheap and simple fastening means which can be easily and conveniently applied to any kind or style of woven bags or sacks.
lVith this object in view our invention consists in the novel construction of the fastoner and also in the construction providing for sealing the bag or sack after applying the fastener.
Referring to the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is an elevation of the upper portion of a bag or sack showing fastener in operative position and sealed. 2 is a plan view of fastener. Fig. 8 is a plan view of fastener partially in fastening position showing bar passed through one of the eyes or loops. Fig. 4 is a plan view of fastener partially in fastening position showing bar passed through both eyes or loops. Fig. 5 is a perspective View of fastener in fastened position and sealed. Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional View through mouth of sack, and Fig. 7 is a slight modification showing fastener made of a single piece of wire.
Like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several figures in which:
1- indicates a bag or sack and 2 the mouth thereof.
3 indicates the fastener which as shown in Fig. 2 comprises the bar or wire 4 normally straight, the ends 4 thereof being turned back upon itself and secured at 5 to form' the eyes or loops 6 and 7.
8 indicates a bar or wire substantially at right angles to the bar or wire 4, said bar or wire 8 being turned or twisted about the bar or wire 4 at 9 which is substantially the central point of said bar or wire 4. The end 10 of the bar 8 is sharpened to a point while the end 11 is blunt.
As shown in Fig. 7 the fastener may be made of a single piece of wire, the loops 6' and 7 being formed as shown.
Having thus fully described the several parts of our invention its operation is as follows: In order to apply the fastener to a bag or sack, the pointed end 10 of the bar or wire 8 is passed transversely through the mouth 2 of the bag or sack 1. When the bar or wire 8 is in this position the bar or wire 4 is bent and the eye or loop 6 is passed on the bar or wire 8 as shown in Fig. 8. The flexible bar or wire 4 is again bent passing the eye or loop 7 thereof on the bar or wire 8 as shown in Fig. 4. These operations bring the neck 2 of the bag or sack 1 into position shown in Fig. 1, effectually closing the bag or sack. The ends 10 and 11 of the flexible bar 8 are then bent upwardly and can be twisted together, or sealed by means of a seal 12 as shown in Figs. 1 and 5.
By this simple device a bag or sack can be effectually closed and sealed which will insure the bag or sack against tampering and protect the original contents.
In Fig. 6 the bar or wire 8 is shown and illustrated as being passed through the sack, through the loops 6 and 7 and passed back through the sack and sealed at 12.
Having thus fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A fastener or closure of the character described comprising a bar or member pro vided with two eyes or loops, said bar or member being arranged to be bent around an object to be fastened or closed, and a bar or member associated with said first mentioned bar or member arranged to be passed through an object to be fastened or closed and to engage the eyes or loops on said first mentioned bar or member, substantially as described.
2. A fastener or closure of the character described comprising a bar or member arobject to be fastened or closed, said projecting bar or member engaging the ends of said encircling member to secure and fasten the same in position, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, we afiix our signatures, in presence of two Witnesses.
ALEXANDER T. HAMILTON. WILLIAM BELL LOWVE. Witnesses:
