CLOTHES-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4L, 1919.
Application filed June 8, 1918. Serial No. 238,897.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT J. SULLIVAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sheldon, in the county of OBrien and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Fasteners; and y I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in clothes fasteners especially adapted for attaching clothes to clothes lines.
An important object of this invention is to provide a clothes line fastener adapted to be permanently arranged on a clothes line, and so constructed so as not to interfere with the winding of the line on a reel.
A further object of the invention is to provide a clothes fastener adapted to be slidably arranged on a clothes line and having longitudinally extending serrated arms adapted to engage garments to support the same on the line.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which is constructed from a single blank of metal, thus permitting the device to be manufactured in large quantities and with but little cost.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described, which is neat in appearance and reliable and efficient in use.
A further object of the invention is to rovide a device of the character descri ed, which by virtue of its extreme simplicity and cheapness of manufacture will successfully compete with numerous other devices in a highly crowded art.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure l is a side elevation of my improved clothes fastener, showing the same arranged on a clothes line,
Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal vertical view through the same,
F 3 is a bottom plan view of the device,
Flg. 4 is a vertical transverse section, taken on the line 4.4 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section, taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 generically designates the fastener, which in manufacture may be stamped from a single blank of metal. In cross section the device is substantially U-shaped and is provided with transverse incisions along its upper portion, thus providing a partly severed portion 11. As clearly shown in Fig. 2, the centrally disposed portion 11 is bent downwardly, thus forming a channel for the reception of a clothes line 12. Arms 13 diverge outwardly from the central portion 11 and are provided with side walls 14, having their lower edges serrated, as at 15. Disposed between the arms 13 and outwardly of the channel 11 are side walls 16.
In applyin my improved clothes fastener to a clothes line, it is obvious that the line is passed under the arms 13 and over the channel. In fastening clothes to the line by the device, the same are passed under the side walls 14 of the arms 13 and engaged by the serrated edges thereof. By virtue of the device being provided with a slight longitudinal curve, the grip exerted by the arms of the device will be in proportion to the weight of the article suspended from the line. It will be further apparent that the longitudinal curve of the device permits of the line being wound upon a reel.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A clothes line fastener comprising, a body portion, said body portion being substantially U-shaped in cross section and having a pair of spaced transversely extending incisions across its upper surface, thus forming In testimony whereof I aifix my signature a partly severed portion adapted to be bent in presence of two Witnesses. downwardly to form a channel; and arms ROBERT J SULLIVAN extending from the body portion, said arms having their lower edges serrated, said body Witnesses: portion and arms being curved longitudi- E. W. Sienna, nally for the purpose described. M. E. CLAGG.
