SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Fatent No. 566,424, dated August 25, 1896.
Application filed March 14, 1896.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEONARD 0. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Holding Devices or Packages for Skein-Silks or other Threads, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to an improved device for holding embroidery-silks or other threads; and it consists in the novel construction of the same hereinafter set forth and described.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and efiective device for holding links or skeins of thread, which will protect the contents from becoming snarled or tangled, and which will permit the same to be neatly packed and readily exhibited or examined, and which, when utilized, will allow the ready removal of one or more threads of the skein without disarranging the remaining contents.
My invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a skein of thread and a blank from which'the package is made, illustrating the first stage of construction. Fig. 2 is an end view of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. lis a side elevation of the skein and envelop in its partiallycompleted form. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of my completed invention carrying a skein of thread. Fig. 7 is a cross-section on line m 00, Fig. 5.
A is a skein of thread.
B is a blank of substantially rectangular outline and of a length by preference substantially equal to the inside length of the skein A. b b are flaps or wings extending laterally from and comprising a part of said blank B. In assembling or forming the package the blank B is first inserted into the link of the skein A, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. The flaps h b are next doubled over, as indicated, Figs. 4 and 5, thus enveloping one side or substantially one-half of the entire length of the skein. If desirable, one or both of the flaps b b may be gummed to cause them to be securely held together or against the adjacent portion of the envelop when folded. The envelop thus formed is next doubled upon itself, as indicated in Fig. 6, and the Serial No. 583,26 8. (No model.)
two adjacent faces of the same held together, by preference by the use of a suitable adhesive substance, thus forming the completed skein-holding device or package. In the completed form the ends of the skein project from only one end of the package and are exposed sufficiently to permit the examination of the same to determine the color, quality, 850. When it is desired to extract the silk from said package, the skein is severed at a point outside the holder, thus dividing the thread into separate lengths, each equal to the entire length of the original skein.
In operation it is merely necessary to grasp one or more of the threads which project from the package, and by exercising a gentle pull the same may be extracted without disturbing the remaining contents, for the reason that doubling the envelop upon itself to form the completed package causes the inner side of the package at the bend to press toward the adjacent inner surface of the opposite side, thus frictionally engaging that portion of the skein of thread located between said surfaces in the closed end of the package and thus preventing accidental disengagement of the skein from the holder.
It is obvious that any reasonable change in the length, breadth, thickness, or outline of the package may be permitted without departing from the spirit of my invention, and it is also clear that instead of using a gummy substance to secure the flaps and to hold the package in its doubled form, as illustrated,
ordinary elastic bands may be substituted, or any other well-known means may be resorted to in accomplishing said end.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A skein-holding device or thread-package comprising a ring of thread, one side of said ring being inclosed in a substantially rectangular blank folded laterally to form an envelop open at both ends, said envelop being doubled upon itself longitudinally and secured in said position forming the completed article open at only one end, substantially as described.
