PATENT STEPHEN C. BUBLINGAME, OF STERLING, CQNNECTICUT.
BUNDLE-TYING DEVICE.
Application filed January 8, 1914.
To alZ whom may GO1ZC6TH.
Be it known that 1, STEPHEN G. BURLIN- GAME, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sterling, in the county of Windham and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bundle-'lying Devices, of which the following is a specincation, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to bundle tying devices and has for its object the production of a simple efiicient sheet-metal clasp over which the several strands of a tie is adapted to be passed and secured thereto for the purpose of efficiently holding the cord or tie in such a manner as to allow the tie or cord to be easily and quickly released.
t, ther objects and advantages of the presen device will appear throughout the following specification and claim.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a top plan view of the tie showing the same in the first position assumed by the tie when the cord is attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the tie showing a string or cord secured to the clasp, the clasp being shown in its final or locked position. 3 is a detail perspective of the clasp. a is a detail perspective of the clasp looking at the opposite side from that illustrated in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a plan View of the blank from which the clasp is formed. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section through the fastener.
By referring to the drawing, it will be seen that 1 designates the body portion of the clasp which is provided with a pair of oppositely-extending lips 2, which lips have their outer ends slightly outwardly curved to facilitate the entrance of a cord between the lip and the body portion 1. The fastener is formed of a blank sheet of material and when folded will assume a substantially Z-shaped structure. Each of the lips 2 is provided with an overl anging or outwardly-folded tongue 3, which tongue has its outer end slightly turned upwardly so as to facilitate the entrance of a string or cord under thetongue. The tongues 3 are carried by each lip 2 near the folded portion of the lip, or, in other words, near the junction of the lip and the body portion of the fastener. W hen the fastener is in a folded position, it will be seen that one tongue Will be carried upon both the top and bottom of the fastener.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 19115.
Serial No. 811,048.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that, owing to the construction of the device, the fastener may be formed of a minimum amount of material and may also be stamped in one operation of a machine.
in actual operation, the fastener may be grasped between the thumb and fore-finger to facilitate the placing of the end of a cord f under the tongue 3 upon the top of the fastener as shown at 6. The cord is then placed under the top lip 2 as indicated at '7 and the fastener is then placed upon the article desired to be wrapped, having the cord extending away from the hand as shown at S in Fig. 1. The cord is then wound around the package 5 to be wrapped to the position shown in Fig. 1. The portion of the cord as indicated at 9 in Fig. 2 is then continued around at right-angles to the cord illustrated in Fig. 1 at 8 until the cord assumes the position shown in Fig. 2, whereupon the fastener is turned over toward the right and the free end 10 of the cord is then passed under the upper lip, which previously was the lower lip and the free end 10 of the cord is then placed under the free tongue 3 illustrated in Fig. 2, which previously was the lower lip 3, thereby firmly holding the cord in a set position upon the package. It will be understood that the fastener is turned over in the position shown in Fig. 2 relative to the position of the fastener in Fig. 1, thereby showing the reverse side or what was previously the under-side of the fastener illustrated in Fig. 1.
What is claimed is:
A package tie comprising a fastener formed from a blank sheet of material hav ing a body portion terminating at 'ts opposite ends in backwardly-bent, oppositely-extending, outwardly-curved lips, each lip provided with a backwardly-folded tongue-portion extending from the side edge of said lip adjacent the junction of the lip with the body portion of the fastener and adapted to receive a cord for holding the same in a set position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
