SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 380,441, dated April 3, 1888.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK A. HYATT and EWING D. TANKERSLEY, citizens of the United States, residing'in the town of Alamosa, in in the county ofGonejos and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Manacles, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to devices for securing prisoners; and itcousists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, whereby a prisoner may be very effectually and humanely deprived of the free use of his arms.
The drawing shows a perspective view of the device, the dotted lines indicating the body of the prisoner, to which the device is applied.
A leather belt, 1, encircles the Waist of the prisoner, and is provided with loops 3 of the same material, through which a chain, 2, is passed, and has its ends secured together hehind the back of the prisoner. The leather belt or band 1 is not fastened to the prisoner except by the waist-chain, which is the actual securing device. The leather belt is interposed between the waist-chain and the body of the prisoner, to distribute the pressure of the chain and prevent it from galling him. A neckchain, 4, has its front end permanently secured to the said waistchain in front of the prisoner, and the rear end of the said neckchain is connected to the back of the waistchain by any suitable locking device, such as the padlock 9, which engages with the link 5 at the end of the neck-chain. The middle portion of the neck-chain is double and forms the loop 6, which encircles the neck of the prisoner, being large enough to be slipped over his head. A snap-link, 7, or other similar catch, is used for taking up the slack of the loop 6 behind the prisoner after the loop has been slipped over his head. This snaplink may he slipped through any of the links of the loop and DlIJCiSiZhQlll together. The device is attached to the prisoner as indicated in the drawing, hiswrists being sccured by the handcuffs. The hands and arms are thus left in a natural position. They cannot he brought nearer together, nor can the waist-belt he slipped up or down to any material extent without the locking device and the snap-link being first undone.
\Vhat we claim is 1. In a manacle, the combination of the waist-chain, the single handcuffs secured to the sides of the waist-chain, the neck-chain provided with a neck-loop and having one end permanently secured to the front of the waistchain, and a removable locking device connecting the other end of the neck-chain with the back of the waist-chain.
2. In a lnanacle, the combination of the waist-chain, the single handcuffs secured to the sides of the waist-chain, the neck-chain provided with a neck-loop and having one end permanently secured to the front of the waistchain, an adjustable link for taking up the slack of the said neck-loop, and a removable locking device connecting the other end of the neck-chainto the back of the waist-chain.
3. In a manacle, the combination of the leather waist-belt provided with loops 3, the
.chain 2, passing through the said loops and having its ends secured together, the single handcuffs 10, attached to the sides of the said waist-chain, the neck-chain 4, provided with the neck-loop 6, the snap-link 7,for taking up the slack of the neck-loop, and the padlock 9, connecting the end of the neck-chain to the back of the waist-chain.
