Description

(ModeL) A. 0. HAFELY. Package for Pen0i1s..
Patented Aug. 3,1880.
ALFRED O. HAFELY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO KOCH, SONS & O0.
PATENT OFFIQE.
OF SAME PLACE.
PACKAGE FOR PENCILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,772, dated August 3, 1880.
Application filed June 10, 1880. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED G. HAFELY, of the city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Packages tor Penoils, of-which the following is a specification.
Pencils have been put up in bundles or packages, generally of one dozen each, but in almost all instances it is necessary to count them, and the paper wrapper that holds them together has to be wound around the pencils, and sometimes a strip of paper is wound between the pencils, and passed around the bundle, and united by adhesive material.
This invention relates to a wrapper for holding the pencils when in the package adapted to being sold, and also for allowing the removal from or a reinsertion of the pencil into the package when in use.
I make use of tubular holders attached to a strip of paper, forming a wrapper, such holders being placed so that the pencils lie transversely to the wrapper in two groups, and said wrappermay be closed, and the pencils brought together in a compact bundle, and secured by a cord passing around the wrapper.
By this means the tubular pencil-holders determine the number of pencils put up in the package. and render it unnecessary to count them. The pencils can be removed from the holder or replaced, and the package can be opened or closed, as the convenience of the party using the same may render necessary.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents the package as open ready for the reception of the pencils. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same; and Fig. 3 shows the package of pencils endwise of such pencils.
The strip a, of paper, muslin, or similar material, is of a size adapted to surround the package of pencils. Upon the inner surface the pencil-holding tubes b b are fastened. These tubes are either separate paper tubes or else they are formed of a strip that is fluted and fastened to the strip a. These tubes are arranged in two sections, as shown, so that the 4 5 section A will fold over upon the section B after the pencils have been put into place, and thus make a compact package.
The cord 6 is preferably fastened through an eyelet, P, in the Wrapper a, so that the pack- 10 age can be securely fastened or opened at pleasure by tying or untying the cord, as at is, Fig. 3.
This improvement allows the package to be opened for the inspection of the pencils by the purchaser, if desired, and the package may be left open or hung up for exhibiting the pencils.
1 claim as my invention- The package for pencils, formed of a strip of material, a, adapted to be wrapped around the package of pencils, and two separate rows of transverse tubular pencil-holders secured in line with each other to one side of the said wrapper, so that the pencil-holders come into contact With each other when the package is rolled up, substantially as specified.
Signed by me this 8th day of June, A. D. 1880.
ALFRED G. HAFELY.
